This thesis entitled Prisons Inmates' Experiences in the Gorgona Penal Colony, Italy: Towards a Theory of Communicative Support is hereby accepted by the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies, U.P. Open University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor in Communication (DCOMM).

Flor, professor and dean of the UPOU Faculty of Information and Communication Sciences, for trusting me from the very beginning. Carlo Alberto Mazzerbo, director of Gorgona Prison, for his availability, courtesy and enthusiasm for this research. In addition, I would like to thank all members of the penitentiary police who assisted me on the island, transported me in their patrol boats and constantly encouraged me with moral support.

In June 2021, she married Dr. Davide Dall'Agata, an Italian national who previously graduated from the Doctor of Communication program at the University of the Philippines Open University. The study investigated how prisoners in the Gorgona penal colony engaged in communication for social support from their perspective and context.

INTRODUCTION

1 According to the Council of Europe report (2021), the countries with the highest rates of incarceration are Turkey (357 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants) and Russia (356), while Italy ranks seventh with around 98 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants . One of the most valuable cases is in Tuscany: the old penal colony located in the island of Gorgona. This is the specificity of the Gorgona Confinement House, an agricultural penal colony that is completely self-sufficient.

Although most of the diseases have been contracted before incarceration, the prison becomes a high-risk transmission site. Many prisons encourage religious worship programs because they are believed to be beneficial to inmates' morale. In the second part, the legislator confirms that the punishments must have the purpose of re-educating the offender.

A crucial feature of the Grounded Theory method is the simultaneous generation and analysis of data. A Grounded Theory has been proposed, all of which are consistent with the development of scientific epistemologies at the time in which they emerged. Each version is a development and extension of the traditional grounded theory of Glaser and Strauss.

I wanted the voice of the prisoners living in the Gorgona Agricultural Penal Colony to be heard.

METHODOLOGY

Vocational and Employment Programs

From a collaboration between the famous Tuscan winemakers Frescobaldi and the Gorgona penal colony, the unique wine is produced by the island's inmates. Frontline Gorgona aims to be a "limited edition" newsletter that communicates a different aspect of the island, with each volume telling the story of a different aspect of this unique place. Now in ruins, it once guarded part of the Mediterranean Sea towards Corsica and protected the monks from frequent pirate attacks.

On the opposite side of the island, facing the Italian mainland, is Cala dello Scalo, a fishing port dominated by the New Tower (Torre Nuova), a fort built by the Medici in the 17th century to complete the island's defensive perimeter. This project of the organic farm Santissima Annunziata by Beatrice Massaza has two main objectives linked to agricultural productivity and to the educational needs of prisons. VERSO, the second phase of the project, sees inmates involved in exporting this model first to other institutions (including through video courses they run) and then to other companies.

RECTO VERSO is a social agricultural project: prisoners made possible the recovery of the island's olive trees, the reactivation of an oil mill and the dream of selling an excellent product outside the narrow confines of the prison. RECTO VERSO includes 85 men, engaged in pruning the olive tree, pressing within hours of harvesting, filtering and bottling in the absence of air and light. Genuine Way is the certification body that deals with blockchain verification that provides product information; guarantees full traceability, ease of recycling or vacuum disposal; and offers the consumer a transparent price.

Participants will be able to go from the sourest to the fruitiest flavors, and be informed about the taste of the buyers, whether they are German, French or American. In September 2021, as happened other times in the past, a Sea Rescue Dog Training Course was carried out by the volunteers of the Sogit Group of Milan, the Relief Work of the Order of St. Ulysses of Colors of the Mind" is the theatrical performance winner of the "NCT 2020 Catarsi - Theaters of Diversity".

The Gorgon Prisoners/Actors Awards ceremony took place recently in Rome (November 2021). Ulysses or the colors of the mind" has many references to the Homeric poem, but it tells of another Odyssey, of a contemporary man of today's world. Theater activities aim to provide prisoners with an experience based on social communication through stage languages.

Educational Programs

Tra di noi ci accettiamo e capiamo bene perché le nostre esperienze sono simili se non uguali." [The experience of Gorgona unites us. I feel like a successful person in the sense that I put a lot of effort into the program's activities. The interviewees views the Gorgona penal colony as a safe space for the inmates to communicate about and make sense of life's difficulties.

Developing a sense of trust can be the means to developing a childhood bond. In Figure 11 I present my model of communication support, based on the experiences of the prisoners in the penal colony of Gorgona in Italy. Based on the prisoners' stories, communicative support is manifested through four concepts, namely: 1) communicating responsibility and protection;

Therefore, it is a way for the inmates of the agricultural penal colony to provide support to each other. All these concepts yielded evident communicative support according to the experiences of the prisoners in the penal colony of Gorgona. Inspired by the experiences of inmates of the Gorgon penal colony, this theory used penal prisons as a casual setting to investigate the concepts of communicative support (Figure 12).

These vocational and employment programs include the Firefighter course, the Work at Height course, the Occupational Safety course, the social project "Frescobaldi for Gorgona", the RECTO VERSO project, the sea rescue dog training course and the Theater course. From the prisoners' perspective, I derived four main concepts of communicative support, including 1) communication of accountability and protection;. Narratives of prisoners show that communication support between prisoners and prison staff has three concepts, including 1) communication of accountability and protection;.

In the Gorgona penal colony, all four forms of communicative support play important roles in the self-development (transformation) and rehabilitation of the prisoners. Inspired by the experiences of the prisoners at the Gorgona penal colony, this theory used a penal prison as a casual setting to investigate the elements of communicative support. Prisoners of the Gorgona Penal Colony have the opportunity to communicate about relevant issues that may affect their daily life in the prison community.

This study tells the story of the Gorgona penal colony from the perspective of prisoners. We will walk through it together”: The importance of peer support for the success of formerly incarcerated women.
