Catalog Description:

This course is a Basic/Low Intermediate level of the series NorthStar, an innovative five-level, integrated skills series for learners of English as a Second or Foreign Language. It introduces the students to new structures in a variety of contexts. It also provides the students with stimulating topics for the readings that are varied in tone and up-to-date.

Course Objective:

Upon completion of the course, the students will understand both form and content of the language at the lower intermediate level. They will be able to identify grammatically correct structures in natural contexts. Also, they will be able to recognize both form and meaning of new structures that are provided in numerous and varied exercises. In addition, the students will acquire the linguistic competence to explore sophisticated themes and reinforce vocabulary.

Book Description:

The reading book includes reading strategies, predicting activities for recognizing the general context and main ideas for a reading and activities that help the students recognize supporting details. Grammar includes descriptive and possessive adjectives, simple past tense, present progressive, Wh- questions, verbs plus gerunds and infinitives, adverbs and expressions of

frequency, count and non-count nouns, can and could, should and shouldn't, and expressing future plans with be going to and present progressive.

- Students found cheating, in any form, will have their exam cancelled and they will be referred to university authorities. If employed, they may be reported to their employers.
