Clifford Jones has produced a valuable and comprehensive account of the development of nuclear energy worldwide from Calder Hall to the present. The decay products of uranium-236 include xenon, which therefore accompanies krypton in the gaseous products of a nuclear reactor.

NEUTRON SPEEDS AND NEUTRON ECONOMY

When, as in the case of uranium-235, the neutrons released as a result of fission allow the reaction to continue, the nuclide is said to be fissile and the term chain reaction is used. The idea that neutrons from the fission of uranium-235 could be diverted to the production of plutonium from uranium-238 is obvious and attractive, as it would mean the simultaneous production of electricity and nuclear fuel.

FURTHER COMMENTS

Usually the term "slow neutrons" means that neutrons have lost some, but not all, of their energy when released. Neutrons 'drive' nuclear fission and neutron economics - effective direction of neutrons onto target nuclides by preventing them from being absorbed by surfaces - must be practiced.

Fast neutrons have energies up to about 20 MeV, and if they are slowed down by collisions, they become It is possible that the rate of production of nuclear fuel in such a reactor exceeds the rate of use of the fuel.

2 EARLY* NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

In fact the Tōkai 1 nuclear power plant, the first in Japan, was of the Magnox type [26]. The Garigliano nuclear power plant was of the BWR type and produced electricity at 150 MW [37].

MASTER IN MANAGEMENT

3 COUNTRIES OF THE EU AND

NON-EU EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

THE UK

The Torness nuclear power station in south-east Scotland has two AGRs [6] as does the site at Hartlepool [7]. At nuclear power plants, spent nuclear fuel can be stored under water in the 'spent fuel pool', the size of which can determine the total lifetime of the power plant.

FRANCE

The proximity of the Paluel nuclear power plant to the English Channel is indicated in the table. The Civaux nuclear power plant (next row of the table), which also uses Arabelle steam turbines, experienced water supply problems during the unusually hot summer of 2019 [30].

SPAIN

The supply of heat for it will have to be in addition to the supply to aqua farming. Low quality steam would have to be the means of exporting heat from the power plants to such external users.

It is expected that at the Almaraz nuclear power plant (first row in the table) one reactor will close permanently in 2027 and the other in 2028 [45]. Like Sizewell B in England, the Ascó nuclear power plant (next row) practices dry storage of spent fuel (see illustration in the table). The Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) in Bulgaria originally had six reactors but now operates with only two, both PWRs [64].

It has two nuclear power plants: Dukovany (bottom left) with four VVER-440 reactors and Temelin (bottom right) with two VVER-1000 reactors [66]. The Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant in the northwest of the country has two VVER-1000 reactors [96]. 5] https://nuclear-powerplants.blogspot.com/2011/05/sizewell-b-nuclear-power-plant.html [6] https://www.edfenergy.com/energy/power-stations/torness.

4 THE AMERICAS

USA: LISTING BY STATE

The Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in California (next row in the table) is used for steam lifting of desalinated seawater [9]. Both nuclear power plants in Florida (next row in the table) were shut down when Hurricane Irma approached in 2017 [14]. The nuclear power plant at Braidwood IL (next row in the table) was the first in the United States to use the Russian TVS-Kvadrat fuel assembly [23].

At the Clinton nuclear power plant, the dome of the reactor building (see the illustration in the table) is free-standing and is held only to the lower, cylindrical part of the structure by gravity [31]. The Duane Arnold nuclear power plant in Iowa (next row in the table) is scheduled for decommissioning as mentioned, and it is expected that Iowa will expand its wind power to cover the shortfall [40]. The RVCH on the PWR at the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant in Missouri (next row in the table) was replaced during a refueling outage in 2014 [65].

At the Catawba nuclear power plant in South Carolina (next row of the table), a new material was used for the service water pipe, replacing carbon steel pipe that had been in service at the plant for 30 years [95].

CANADA

Both PWRs and BWRs are in use in the United States as recorded in the table. A calandria (reactor) at the Bruce nuclear power station showing the row of fuel channels in cross-section. Having been in operation since the early 1990s, it is now undergoing refurbishment [126] both in the reactors (e.g. new fuel channels) and in 'non-nuclear' parts (e.g. new steam generators).

