MRS. M. SEGAL RETURNS FROM ZURICH

Bnoth Zion Association Extend Welcome

A warm welcome was accorded Mrs. Mary Segal on her return from Zurich, by the Bnoth Zion Associa- tion, at an "At Home" held at the Zionist Hall on Thursday, the 16th inst. Mrs. Segal was one of the South African delegation at both 1.he W.I.Z.O. and World Zionist Congress recently held in Zurich. •

• Mrs. Segal read ·extracts from Dr.

Vera Weizr11ann's brilliant opening speech at the ~ W.I.Z.O. C<mference, and gave vivid word pictur.es of some of the outstanding, personalities at Conference. No one could fail to be impressed by the high level of intel- ligence and efficiency of the delegates present.

In dealing with the resolutions passed at Congress, Mrs. Segal drew attention to the importance of school- ing in Palestine, and the demand made by the W.I.Z.O. that the Pales- tine Government should subsidise this work, since at present the schools were inadequate to cater for the needs

of all the population.

As part of co-operation with the Women's Mizrachi Organisation, it was decided to vote a sum of £400 per annum towards the maintenance of the existing Mizrachi Meshek for girls.

FTEH seven years of tireless de- votion to the Zionist and Hebraic ideal in this country, Bracha Ben- Yacob has left for Eretz Israel. She has bequeathed to those seeking a little enlightenment in this year of bewilderment, a booklet "Israel, the Cause of Its Survival," a title which, by the way, is far from indicative of its contents.

Miss Ben-Yacob gives briefly but comprehensively an analysis of the nature of a people, and from her de- finition "a common civilisation"

discusses the Hebrew genius. This Judaism, "this immortal heritage," is traced from its brief glory in its own land, through the countries of the Dispersion, towards its never-for- gotten goal, the land of Israel.

Throughout the long pilgrimage the author dissects anti-Semitism in its many phases.·

A clear and detailed resume of the early struggles in Zionist history is the theme of the later chapters.

Miss Den-Yacob produces evidence of the maladministration of the Pales- tinian Civil Service during the recent and early riots. Jmpot~mt as these indictments may seem, thev serve to convince the <loubteTs and waverers of the strength and endurance of the YishU\'.

A feature of the booklet is the Ap- pendi.· which deals specifically with the riots of l!l3G. Well cho en ex- tractL from Di·. Weizmann's peech nt Bu. l , NovP.mh r, 1113 1, ft om ·1 I l

This book, the language and con- ciseness of which is done full justice by the excellence of Millie Lazar's tram;lation from the Hebrew, must

Sl~rely appeal to our South African Jewry. They, fearful and impatient of heavier publications, feel deeply the need of an answer to those ques- tions which so sorely torment thefr minds: from whence do we come, why our strange destiny and whither do we go?

The booklet is obtainable from the Propaganda Department of the S.A.

Zionist Federation at ls. post free.

PIONF.ER THEATRF.'S UNIQUE PRODUCTION

"Begg rs Consolidated, Ltd."

1 Joh 1 n I 1 I thliL l\o\ h '11 g JH •nt d U. th new group of theatrical nthu iast who call themseh·es the Pioneer Theatres. The~· have pro luced

"Beggars Consolidated, Ltd.," at the Library Theatre where it is attract- ing crowded houses nightly. lt will run until October 2.

There can be no doubt of the con- siderable amount of work which went into the making- of so unusual an en- tertainment. 1\Iuch credit is due to the leading workers. tllr. Hermau Hertz's musical direction, with an or- chestra of seven, provided attractive items of Kurt \Veill's music. 1t was all full of strong vitality. The stage sets were entirely new and in cer- tain aspects, amazing. Many of the actors and actresses gave highly flavoured performances and ren-

<lere<l their nicely-pointed lines with good effect .

That there were a number of in- herent faults in the whole production is no real criticism because what the Pioneer players ai:e trying to do is in the nature of an experimental theatre. Such experirr:ents can never be perfect and even the faults are of- ten in themselves interesting. On the whole the organisation can be sin- cerely' congratulated upon its fir;:;t performance.
