I am involved in the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative and am aware of the government's housing policy and its underlying principles. The above three experiences make me want to appreciate the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative because I realize it is falling short.

LITERATURE SURVEY

Theology and Development

Program.6 Involvement of the Church in the community is taken from the book The Challenge of Development to the Church7. The first case study to consider is reflected in The Local Congregation Empowering the Urban Poor, with Reference to John Wesley's Social Ethics by Harold Le Roux12 and Inner City Housing and the Role of the Church in Housing Development.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

LIMITATIONS OF THE RESEARCH

DEFINITIONS OF KEY CONCEPTS

  • Community
  • Housing
  • Policy
  • Social housing

According to the framework of A Toolkit for Social Housing Organizations, a policy is a written statement of values and expectations that guide current and future decisions in social housing institutions. 18. Social housing is the process managed by stable and sustainable independent institutions, which encourages the participation of residents in the management of their communities.

CHAPTER OUTLINES

INTRODUCTION

The second chapter of this dissertation considers what contribution Christians could make to the issue of social housing based on evangelical values. This theological reflection will be limited to three broad sections, namely the social practice of John Wesley, the development of the Church and community, and the development of the Church and social housing.

REFLECTION ON JOHN WESLEY' SOCIAL PRACTICE

  • SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EQUALITY
  • EMPOWERMENT OF POOR COMMUNITIES
  • COMMUNITY EDUCATION
  • COMMUNITY CARE

John Wesley was particularly keen on education for the benefit of the poor and disadvantaged. John Wesley gave priority to the poor and vulnerable class of the community through the application of Gospel values.

REFLECTION ON CHURCH AND DEVELOPMENT

I observe that these elements are related to the principles of community development and the role of the Church. When I look at the work of the Methodists worldwide, I am convinced that the Church can do much more.

CHURCH AND HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

In fact, I see that the Church can also be seen as a resource or asset that can contribute to the housing of the community. By speaking of the Church as an asset, we are dealing with its values and its usefulness to the needs of the poor. Another example of home upgrades is one of the ESSA (Evangelical Seminary of Southern Africa) buildings, as shown in the photos below:

To this end, the Ubunye Free Methodist Church tried to respond to the needs of the community in Pietermaritzburg. Special focus was also to reflect on the relevance of the housing policy to address the needs of the poor and vulnerable. In addition, the Ubunye Free Methodist Church has practically applied the social housing framework of upgrading buildings for the housing of the people.

CONCLUSION

INTRODUCTION

HOUSING POLICY AND PRINCIPLES UNDERLYING IT

Every sphere of government must ensure transparency, accountability and fairness in the management of housing development. Public money available for housing development should be spent in such a way as to encourage the investment of private money and the efforts of individuals for housing development. National, provincial and local government must enable the active participation of all stakeholders and potential stakeholders in housing development. 5.

Promoting the participation of affected communities in the planning and implementation of new developments. Maximizing job creation in the construction and allied sectors (in particular the role of labor-based construction and the use of local labor in housing development). Programs for skills transfer, capacity building and upward mobility for both skilled and unskilled workers in housing;

SIX KEY ISSUES CONCERNING SOCIAL HOUSING

  • COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
  • CAPACITY BUILDING
  • SUSTAINABILITY
  • GOVERNANCE
  • SPECIAL NEEDS HOUSING
  • GENDER JUSTICE AND EQUITY

Maintain services throughout the lifetime of the social housing institution. Develop a social housing institution that is successful. Banking: Social housing institutions should have people with practical experience in the mortgage finance industry. Second, the board of directors should make policies and decisions about how the social housing institution should be run.

Fourth, the board must ensure that the social housing institution is well managed on a long-term basis. The Board Development Manual from the Social Housing Foundation discusses other core responsibilities that improve governance in housing institutions. Housing for people with special needs is the fourth consideration in the study of the issue of social housing.

CONCLUSION

INTRODUCTION

THE UBUNYE FREE METHODIST CHURCH

  • BACKGROUND INFORMATION
  • GOALS FOR THE UBUNYE FREE METHODIST CHURCH

Ubunye Free Methodist Church is one of the Free Methodist Churches of Southern Africa. Dan Sheffield and his wife Kathleen arrived from Canada as missionaries and joined the leadership of the Ubunye Free Methodist Church. This critical reflection on the problems of the Pietermaritzburg community clearly explains that the vision of the Ubunye Free Methodist Church has been holistic.