This is with a view to operating the plant in the 2050s (see image below).

The Pickering nuclear power plant on the shores of Lake Ontario has six 515 MW CANDU reactors [128]. The Point Lepreau nuclear power plant in New Brunswick near the border with the US state of Maine has a single 705 MW CANDU reactor [130]. It is often pointed out (eg [132]) that Point Lepreau is the only nuclear power plant in 'Atlantic Canada'.

Locations of the STNP Nuclear Power Plant (USA) and the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant (Mexico) on the Gulf Coast. The Embalse Nuclear Power Plant in Argentina has a single CANDU reactor fueled with natural uranium and producing 635 MW of electricity [139]. At the Atucha Nuclear Power Plant, 100 kilometers from Buenos Aires, there are two PHWRs, not CANDU but Siemens [141].

The Angra nuclear power plant near Rio de Janeiro, the only nuclear power plant in Brazil, has two Siemens PHWRs [143].

Those at the Balakovo nuclear power plant in Russia (first row in the table) are called VVER-1000. The Beloyarsk nuclear power plant (next row in the table) has two fast breeder reactors. The RBMK reactors (reaktor bolshoy moshchnosty kanalny [11]) at the Kursk NPP are light water cooled and graphite moderated.

At the Leningrad nuclear power plant (next row of the table) one MW RBMK was in service until December 2018 [13]. Two of the three RBMK reactors at the Smolensk nuclear power plant (next row of the table) are pre-Chernobyl. Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (the largest nuclear power plant in Europe) showing all six reactors.

One of the reactors at the South Ukrainian nuclear power plant (next row of the table) now contains nuclear fuel from two different suppliers, TVEL and Westinghouse [30].

Rajasthan Nuclear Power Plant has one 100 MW CANDU reactor, one 200 MW CANDU reactor and four 220 MW CANDU reactors [4]. In a departure from the predominance of CANDU reactors in India, the Kudankulam nuclear power plant has two 1000 MW VVERs [14], one of which became operational in 2014 and one in 2016. Already in the 1950s, India's "three-stage nuclear power plant" is was proposed [17] and the program is still interesting.

There are two nuclear power plants in Pakistan (formerly West Pakistan), one of which has four pressurized water reactors (PWR) and the other a single pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) [20]. The Karachi nuclear power plant has a single CANDU reactor capable of producing 90 MW of electricity [19]. The project is financed by a loan from Russia and experience at the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant in Russia (see section 5.1) will be used at Rooppur [24].

Possible configuration of the Ningde nuclear power plant with its six reactors (see comments . in the main text). This contrasts with desalination at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in Arizona, discussed earlier. The two additional reactors at the Ningde NPP (next row in the table) will be Hualong I reactors (see Section 6.2).

The ACPR-1000 PWRs used at the Yangjiang Nuclear Power Plant (next row of the table) differ from earlier reactors in the series, mainly in their improved containment capability [31]. One of the 559 MW units at the Ikata nuclear power plant (next row of the table) will leave service in the near future [38]. At the Takahama nuclear power plant (next row of the table), the vessel strengthening work is with a view to 40 years of further operation [45].

The prototype CAREM-25 (Central Argentina de Elementos Modulares) PWR actually produced 27 MW. In the discussion of the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant in Russia (section 5.1) it was noted that liquid sodium is a poor neutron absorber, making its use advantageous. A value of 550oC is given in section 5.1 for the sodium coolant temperature in a nuclear reactor.

This includes the U battery which like some of the other reactors in this chapter has helium as a heat exchange fluid. TRISO fuel is to some extent a generic term and there is room for variation in the exact composition of the nuclear fuel. There is a further point to consider which will be made using the diagram below which is quite basic and has been widely reproduced (eg [23]).

The binding energy per nucleon of the nucleons in the equation above is as follows: deuterium 1.115 MeV, helium-4 7.073 MeV, and tritium 2.827 MeV.
