Boksbura

A successful evening in aid of the Boksburg North Talmud Torah build- ing fund was held on the 23rd ult., at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. I. Ben- tel, senr. A large representative gathering was present.

Mr. and Mrs. Ben tel, well known for their fine communal work, personally arranged the evening's entertainment.

A .1ovel competition took place and was won by Mrs. Friedman, of Cin- derella, who in turn donated same to be sold by auction in aid of the funds.

Mr. N. H. Massei was the successful buyer. Mr. A. J. Saretzky, on behalf of the committee, thanked the host and hostess. The entertainment ended towards midnight, realising a fine

um towards the fund.

Bethal

The annual general meeting of the Bethal Zionist Society was held on Sunday, the 7th February.

Dr. and Mrs. D. Ordman, who specially came out from Johannes- burg for the occasion, ably addressed the gathering.

The following officers were elected for the incoming session :-President, Dr. Wolfsohn; Vice-President, Mr.

Abel Stein; Treasurer, Mr. E. Feld- man; Committee: Mesdames M. Hy- man, M. Hirschowitz, S. Friedman, M.

Wolfsohn, Messrs. A. Goldberg, H.

Kark, H. Duke and H. Goldf ein.

It has been decided to continue with the holding of the regular monthly card evenings in aid of the J.N.F.

A suggestion to organise a circul- ating library for the district is under consideration.

Bethlehem

.Mr. Z. Jankelowitz, of Bethlehem, is to be heartily congratulated on the excellent results obtained from bis J.N.F. box during the last clearance when it yielded an amount of £6 ls.

3d. This 'is by far the best result in Bethlehem and compares favourably also with most other centres.

The marria e of Mary Kellman, of East London, to Abe Schneier, o1 Benoni, was solemnised in the East London Synagogue on Sunday, the 10th ult. Rev. O. Altshuler officiated.

The bridesmaids were the Misses Eva Kellman and Hannah Schneier, the best man was Mr. Abe Jacobson, and the poleholders were Dr. I. Sher- man, J. Migdal, Dave Kellman and Max Kellman. Master Berkley acted as page.

A reception was subsequently held at Deal's Hotel, at which Mr. M. J.

Zackon presided. The following toasts were proposed and duly responded to:

Berkley, responded to by Mr. M.

At the wedding· of Mr. Isaac Gaitelband to Miss Lily Cohen, both of East London, which was solemnised on October 18, 1936, a collection was made in aid of the National Fund, which resulted in the sum of £5 being donated.

At the celebration of the Barmitz- vah of Julius, only son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Kaffel, which took place at the Clarendon Hotel on the 13th ult., a sum of £7 10s. was collected on be- half of the National Fund.

At a recent general meeting of the local Hebrew Congregation Mr. R. M.

Bernberg was re-elected president and Mr. V. Levy was elected as hon. sec- retary.

After discussion on various items the meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to Mr. H. Rogow, senr., and Mr. S. Phillips; the former for having officiated at the Rosh Hashona and Y om Kippur Festivals, and the latter as the ex-secretary.

Under the auspices of the local Zionist Society a social gathering was held on the 6th ult., t the re- sidence of Mrs. N. Brozin. The func- tion was very well attended, quite a number of Witbank people coming over for the occasion, and proved a social and financial success.

L. Friedman. As this was the first function since the death of the late Mr. S. Berman, president of the Volksrust Zionist Society, a11 those present rose in honour of his memory.

Mr. B. Nathan acted as chairman and opened the proceedings.

The opportunity was taken of elect- ing a new president, Mr. B. Nathan

.being elected by popular vote to fill

this office.

An enjoyable evening resulted in

Altschuler. Mr. Tabachowitz, vice- chairman of the Zionist Society, pre- sidoed. Rev. Altschuler, who is the new minister of the community, de- livered a most eloquent address for which he was cordially thanked by Mr. David Aires. Later Mr. Edelson spoke briefly on Purim. Recitations and s-0ngs were ably contributed by David, Abey and Nathan Altschuler, Misses Hannah an<l Rosie Aronson, and Mr. Thal. The hostess wa heartily thanked for her hospitality.
