(Frorn Our Own Correspondents.)

Bloemfontein

The personnel of the local Young Israel Society committee is as follows: Chairman, Mr. Ralph Lawrence; vice-chairman, ~r.

S. Simmons; treasurer, Miss Helen Lewis;

secretaries, Misses G. Lande and B. Spiro;

Menorah commissioner, Mr. C. Lawren~e;

committee members, Miss E. Caplan, T.

Davidson, G. Fainsinger and Messrs. S.

Hoffman, L. Goldes and E. Eliasov (co- opted).

On Tuesday, the 22nd ult., the Ladies' Zionist Society held a pleasant function to welcome Rabbi Dr. Romm. The chairman, Mrs. Tcherny, stated that Dr. Romm had so endeared himself to everyone, that he could now be welcomed as an old member of the community.

After a pianoforte solo by Miss Ray Kim- mel, Mr. M. Pencharz, chairman of the Senior Zionist Society, expressed the plea- sure he felt at appearing on the same plat- form as Dr. Romm. He also voiced his ap- preciation of the ready and consistent ser- vice, which the Ladies' Society had given to the National cause, particularly to the National fund. He appealed for greater unity and co-operation in support of the Keren Hayesod and Keren Hayemeth, and further made an appeal to the parents to consider carefully the vocational training of their children.

Mr. Marcus Sacks, chairman of the Herzlia Society, made an appeal on behalf of the Chalutz Scheme. Mt'. I. Fogel, National Fund Commissioner, also spoke.

Mr. Ralph Lawrence was present, repre- senting the Young Israel Society.

Rabbi Dr. Romm delive/ed an addre::;s on

"Women and Zionism." He explained that in view of the fact that women were more restricted than men, the latter did most of the pioneering work, representing 80 per cent. of the population in Palestine. Those girls who managed to get away, appeared to be glad to be able to till the soil. Pales- tine could only be built up, continued the speaker, by giving up certain old attach- ments for a higher and more spiritual life

-that of National rejuvenation.

Mr. J. Fainsinger and Miss C. Fain- singer then rendered a flute duet, accom- panied by Miss G. Fainsinger' at the piano.

At the conclusion of the lecture, which was received with great enthusiasm, a vote of thanks was moved by Mrs. M. Friedman and seconded by Mr. D. Davidson, afte1· which Miss H. Lewis obliged with a pianoforte solo. Mr. J. Lovius moved a vote of thanks to the chair, and made an appeal fo1· the support of the Talmud Torah and the local communal institutions.

Botha ville

The annual general meeting of the Zionist Society was held in the Synagogue on May 21st. Mr. M. Cohen presided and reviewed the Society's work of the past twelve months. He also read the financial report, which showed very creditable and satisfac-

tory results. The following officers and committee for the ensuing year were elected:-Chairman, Mr. M. Brill; vice- chairman, Mr. G. H. Kahan; treasurer, Mr.

I. Cohen; secretary, Mr. Sam Tankel; com- mittee, Mesdames H. J. Heller, E. Hare, Miss F. Sacks, and Messrs. I. W. Behr and B. Staockiner; auditors, Mes. rs. H.J. Heller and M. Cohen.

M1·. Brill thanked the outgoing chairman f 01· his valued service~ to the society dur- ing his year of office, and e.-pressed the hope that he would continue to give his whole-hearted support to the society. He also made a very strong appeal fo1 support to the Zionist cause, trusting that every Jew would do his full duty.

Kimberley

At the monthly " At Home 'i of the Women's Zionist League, held on Sunday night, the 28th ult., at the Queen's Hotel, Adv. M. Alexander was the guest of honour.

and Mrs. B. Horwitz (song).

Mr. Alexander, in his address, dealt with the Jewish problem in South Africa to-day, and explained the Zionist aim. He made an earnest appeal for loyalty to the leader-

ship, not only of S.A. Jewry, but of the Zionist Movement. He decried the bitter pai·ty spirit which had eaten its way into the Zionist Movement. It seemed as if the party spirit had triumphed over the ideal, he said.

Other speakers were: Mr. Addleson (East London), Mr. Jackson (Capetown), Adv. M.

Comay (Capetown), and Adv. D. Cohen.

