On the 21st ultimo, a well-attended Channkah service was held at the Synagogue, at which the It v. Bayever officia te<l.

On the 28th ultimo, l\Ir. and ~lrs . .A. chmahmam1 celebrated the thirteenth birthday of their <laughter, l\lalschi, by givin~ a H~brew ~oncert, iu which thirteen children dressed rn J cw1sh nat10nal costume', took pa.rt.

The con~ert began with the singing of tho Hutikvah, f?l- lowed with 'hir Hadgalim, which wa sung by the choir.

The song S'oo "Zion wa rendered by Oscar Schmahmann.

Kipni.). was ren- dered delightfully by eight children, who each krndled the lirrhts separately, meamrhil relating the who1 tory of C'ha.nukah. Other items were r ndered by E ter ·wolkiu, Sophie 8chmahmann, Polly Bloom, _\f iss l\J. Drozin, and a toe dance by l\lalschi and Sophie SehmaJ1mann and Polly Dloom.

PRETORIA.

Although the ?rctoria. Young Israel Society has not been as active durrng the la t three months a in previous month , it has by no means gone to sleep, and the success of the few affair that were given shows that interest in it has not abated in the least. On September 27th a very succes ful hat debate took place. 'The members thoroughly entered into the spirit of the debate and very }jvely discus ions ensued. On November 8th a club recrf'ation evening was held, which was also very s~ccessft?-1, the members thoroughly enjoying themselves. This affair was followed. b~ a lecture, given bv Mr. J. Alexand r, of the .A. Z10rnst Federation on November 31st. He delivered an in piring addre. ' on ''The Jews of To-clay," which was much appreciated by a large audience.

PORT ELIZABETH.

The Zionist ball, organised by the Ladies' Zionist League, at the .New :_Hum wood Cafe ball-room, was one of thE' most outstandmg functions of the season. Close upon ?OO dancers filled ~he bea~tiful and spacious hall, dharmrngly dccora~.ed with national :flags and Zioni t colour.. The danc11~g arrangements were admirable and the music left nothu?-g. to be desired. Both sociall; and financially it wa. a di.. tmct sucees , and I understand that the National Fund will benefit through it to an approxi- mate amount of £40.

The local Zionist ociety ha forwarded to the Zioni t Federation £14, being proceed of a recent auction sale.

'The distribution of prizes to the succes ful pupils attending the Congregational Hebrew and Religion Clas s took place on Sunday. December the 24th, at the Guildhall.

There wa a very good attendance of both parents and c.:hildren. Mr. L. Braude (president Hebrew Congregation) presided, and )fr . B. I. Hoffman (wife of the vice-pre i- dent) presented the prizes. Rev. Rosin presented the report of the year' work. In the course of his remark h0 drew attention to the nece sity of regular attendance, thf' importance of the B ebre\\' language, and the co-opera- tion oi: parents with th teacher. He stated that tho examiners were highly pl~ased with the results in every . tandard.

.A heartv vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Ro in on the moti~n of l\1r. Braude, president, seconded by Mr. tein. trea urer. The meeting terminated with a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. Hoffman and the chairman. The ladies' society liberally served sweets and cakes.

The annual general meeting of the Zionist ociety wa held on unday evening, tho 21 t December, at the Guildhall, followed by a ocial and dance. There were about 60 ladic and gentlemen present. l\fr. L. Braudc, chairman, pre~id cl, and >delivered his report of the year' work.

The Rev. ,J. J. and Mr . Ro in have received new by cable to the effect that their elde t son, Isidore, who was a medical tud nt at Trinity College, Dublin, has pas ed, and fully_ qualified a. ~LB., Ch.B., B.A., B.A.O., Dublin Univer. ity, and L.:\I., Coomb Ho pital, Dublin, taking third placf' in his final with distinction.

Dr. Ro in is an old pupil of the Jeppe High chool, Johannesburg, where he matriculated. When only 16 years old he entered the Univer ity of the Witwatersrand as a medical student. In his second year of study he wa · the only successful candidate in gaining the Dublin Univer- sity Exhibition cholar hip, and proceed d to Ireland a little over three years ago. His career at Trinity has be n a brilliant one. Dr. Rosin's ultimate intention is to speciali e as a surgeon.
