Abstract:
One of the main problems that agronomists face is that the experimental data they collected during their career disappear or are no longer accessible. This is both a financial as well as a personal loss for all parties involved. With the rapid improvement in information technology, these experimental data sets could be made available to others through electronic media. One of the basic needs of simulation model developers and users are experimental data for evaluation of a model for local conditions and crop management practices. The International Consortium for Agricultural Systems Applications (ICASA) has therefore developed the ICASA Data Exchange (IDE) where experimental data can placed for sharing between crop modelers and experimentalists. The IDE has been implemented at
www.ICASA.net and basic information for each data set is stored in the Meta data, which can be searched by crop, country or coordinates. ICASA members can download these data sets or provide new data for sharing with others. Each data set can include management information such a crop and cultivar, planting date, plant spacing, irrigation and fertilizer applications, as well as observed data for crop development, yield and yield components, and growth analysis. We hope that the IDE will lead to the exchange of quality data sets for evaluation and application of models to help solve real-world problems.
