ABERDEEN.

The marriage of Fanny, only daughter of Mr. and ·~h~

late Mrs. E. Ryan, to Jack Cohen, of Joubertina, took place on the 11th inst., at Stockdale, Aberdeen district. The cere- mony was performed by Rev. S. Rubin before a large gathering of relatives and friends.

The sum of £1 ls. was afterwards donated by the bride- groom in aid of the S.A. Jewish Orphanage, which amount has duly been forwarded to that institution.

BETHLEHEM.

A well-01·ganised Simclws Torah social, an-anged by the committee of the Zionist Society, was held at the Royal Hotel on Sunday evening, October 4, and was very well attended.

Musical items were rendered by Rev. M. Altshuler, Mr. J .. Jacob- on and Miss Gwennie Goldberg. Dancing was kept up until a late hour. A hearty vote of thanks was acco1ded to the pro- prietors of the hotel for the use of their premises.

BOTHA VILLE.

On Sunday, the 4th inst., a successful social was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Hotz, unde1 the auspices of the Hebrew Congregation. There was a :representative gathering of local Jewry, with a fair sprinkling· of strangers.

Mr. T. W. Rehr, chairman of'I the congregation, in opening the meeting, thanked Rabbi Feldberg for his untiring and energetic activity on behalf of the community. Rabbi Feldberg then addr ssed the gathering on the subject of "Religion and Torah," which was most interesting and thoroughly appreciated by the audience.

J~AST LO DO .

On th 28th ull. a Succoth Concert \Vas held under the au ·vices of the Jewish Circle in the local ommunal Hall, at which a representative gathering was present. The chairman, R v. 0. Altshuler, gave a brief talk on the meaning of Succoth, after which he called upon the Vice-President, Mr.

Meyer Hertz, who spoke on the significance of the holiday.

The remainder of the evening's programme consisted of the following items, which were well received by the audience:

Piano solo, Mis Noick; song, Mis Alte Hertz; violin solo, Mr. J. Altshuler; Teading, Mr. Addleson; song, Rev. Altshuler;

classical dance, Miss G. Gerowsky; a Tecitation by Miss Charlotte Rabinowitz; Rongs, the mixed choir. A Yiddish play, produced by Mi·. Aing-01·n, was an excellent feature of the pl'Og1·amme, and the acto1· · portmyecl their various parts well. Those who took part were the Misses May, Kopman, Weiner, and MeRsrs. Aingorn, A. Sarnek, J. Altshuler and Kutock.

The chairman proposed a vote of thanks to those who contributed to the evening's entertainment and also thanked Miss Lily Lutrin, who accompanied the various musical items.

Thanks are also due to Mrs. Jack Berman, who was in charge of the refreshments.

HANOVER.

Thanks to the energetic efforts of Messrs. A. Hoffman, L.

Hoffman, J. Simson and L. Klein, a Minyan was held here dur- in the High Festivals. The Minyan was attended by the little band of local Jewry as well as by a number from the neigh- bouring districts. Messrs. A. Hoffman and L. Klein officiated, and their rendering of the service was greatly appreciated by the congregants. The duties of shnmas were carried out by Mr. Klein.

KRUGERSDORP.

. The La~lies' Committee hel<l a concert and dance recently m the . J ew1sh Communal Hall in aid of the South African Campaign. for the Reconstruction of East European Jewry.

The orgamsers were Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. Stutzen, assisted by Miss Fanny Heyman and Mrs. Nelly Alpert.

As a result, Mr. H. Friedman has forwarded :.o the head office of the campaign the sum of £24 3s. 9d.

MIDDELBURG, CAPE.

Su_nday the ilOth inst., the genernl meeting of the Z~omst S?c1ety was held at the synagogue, presided over by the v1ce-pres1dent, Mr. B. Capcan. Mrs. Segall thanked the outgoing secretary, Miss J. Sain- ker, for her untiring services to the society during the past years, to which Miss Sainker suitably responded.

PAROW.

On the 12th inst. the Bris Milah of the infant son of Mr.

and Mrs. L. Freedman took place. Mr. and Mrs. Freedman, of Wynberg, acted a Kwater, while the duties of Sondik were carried out by Rabbi Lip hitz, ho later delivered an interesting addres. on Heb1·ew education. Mr. Michaelson also spoke. The sum of £3 13s. was collected in aid of charity.

VA RHYNSDORP.

The monthly meeting of the Young Israel Society was hcl<.l on the 11th inst. at th t'esidence of Mr. and Mrs. M. J off . Rev. R. Wulf, chairman, prcsid •d. Mr. J. Gr enstein of Stel- l nbosch, deliver d a lectur' on "Jos 1>h Trumpeldo1: '' which was much appreciate~ by his hearers. The lectur r \~as hear- tily thanked by Dr. B. BeTOlsky and Miss R. Binder. Miss Ch. Gelb proposed a vote of thanks to the host and hostess for their kindly hospitality.

Mr. Greenstein also attended the committee meeting of the society held the same day, and gave some interesting points concerning the Judean Central Council and the Young Israel movement in general.

WOR ESTER.

There was an enthusiastic audience at the social held on the 21st ult., in the Zionist Hall, under the auspices of the Junior Zionist Society.

The programme was a good one and met with a favourable reception. The musical sketches were much appreciated . and thanks are due to the Misses Rosie Behrman and Lily Volks.

Dancing was then indulged in until a late hour.

Recently Mr. M. Rabinowitz called a meeting of the Junior Zionist Society, which was attended by a repre entative gather- ing. The election of hon. officers took place and resulted as follows: Chairman, R. Rabinowitz; Vice-Chairman, Miss C.

