Marrakesh has many names—The Red City, Pearl of the South, and The Heartbeat of Morocco. This dynamic city in central Morocco charms visitors with its beautiful palaces, ancient winding streets, colorful goods, and lively city square.

One of the city’s greatest attractions is the medina—its walled ancient quarter—within which lies a maze of small, winding streets.

This district dates back to the founding of the city in the 11th century.

Marrakesh’s earliest rulers built walls around the medina as well as Muslim temples within it. Most of those were destroyed by attackers in 1147, but the city flourished again from the 17th through the 19th centuries, when many new architectural wonders were constructed.

Today, these monuments give visitors a feel for the history and culture of the city. But the medina is not a museum. It is an energetic place, full of people day and night. This district still houses the city’s traditional market, the largest one in Morocco. The market serves locals and visitors alike, selling spices, carpets, leather bags, and colorful scarves. Here visitors can also purchase traditional pastries and other snacks in alleys where slaves were once bought and sold.

Dog dementia is common especially in dogs over ten years, but it’s often difficult to spot. Dog dementia is similar to Alzheimer ’s disease in humans, a progressive brain disease that comes with behavioral, cognitive and other changes.

Dog dementia is generally seen in dogs over eight years old, but can occur in ones as young as six. Pet owners may dismiss many behavior changes as just a normal part of ageing. Veterinarians can also find it difficult to diagnose because there is no accurate, non-invasive test for it. Just like humans, senior dogs are likely to have a number of other health issues that can complicate diagnosis.

The interactions of dogs with dementia with people and other pets can change as they may seek less or more affection from their owners than before, or start to get angry with the other dog. They may even forget faces they have known all their lives, and can often get lost in their own backyard or home. They also tend to sleep more during the day and be up more at night. They may pace, whine or bark, seemingly without purpose. Comfort does not often soothe them, and even if the behavior is interrupted, it usually resumes quite quickly.

For dogs over ten years old, every extra year of life increases the risk of developing dementia by more than 50%. Less-active dogs are almost 6.5 times more likely to have dementia than dogs that are very active. While this might suggest regular exercise could protect dogs against dementia, dogs with dementia, or with early signs of dementia, may be less likely to exercise. However, we do know exercises can reduce the risk of dementia in people. So walking our dogs may help them and us reduce the risk of dementia.
