B. Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes
1. Course DescriptionThe aim of this course is to enable students to understand the basis of knowledge of the plant Taxonomy, and we'll show the basic principles, classification, general characters and distribution the different sections in the plant Taxonomy
Describe the function of classification, have a fundamental use of the vocabulary used in plant taxonomy, distinguish between taxonomy and systematics and be able to identify a classification as systematic or taxonomic, describe the reasons for preferring natural classifications over artificial classifications, collect prepare and preserve plant specimens for identification, understand the features of leaves, flowers, fruits and pollen grains used for taxonomic purpose, know how to use the binomial system, and know how to use dichotomous keys to identify families, genera and species.
2. Course Main Objective
Upon attending the course the students should able be:
Define the principles of basic science in the field of botany.
Demonstrate the various trends for classification and characterization of living organisms, particularly those belonging to vascular plants.
Understand the basis of classification of these organisms into different divisions, classes, orders and Families.
Demonstrate the life cycles and diagnostic features of some representatives as well as their pharmaceutical applications referring to their importance in production of valuable components (e.g. drugs, alkaloids, antibiotics, hormones, steroids, vitamins, carragenan, organic acid, toxins, ………etc).
Explain non living cell contents, seeds and germination, full morphological and anatomical description of different plant parts (e.g.
roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits) with special reference to their pharmaceutical importance.
Explain the basic of microscopical and macroscopical characters of different plants as well as their taxonomical features;
Principles of plant systematic and nomenclature, characteristic features of some important families of flowering plants and demonstration of some representatives with reference to their pharmaceutical importance.
Provide an outline of the physiological characters of the cytoplasm,
plant-water relationships, enzymes, plant pigments and photosynthesis,
respiration, metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and nitrogen, secondary
metabolites and growth hormones.
-Students should be able to recall
biological facts, terms, concepts and principles as well as some
biological techniques.
