Aaron, 'rho addressed th meeting, deplor d the state of affairs he found ex:sting in the ·ociety, and delivered a stirring appeal to the Jews of Doornfontein, th c Jewish suburb of Johannes- burg, to 'vake up, and take their Zionit:im seriously.

After the business of the meeting was concluded l\fr. H. Kroomer took the chair and introduced Dr. J.

Harte, ·who delivered a very interesting lecture on the subj cct, " ] s Zionism supplanting the Jewish religion? ·'

He nwntioned tbat in his opinion Judaism was gradually losing ih; hold on the Jewis~ people, and with some it was, to a certain extent, bemg supplanted b:v the nationalist ideal. He went on to say that it

":as quite true that the J e\,·s formed not merely a reli(Tious communitv, but also a nation. The national ide~ was not a ne,~· one. The hope for the ultimate return to the land of our fathers had existed long in the heart of I rael, and for many centuries was prob- ably the greate. t factor in keeping alive the sense 0£

The lecturer insisted that every Jew worthy of that name 'vas a Zionist, irrespective of his differences with others. But, he said, there wa a tendency among. t Zionist towards a form of liberal Judaism, in which every Jew was a law unto h;mself. If reform

Dr. Harte, in conclu ·ion, said that he beli ved it would be well if Zionism \Yorked more in concord with orthodoxy; if it helped to foster the belief in tho laTI'S of our forefathers and the maintenance of our ancient rites.
