ABSTRACT
A preliminary investigation into Cloete's contribution to Aft-ican literature led to the hypothesis that his work as a critic strongly interacts with his poetry. It is shown that this can be traced back to earlier as well as concurrent statements of Cloete, the critic, and that the religious undertones of his poetry are reproduced in this collection in a more poetic manner than in earlier works. The starting point is the assumption that the title ldiolek refers to Cloete's own literary idiolect.
This volume is used as a key tool to achieve the main goal which is to prove the interdependence of Cloete's creative work as an artist and his creative contributions as a literary critic and to describe the unique way in which these contributions express religious themes. . The structuralist approach is taken over in accordance with Cloete's own approach and a framework is established in which the nature, aims and means of each component of the poet-critic combination can be formulated. It is determined that Cloete's views on the essence and meaning of verse as a literary art form are reflected in his poetry.
For example, he stated that the visual elements included in modern artistic texts contribute in a substantial way to their meaning. This cot· is strongly related to his personal style as a poet and the thematic preoccupation with "the eye" in ldiolect. Typical aspects of his lexicon are also determined because repetitive use of certain words is part of literary idiom.
Special attention is paid to scl'iptural intetextuality in ldiolec as well as earlier manifestations of this aspect of Cloete's idiolect. Working within the framework of the Calvinist Christian schools of thought, he has succeeded in an increasingly large way in developing his religious poetic code based on biblical truths. In ldiolek it is strongly demonstrated how the lyrical subject enters into an intimate personal conversation with God, without ever reducing God to the level of man.
By focusing on the deliberate changes made by the poet and the patterns emerging from these procedures, additional facets of Cloete's idiolect can be formulated. Finally, a summary of the findings is compared to and confirmed by the reception of Cloete's first four volumes of vet·se. It is concluded that Cloete's dual role as a poet-critic is complemented by the religious foundation on which he stands and that these components add to the essence and quality of his poetry.
