Abstract:

The measurement of the spatial soil water content distribution is very important for the determination of water flow, especially if preferential flow occurs. Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) has been introduced in soil physics as a non - or minimal invasive measurement tool during the recent years. Most

application using GPR in soil physics were done with spatial resolution in the range of meters. But the pattern of water repellent areas for example has a typical range of decimetres. In this contribution measurements with a spatial resolution of about 10 cm are presented. Radar antennas of 1 GHz and 800 MHz were used. The measurements were carried out on bare soil, grassland and a Lysimeters. Water content distribution was measured at transects as well as on areas of a few square meters. Ground wave and reflected waves from the GPR were analysed. It could be shown, that the water content distribution could be detected in the necessary spatial resolution. Also the temporal dynamics of the water content changes are presented. It was possible to detect water repellent areas. At least tomographic

measurements on a lysimeter are presented. The aim of the contribution is to show the possibilities of GPR for small-scale measurements on different sites.