A vote of thanks was proposed by Mr.

Geordie Ai·onson.

A most enjoyable cultural afternoon was held by the Women's Zionist .L~ague at the residence of Mrs. Mendel Ra1ssm, on '\Ved- nesday, the 9th ult. Dr. Deb rah Katzen,

Mrs. S. Deuton, Mrs. Levy and Mrs. H.

Cohen, of Johannesburg, and about 60 mem- bers of the League were present. Mrs. T · Raissin welcomed the visitor .

Mrs. Levy and Mrs. Cohen rendered m~si

cal items. Dr. Katzen spoke on Palestme and on the Women's Keren Hayesod ca!ll- paign, and Mrs. Denton delivered an in- teresting address. Mrs. S. Cantor pro- posed a vote of thanks to the visitors and the hostess.

As a result of a raffle the sum of £2 lls.

was realised.

During last month "at homes" were held by Mrs. C. Lurie, Mrs. Louis Friedman and Mrs. S. Cantor. On Wednesday, the 16th ult., an afternoon tea took place at the home of Mrs. M. Klewansky, and on the

23rd ult., Mr~. M. Friedman held an even- ing entertainment. Four further functions are to be held for the purpose of raising funds. In addition, cultural meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month.

Recently a committee represen- tative of all local Jewish organisations, was elected to manage the Keren Hayesod Cam- paign. It is anticipated that their efforts will meet with every success.

Oudtshoorn

The monthly meeting of the Herzl Ladies' Zionist Society took place at the residence of Mrs. S. Noll, Market Street, on Thurs- day, 17th May. There was a fair attend- ance. A very interesting paper on " Women and Palestine," by Mrs. L. Greenberg, was read in .committee, as also a most interest- ing news sheet of Zionist activities for the past month. Both these interesting papers were forwarded by the Women's Zionist Council, and were much appreciated by all present. Miss S. Kussel reported that she had had the privilege of attending one of the meetings of the Women's Zionist Coun- cil, while on holiday in Johannesburg.

Port Elizabeth.

The first "At Home" of the Port Eliza- beth Ladies' Zionist League since the gen- eral election, was held at the residence of Mrs: D. Jacobson, Buckingham Road, on the 15th ult. Mrs. R. H. Freedman was in the chair; she asked all present to rise as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mr. H. J. Rogaly, who had passed away on the 13th May.

The chairlady spoke of the importance of the forthcoming Keren Hayesod cam- paign, and asked the ladies to assist and make it an outstanding success.

Mrs. Herman KatzJ read a paper written by Mrs. L. Greenberg entitled "Women and Palestine," which dealt with the wonderful work carried out by the "Wizo." This proved of great interest. Mrs. A. Levy read a letter sent by Mrs. B. Weinronk, giving a description of her tour in Palestine.

The Women's Zionist League organised a Flower Day on Lag B'Omer as a result of which an amount of £12 Os. 4d. was raised for the Jewish National Fund. It is hoped that this Flower Day will now be- come an annual event.

Potchefstroom

Under the aucpices of the Potchefstroom Zionist Society Mrs. S. M. J o:ff e and Miss A. Rudolph organised a card eveening on behalf of the Jewish National Fund. As a result of this function the sum of £10 was raised.

Queenstown

The Bnei and Bnoth Zionist Society re- port that as a result of the bridge drive held at the residence of Mrs. D. Melmed in March an amount of £2 lls. was realised for the Jewish National Fund.

Strand-Somerset West

The first conversazione of the current year, under the auspices of the Zionist As- sociation, was held at the Grand Hotel, Somerset West, on Sunday, the 6th ult., Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Jaffe acting as host and hostess.

Advocate M. S. Comay, the speaker of the evening, in dealing with the subject,

"Our Present Position," emphasised that, in spite of apparent freedom, the Jews of South Africa should not ignore various warnings which had been given. Anti- Se1nitism was growing, and Zloni m alone supplied an outlet which '·ould preserve the dignity and faith of the Jew.

In the discussion which followed Messrs.

Horwitz, Dembovsky and J a:ff e took pa1·t, and a vote of thanks to the speaker was propo ed by Mr. W. Miller and e onded by Mr. B. Cantor.
