Lecture No. 2 Introduction

to Working Drawings

Overview of Construction Documents.

According to AIA. working drawings established as Con.Doc is a production methodology developed to improve the quality and usefulness of construction documents while greatly simplifying the process of creating them. Con.Doc provides a means to organize and format drawings and to directly link information shown on drawings to that contained in the specifications.

A major feature of Con.Doc is the use of a unique keynote system that links

drawings and specifications while reducing substantially the text needed on

drawings without any loss of information shown on the drawings.

Basic guideline of the Working drawings Methodology

1. Will not restrict the creativity or individuality of the user.

2. Works with projects of any size or type.

3. Does not restrict the extent of information to be placed in the documents.

4. Works for all disciplines, but it is not necessary that it be used by all disciplines on a project.

5. Provides conventions for formatting the composition of individual drawings, based upon a modular sheet arrangement.

6. Uses a keynote system which directly interfaces with the specification numbering system.

7. Provides a means for standardizing procedures in the preparation of construction documents.

8. Enhances quality control, coordination, and review of documents.

The Drawing Board Format

Consistency of drawing arrangement is achieved through the use of a modular subdivision of spaces with provisions for a keynote system and legend. The ConDoc modular drawing format relates to standard sheet sizes, although special sizes may be accommodated.

The use of ConDoc organizes and standardizes the

arrangement of graphic information within modules (or

group of modules). It establishes a standard size and

location on for titles and symbols, a standard for

placement of information including dimensioning, and

simplifies the means to incorporate standard details and

schedules.
