The festival concluded with the singing of " God av the King '' and '' Hatikvah. ''

The distribution of prizes to the pupils of the Hebrew chool took place in the chool Chamber on ... unday vening, 17th December, the third day of Chanucah. There ,~rn a large gathering, and Rev.

Alt huler conducted the eYenin<Y serYice and performed the ceremony of setting up the light . Mr. A. Navid, pre ident of the school, who was in the chair, reported in detail on the work and progress of the clas es, and called upon the principal, l\Ir. Pogrund, to addre the rhilclren on the hi torL of Chanucah. :.\fr. ~I. Pogrund, in a lengthy addres , explained the value of that gr at historic feast for the Jewish nation and for the J ewi h youth in particular. :\Ir. Ab Iman, president of the congregation, and Mrs. _ . Navid distributed the prize to the ucce sful pupil who distingui hed themselve at the examination held bv Rev. Wolk. The committee hereby accord /th ir gr ~t appreciation to the ladie who upplied refre hments to all the children of the school, and to all tho e who a isted in the arrang - ment of the ev ning. The meetina concluded with a vote of thanks to the chairman and the inging of

" Hatikvah."

Zionist Federation £22 for 22 golden shekolim. The names of the contributors appear elsewhere in this i sue. We call attention to this exemplary response by the Jews of Piet Retie£ to the call of the Zionist leader for support of the Zionist Organisation, and trust that their example will be universally followed throughout South Africa.

Port Elizabeth.

This is a thoroughly representative body of workers, from whom much is expected, and who have alredy planned out a programme of active Zionist work for their period 0£ office.

The recent visit Otf Dr. Olsvanger to Port Eliza- beth was a period of intense propaganda activity amongst every section of the local community, young and old, and has greatly stimulated local Zionist senti- ment. We earnestly trust that this intensification of local Zionism will produce great results, spiritual as well as material.

At the wedding of .J.:fiss Greenblatt to Mr. Wasser- man, of Johannesburg, on the 7th inst. Mr. Sain, recently a'l'rived from Palestine, made an effective Zionist speech. A collection was made, rea?si!3g .£6 3s., which has been forwarded to the Z10mst Federation for allocation in equal shares to the fund for the transference of orphans to Palestine and the .Jewish National ] und.

The "Wedding wa ... r cently solemnized at the lo ·al synagogue between Rebecca, eldest daughter 0£ l\Ir.

and the late Mrs. Groll of Robertson, and Jacob Berman of Malmesbury. During the reception a cake was put up for auction and bought by Mr. Greenberg,

\vho again put it up for ale. It was then bought by :\Ir, hapiro, the total amount realised being £10, which has been forwarded to the S.A. Zionist Federa- tion for allocation in equal shares to the Ukraine Orphan ' Fund and the Palestine National Restoration Fund.

Springbok.

At a Chanucah service held at the local synagogue on December 17th, £2 was collected for the J ewi. h National Fund.

Stellenbosch.

On the 7th inst., the Brismilah of the infant on oi Mr. and Mrs. J. Shulman took place. Rev. Kassel officiated, and Mr. S. Marcus presided over the nurr..erous relatives and friends present, and made a collection which realised £2 15s. This was then sold by American auction to the parents for £18. 1 , . for the Cape Jewish Orphanage, Aged Home and Bikur Cholim. Various speeches were made, and the proceedings closed with the singing of '' Hatikrnh. '' Wyn berg.

The local Zionist Association has forwarded to the Zionist Federation £38 for the Jewish National Fund, being proceeds of a Chanukah concert, organised b;v the association and given in the Wynberg Town Hall on December 14th. The function proved a complete success, and the organiser are to be heartily con- gratulated.

The opening item of the concert was the Lebende :\I'neiro, a choral number conducted by Mr. Rabino- witz, with solo by Miss R. Bloch. The Misses . Jaffe and Cohen gave songs, and the Misses Rudolph and Effman Yiddish recitations. Interesting tableaux vivants were given, depicting happy workers gathering in the sheaves from the harvest fields of Palestine and singing joyously at their work. Miss Rose Carmel, a gifted elocutionist, thrilled the audience with the sleep- 'rnlking scene from "Macbeth," and then gave, b~·

Hecker, with his his 'phone fiddle and his repertoire of stories, found favour. .Eight little boy and girl . carrying the Chanukah Lichtelach, sang Hebrew song . whilst an orchestra, organised by Mr. Shaskolsky, di - pensed musical items. The Misses Lily Rifkin und Dora Levy accompanied the vocal solos.

At the conclu ion, Mr. 0. Firkser, hon. treasurer of the association, briefly thanked the artistes and the organisers, also the community for their support.

The association has also forwarded a further in tal- ment of £65 on a~ount of local donation to the Keren Ha.yesod.

It has also been o:f the g1:eatest assistanc in collecting and forwarding the subscriptions of a large number of local subscriber to the Zionist Record.
