Chapter 5: Discussion and Conclusion
5.6 Conclusions
An organization’s profitability, productivity, and competitiveness depend on its ability to consistently act and create policies to ensure employees' best possible working conditions. Such actions include the development of OHS policies that minimize risk and maximize employees’
ability to be on the job and in full health (European Commission, 2007;
Armstrong, 2009). The findings suggest that OHS must be strategically developed from within by increasing how employees actively engage in OHS, including training and policy building. Meanwhile, the findings suggest that emphasis should be placed on the ways leadership prioritizes OHS and makes it a focus within the workplace.
Overall, this study provides theoretical support for a more aggressive approach to OHS, as well as the need to develop a strategy for improving health and safety. It begins with developing a clear set of policies and procedures for employees to follow, followed by education and increased awareness of employees. Further research is needed to replicate the findings in other settings or across various businesses to develop a clearer set of recommendations.
