Course Outline (Course syllabus)

Course Name : Orthodontics Course Course Number: 522 PDS

Course Level : The course is offered in the two semester of the fifth year Year : 2008-2009 / 1429-1430

Course Director: Dr. Fadia Al-Hummayani

Course Description:

This orthodontic course is designed in the curriculum so as to follow the guidelines for predoctoral orthodontics developed by the American Association of Dental Schools. The course is given over a period of 13 weeks per semester (26 weeks overall). The students will have lectures and practical laboratory projects. Most of the laboratory projects are requested to relate to the lecture chosen.

This course is intended to give the student an introduction of orthodontic diagnosis, evaluation and treatment planning with the emphasis on the in elements of orthodontics which the general practitioner should be familiar with in order to treat limited orthodontic cases. The student will learn orthodontic triage: separating patients who can be treated by a general practitioner and those who will require referral to a dental specialist.

Orthodontic problems of a dental nature and skeletal are covered as well as the surgical Orthognathic surgery. Different orthodontic treatments are presented in general. Simple orthodontic procedures which the general practitioner can perform to control disease and restore function as part general dental work are discussed and implemented as part of the laboratory requirement.

2 Course Objectives:

This course is directed towards achieving specific educational goals. The student should be able to:

1. Understand the problem-oriented approach to diagnosis and treatment planning K2 = Know how to evaluate the major sources: (1) patient questioning, (2) clinical examination of the patient and (3) Diagnostic records, including dental casts, radiographs, and photographs.

2. Be able to differentiate between limited and isolated problems that might be effectively treated as part of a general practice from those requiring complex or comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

3. Should have the basic understanding of fixed appliance mechanics. That includes the use of different brackets systems bands and Intraoral use of elastics.

4. Be able to identify all types dental malocclusion that will require interceptive orthodontic therapy, thus the students should have basic information about interceptive orthodontic treatment to help reduce severity of many complex orthodontic problems.

5. Should have full understanding about removable appliances and the difference between a simple removable appliance and a functional appliance.

6. Be able to design and construct a removable appliance to treat simple malocclusions usually performed by general dentists.

7. Be able to identify a skeletal discrepancy malocclusion that will require growth modification therapy, thus the students should have basic information about Headgear, facemask and functional appliances.

7. Should have an understanding of combined surgical and orthodontic therapy and should be able to explain to patients the procedures and their sequencing with orthodontic treatment. That should include timing, preoperative orthodontics, surgical procedures, and postoperative orthodontics and anticipated results.

8. List reasons for molar up-righting and be able to know how to perform the molar up-righting techniques.