Community service as a third principle describes the ministry of Ubunye Free Methodist Church in the Pietermaritzburg community. As can be noted, Ubunye Free Methodist Church has realized that housing is one of the basic human needs and has therefore sought to meet it. The fourth principle of Ubunye Free Methodist Church's ministry was an effort to build good relationships based on partnerships and networking with community agencies.

DESCRIPTION OF THE UBUNYE COOPERATIVE HOUSING INITIATIVE

  • GEOGRAPHICAL BACKGROUND
  • BROAD DESCRIPTION OF THE UBUNYE COOPERATIVE HOUSING INITIATIVE
  • MISSION AND GOALS OF THE UBUNYE COOPERATIVE HOUSING INITIATIVE
  • MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES
  • CAPACITY BULDING PRINCIPLES
  • CURRENT SITUATION OF THE UBUNYE COOPERATIVE HOUSING INITIATIVE
  • CHALLENGES IN THE UBUNYE COOPERATIVE HOUSING INITIATIVE
  • ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF THE HAVEN 3 )
  • CHALLENGES IN THE HA VEN

From the organizational structure it can be seen that the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative is governed by the Council. 25 Constitution of the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative (Articles incorporated in terms of section 21,1995.). In this context, resident's participation means the role of the tenants in the management of the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative.

Once again, a Residents Committee exists within the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative, but it appears to be inactive. It can be concluded that there is a gender equality problem in the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative. It was previously stated that The Haven operates under the auspices of the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative.

CONCLUSION

The second experience is about the survivors of domestic violence who are forced to go back to the abusers to endure the pain for the sake of their children.

INTRODUCTION

RESIDENT'S PARTICIPATION

Is this not one of the greatest challenges of the church in struggling urban countries today? 34; community builders must plan with people and must connect knowledge with action because action is very much part of the learning process.,4. I therefore recommend that the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative should review its organizational structure to facilitate community participation in the management of their housing initiatives.

I also recommend that the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative should motivate the members of the Residents' Committee by training them on their responsibilities in housing. Cooperative housing initiative can initiate skill training as a key to job creation through self-help projects. These include brick making, cabinet making, tailoring, painting and spraying, car repair, selling vegetables, sweets, building, radio repair, candle making, welding, juice making, fridge repair, hair cutting, carpentry, TV repair, plumbing, cooking and banking, manufacturing gas grill, and sale of handicrafts.5 In turn, the residents of the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative will be empowered and able to support themselves and their dependents.

RESIDENT'S EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • GENDER EQUALITY

I see that the housing policy in terms of gender equality and equal opportunities has not been fully implemented in the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative. Research findings have shown that there is a lack of gender balance in the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative. In addition to involving them in leadership, there is also a need to realize their potential towards housing goals.

Has there been any development or improvement or progress in terms of promoting and promoting gender awareness in the housing sector? How do the issues of women's equality unfold or manifest in practice in the housing sector? 10. First, women should be included in the leadership position of the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative with equal numbers of men and women.

GOVERNANCE

The Sociale Boligfond has taken a step forward on this principle of women's role in the housing process. What are the wider international and national debates that drive focus on gender issues and how do these relate to the housing sector. What can be done to solve the challenges and promote access for women at all levels in the sector.

Secondly, women should be given equal opportunities and power in decision-making on all matters related to the housing process.

I BOARD OF

L~IRE~TORS

  • SPECIAL NEEDS HOUSING -THE HAVEN
  • CONCLUSION
  • HOUSING TENURE OPTIONS!
  • THE UBUNYE COOPERATIVE HOUSINE -LEASER AGREEMENT

In trying to run the shelter more effectively and efficiently, The Haven is faced with these challenges: privacy, confidentiality, security and homelessness of the survivors of domestic violence. In the same vein, Maconachie supports the idea of pennanent housing for the survivors of domestic violence. I would like to propose some future development in The Haven to the Ubunye Cooperative Housing initiative.

Second, the Church must undertake to address domestic violence in the community through special workshops for stakeholders. The Ubunye Free Methodist Church should therefore apply this as a guiding principle in the humanization process. The Tenant may not use a paraffin apparatus at any time in the interior of this building.
