COURSE INFORMATION:

- Course name and number: Foundation of Professional Nursing (I) NUR(222).

- Course Description:

This course enables the students to expand their knowledge and understanding of the components of the nursing process as a basic of nursing practice. Clinical knowledge, nursing skills and procedure based on the physiological, psychological, cultural and developmental needs of human beings are emphasized.

Health assessment is introduced to allow students to develop skills in identifying an individual's health state, health patterns as well as deviations from the normal. Students practice nursing procedures and skills in a supervised nursing laboratory.

- Teaching Methodology:

o Lecture/ Discussion.

o Demonstration.

o Pre and Post Conferences.

o Audi-Visual Material.

o Selected Clinical Experiences.

- Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the ability to think logically in using the basic components of the nursing process.

2. Obtain a health history of an individual using interviewing techniques and principles of communication.

3. Perform a physical assessment of an individual using technique of inspection, auscultation, palpation, and percussion.

5. Perform a health assessment on an individual including physiologic and psychosocial aspects.

6. Formulate a basic nursing care plan based on an evaluation of health assessment findings and nursing diagnoses.

7. Select appropriate theories and scientific principles from a review of knowledge in required courses in explaining rationale for implementing aspects of a basic nursing care plan.

- Course requirements: Attendance of all Foundations schedule weekly sessions of theory and skill lab.

Foundations of professional nursing (I), contains (5) credit hours in 1st semester.

It is divided into (2) credit hours theory per week and (3) credit hour clinical lab.

- Lab. Location: (5 ) Labs in building (8) at first floor( Numbers:1/831, 1/832, 1/833, 1/845, 1/886).

(3) Hours in 1st Semester (Foundations (I)).

- Safety Precautions and Instruction: perform procedures accurately and safely through following check list guide of each procedure had been taken.

3. Student's performance in the foundations (I) through simulation of procedure at the designated clinical Labs. Lab procedures are properly selected to be taught by demonstration, re-demonstration, audio-visual aids, and models (simulation dolls).

Expectations from students:

1. Punctuality, Punctuality, Punctuality! If you are late, you still have the opportunity to attend the lecture; quietly, use the back door to avoid any noise or interruption to your classmate and your instructor.

2. You are highly advised to discuss the recurrent lateness with your instructor/advisor to avoid absenteeism consequences.

3. Texting is not allowed during the lecture, your instructor reserve the right to take your device if you insist do so. In case of emergency, you can step out quietly.

4. All students expected to exhibit behaviors of adequate preparation of contents in theory and labs with full participation.

- Students Responsibilities to the course:

1. The student performs through course team, consulting and clarifying with the instructors as needed.

2. Pass the written and lab exam.

3. Conduct assignment as required.

- Expectations for each assignment and project:

o Read information from different up- to -date materials through textbook and reliable web sites.

o Use audio-visual materials.

o Be careful when you prepare your assignment and avoid plagiarism.

o All papers should be submitted on time; presented /written (typed) in complete, clear, concise and organized manner. Hand written papers will not be graded.

o A penalty of up to 10% per day will be assessed for papers not submitted on the due date (unless discussed earlier with your instructor).

- Lab roles, plan, and assignments:

o All students are expected to wear a professional uniform during labs and clinical rotation and bring all needed tools (stethoscope, notebook, pen/pencil, calculator).

o Drinking and eating is strictly prohibited inside the labs.