Sakinofsky; Secretary and Treasm·er, C. Goldberg. Committee:

Misses L. Lange, B. Goodman, F. Felthun, Masters P. Sennett, M. Sacks, I. Katz, B. Broide, D. Sanders.

A debate was then held, which proved most interesting.

Mr. M. Rabinowitz delivered an address on Revisionism, at the conclusion of which it was decided to form a Revisionist Party in the Zionist Society.

BLOEMFO TEIN.

The monthly meeting of the Women' Zionist Society was held on the 20th inst., at Mrs. Friedman's residence. Mrs.

Tcherney presided over a good attendance of members and several visitors.

Mr. Advocate N. Bryer delivered an interesting lecture on

"A Few Reflections on Zioni m," which was thoroughly appreci- ated by his hearers, at the conclusion of which a discussion en- sued. A vote of thanks to the lecturer for his informative ad- dress, was proposed by Mr . Lovious and a vote of thanks to Mrs. Friedman for her kindly hospitality, was proposed by Miss Tcherney.

GEORGE.

In the report which appeared in our issu of September 18th dealing with the bazaar held on the 11th and 12th of that month, the names of Mesdames .T. Landsman, S. Joseph and M. Slugman were inadvertently omitted. These three ladies, in their capacity of organiser and chairlady, hon. secretary and treasurer respectively, of the committee in charge of the arrangements, worked energetically and devotedly, and the success of the function was largely due to their untiring efforts.

LIVI GSTONE ( orthern Rhodesia).

Mr. S. Rabinowitz 01 Bulawayo visited Livingstone on the 13th September and addressed the members of the Livingstone Herzl Zionist Society at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. E. Kopel- owitz, on Zionist achievements and the Dunam Drive. Numerous question8 were put forward to which Mr. Rabinowitz ably re- plied, and the add1ess closed with a hearty vote of thanks passed by Rev. Diamond.

Kopelowitz, on Sunday, 25th September, and the following office-bearer!:l were elected for the ensuing year: President Mr. L. Hochstein, vice-pre ident Mrs M. Shapiro, secretary treasurer and collector Mis Helene Sher, as i ·tant secretary Mi s Betty Levitz. Com- mittee: Mrs. \V. Fredman, Mrs. H. Susman, Messrs A. Lessem, E. Kopelowitz and Ha1·old Grill.

Rev. and Mrs. Diamond wer also pre ent, and during the evening refreshments, under the auspices of the Zionist Society, were served The meeting then closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the chair, proposed by Mr. M. Taube and econded by Rev. Diamond.

A successful function, organised by the local Young Israel Society, was the "At Home," held on Sunday, the 18th inst., at the Hotel Belgrave. There wa an attendance of some 200 people including representatives from every Peninsula society.

The president of the society, Mr. S. Frank, was. in the chair.

Mr. N. Emdin extended a welcome to the gathering on behalf of the local Hebrew Congregation. Mr M. Horwitz, the president of the S.A. Young Israel Federation, gave an interesting ad- dress on the organisation of the Young Israel Movement.

Mr. H. Zuckerman, the president of the Judean Centrai Council, dealt with the position of Jewry at the inception of political Zionism and with its problem of to-day. He referred to the critical situation of the Zionist Organisation and urged the juniors to do their duty.

Mr. oris Rome sang three delightful melodies to the ac- companiment of Miss .Greenbaum, . while Miss S. Kudo.wit~ky gave a piano solo. and Miss L. Kudow1tsky .a humorous recitation.

During the evening Mr. Zuckerman auctioned a box of choco- lates which realised £11 5s.

A dance in aid of the Cape Jewish Orphanage was held at the G.rand Hotel, on the 29th ult. Thanks to MT. and Mrs. A. L.

Barwm, who so kindly arranged the function and also provided the refreshments, the um of £13 10s. 6d. was raised. Thank

are also. due to Mr. Sacks of Capetown who donated a brass bowl which was old by American auction.

There was a pleasant gathering at the re ·idence of Mr.

and Mrs. A. Anstey of Biesjespoort Station on the occasion of the Bri.<; Mil ah of their inf ant son last month. A numb el' of people had come in from Vfotoria West and from other places, including Capetown.

At the initiative of Rev. E. Stein of W orce ·ter who officiated, a collection was made amounting to about

This has been handed to Rev. A. P. Bender of Capetown for distribution at his discretion amongst five Jewish institutions in Capetown, whilst Mr. Anstey, in addition, made a pecial donation of £1 ls. for the Jewish National Fund.

LISBURY.

The recent High Festival services, which were well atten- ded were ably conducted by the Rev. J. J. Rosin, assisted by Messrs. R. Middledorf and H. M. Rosenberg.

There. was a good attendance at the annual g n - ral meeting of the local Hebrew Congregation, which took place on the 20th ult. Mr. L. Braude, p1·esident, was in the chair. The minister's report, which dealt with the activities of the congregation from every aspect, was read and the balance sheet, which proved favourable, was adopted. W RCESTER.

On the 14th insi,. the sixth monthly conversazione was held, under the auspices of the B'nei U'benoth Zion As. ociation, at the Zionist Hall, presided over by Mr. A. Volk. Mr. and Mrs.

E. Traub acted as host and hostess.

Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Abrahams, who had just returned from overseas, were also present. Mr. Abrahams delivered an interest- ing address in the course of which he outlined the history of Zionism and enlarged upon th~ pre. ent ituation. He then gave a brief resume of the proceedings at the recent Zionist Con- gress. Mr. Sennett proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Abra- hams. Current news items were read by Mr. J. J. Wilk and the musical programme was provided by Mr . A. Volks, Miss R.

Behrman, Miss M. Broidie and Mr. L. Volks. Rev. E. Stein gave a short lecture on "Calendar Reform," and pointed out how the suggested changes would affect the observance of the Sab- bath day.
