Silver alginate is an excellent wound dressing particularly in the case of infected wounds. Researchers at the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, invented a wound dressing consisting of an alginate gel containing oxygen-storing droplets. Millions of these droplets store and channel oxygen to the wound which are difficult to heal due to the low oxygen concentration at the wound site (diabetic ulcers and so on). In the future, advanced alginate wound dressings can be suitably tuned by selecting a particular combination of G (guluronic acid) and M (mannuronic acid) for high absorption, efficient wound-healing and antibacterial activity. From the individual studies reported in the literature, CMCh seems to be an excellent candidate material for wound-healing applications in chronic wounds. CMCh is a modification of chitosan formed by attaching carboxymethyl groups to the chitosan backbone. Depending on the location of the carboxymethyl group attachment, CMCh can be referred to as ‘N’ when the carboxymethyl group attaches to the amine, ‘O’ when it attaches to the primary hydroxyl group or NOCC when attached to both [117]. CMCh has the advantage of a greater solubility range than native chitosan. The large number of publications in this area suggests that CMCh will be an important derivative in the management of wounds and burns, and skin tissue engineering.
