Between 1870 and 1900, nearly 12 million immigrants came to the United States. The majority came from Germany, Ireland, and, England. 31 At first, they were attracted to North America by the gold rush in California and many looked for gold on their own or worked for other miners. After the gold rush, some Chinese immigrants worked as agricultural laborers, with railroad construction crews throughout the West, and at low-paying industrial jobs. 32

Later, with the beginning of difficult economic times in the 1870s, other immigrants and European Americans began to compete for jobs originally reserved for the Chinese. 33 Many European Americans called for the Chinese immigrants to be kicked out of the United States. The result was the Chinese Exclusion Act, passed by Congress in 1882. This piece of legislation prevented any more Chinese immigration to the United States for almost the next 100 years.

One's teenage years are difficult because teenagers have so much pressure from school, their parents, and changes in their bodies. As a result, it is necessary for teenagers to learn how pressure affects them and how they can deal with it.

Under pressure, the body reacts in many ways. Both heartbeat and breathing become faster, which sometimes leads to headaches and high blood pressure. Muscles become tight and even painful. Teenagers under pressure may be more sensitive to noise and to their surroundings and feel angry or sad easily. It may be hard to get enough sleep, and teenagers may feel tired even after they sleep for a long time. Pressure may keep teenagers from focusing, and make them forget things easily. These problems often make teenagers feel unhappy and think that life is miserable.

(8)

There are helpful ways for teenagers to get away from pressure. Firstly, playing sports does them good because healthy bodies make for healthy minds. Secondly, eating healthy foods and getting enough rest can help them relax. Thirdly, happy thoughts allow them to look on the bright side of life. Finally, talk to a friend or a trusted adult. Troubled teenagers should remember that they're never alone-there's always someone to talk to. Keeping bad feelings inside can cause health problems and can even lead unhappy teens to kill themselves.

Without a doubt, pressure is a part of life for teenagers. By finding ways to rise above pressure, they can go through their hard times with hope and happiness.

Hydroponics is the science of growing plants without soil, in liquid solutions. Why would we want to grow things without soil? Well, it is usually because there isn't any!

For example, one American airline used hydroponics techniques in the 1930s to grow vegetables on a rocky island that had no soil. Airplanes flying from the USA to Guam and back again had to stop on the island, and the passengers had to be kept supplied with fresh vegetables.

Space is another area where hydroponics could be useful. NASA has shown great interest in this field of research. Of course, growing plants in a conventional way is very difficult on a spacecraft, and would be even more difficult on another planet! NASA hopes that one day hydroponics will allow astronauts to grow their own food while they are in space and perhaps even establish colonies on the moon or Mars.

It's not just in space or remote islands that hydroponics can be useful, however. One American company is using hydroponics techniques to build rooftop gardens on large buildings inside major cities. This could help tackle the problem of global food shortages. What's more, because the food does not have to be transported over long distances, it is cheaper and fresher!

As the examples above indicate, hydroponics is a fascinating branch of scientific research that may bring us many benefits in the future.

Girl-empowering books could give inspirations to girls and encourage them to dream big.

With the willingness to fall and get back up, girls will be on their way to making their dreams come true. The following is information about two strong women, who write down their personal stories that are full of fascinating insights.

In the book, Maye Musk first narrates her marriage to a husband who verbally and physically abused her. With bruises all over her body, she was constantly beaten up by her husband even in public. When she was finally allowed to divorce, he threatened her by chasing her with a kitchen knife in hand.

Maye steeled herself and ended up moving out with her children.

Maye has moved several times in her entire life, even in her fifties. Moving means to start over again, get new licenses as a dietitian, and make new friends. She manifests her persistence by continuing to model regardless of age. At the age of 71, she became the CoverGirl model and reached the highlight of her career.

In her book, she gives sound advice such as “Get out of a bad situation; if nothing is changing and you are unhappy, you change.”

Her figure hasn’t always been perfect, and stresses and unhappiness are why. The book can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of gender or age.

Stephanie Land used to have a promising life in her twenties with plans to attend college and pursue a writing career. However, her pregnancy has changed everything.

Believing that she ruined his biking trip and his life, her drunk boyfriend turned vicious.

Things went downhill and ended with a call to a domestic violence hotline and a divorce.

There could be a series of “shoulds.” She should have gone to college. She shouldn’t have raised the kid alone. She should have done things differently. The book answers all the shoulds in a calm voice. It’s a shock to see how a smart, talented woman ended up as a homeless mother who relies on public benefits and earns low wages by cleaning houses.

In the book, the sense of isolation as a maid and her struggle of living in poverty can all make the readers feel sympathetic and relate to her difficulty.

Dear Samantha,

I am writing this letter because I don't know any other ways to better express my deep gratitude to you. High school life hasn't been easy for me, but you made it all bearable. I am always a little awkward when it comes to socializing, and I guess that's why I never really had any friends until I met you. You came into my world when you introduced yourself to me on the first day of school. From that day on, we talked about everything from school life to our shared hobbies. I am so blessed with having you in my life. There were many precious moments I will bear in mind forever. If my memory serves me right, one time I was frustrated when I failed math so badly and was thinking about giving up studying. It is you who comforted me, dragged me out of the abyss of depression and offered to tutor me. With your help, I improved so much on the next math exam.

I am really grateful to you for this friendship we have shared together and for all the assistance you have given me. Honestly speaking, I don't think I could survive high school without you. Thank you so much. No matter how far we may drift apart after graduation, I will cherish our friendship from the bottom of my heart.

Love yours, Brianne
