The annual general meeting took place in the Talmud Torah Hall, Woodstock, on Sunday mornini:r.

Mr. P. Gordon was in the chair and stated that the Commiltee had carried out the year's work in an excellent manner.

The congregation had at all times given every support to local Jewish institutions.

There was, howe\'er. a growing lack of inlerest shown by members in the affairs of the Congregation and he made a strong appeal to members lo support the congrega- tion both morally and financially.

He was pleased to be able to report that the bond on houses had been redl)ced by

£75 and the Burial Fund Account increased by £20. The Kosher Butchery was giving every satisfaction.

Mr. A. J. Basker presented the revenue and expenditure accounts and urged that a etop-order S) stem for subscriptions be intro- duced and that an early canvass be made for the enrolment of new members.

The adoption of the report was carried unanimously.

Mr. P. Marks mO\ed a vote of thanks to the Chairman, \Ir. P. Gordon, and paid a tribute to him for l1i~ tireless and unselfish work 0n hehalf of the congregation.

It is not necessary to speak here of Oizen- goff. Professor Struck is a pioneer in Jewish art. His etchings hang in many households. He, also. is not one-sided. He has active Mizrachi sympathies, and until recently spent a parl of each year in Zionist work in Germany. Mr. Berligne is a mem- ber of the Executive of the V aad Leumi, the National Council of Palestine Jews.

Coming from Russia thirty years ago, he was one of the founders of the Herz;ia Gymnasia in Tel-Aviv and its treasurer durin~ its difficult first years. He co-operated with Ruppin in the founding of the Workers Bank, and has been a member of the V aad Leumi since its beginning.

Cape Jewish Orphanage.

ANNU AL GENERAL MEETING.

The twenty-fifth annual general meeting of members and donors of the Cape Jewish Orphanage was held at the Home on Sun- day morning.

Mr. J. WEINREICH was in the chair, and in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, reviewed the history of the Institution for the last twenty-five years.

They had started from very small begin- ning::; and were proud of their achievements.

He welcomed the past presidents, all of whom with the exception of two were present and thanked them for the great interest they had always shown and were still showing in the institution. He particularly referred to the magnificent work done by Mr. I.

Ochberg in bringing over the Russiai1 or]Jhans who had grown up into good Jews and Jewesses and excellent citizens.

The presidents had been well supported by their committees and the general com- munity all over South Africa. He extended a cordial welcome to the country representa- Li ves-the Committee was very grateful for their continued support.

Mr. Weinreich then ref erred to the f acl that to mark the occasion of the silver jubilee it had been decided to expand the nursery accommodation and appealed for support.

In conclusion, he thanked the staff of the Home and Office and the Secretary, Mr. E.

Kloot, for their lo~alty and devotion to the interests of the Institution.

Mr. B. JOSEPH seconded the adoption of the Report and balance sheet. The in- crease in expenditure, he said, v.as due to Lhe fact that for the first time depreciatio11 on buildings , linen and crockery had been '\ ritten off. The) had also had other expenses, bringing up the total to ahout

£ 1,000, but in spite of this the balance sheet

~till showed a surplus. He paid a tribute lo Mr. Ise Levy. who had resigned his posiLion as hon. auditor, and thanked the new auditors, Iessr". _\le Thal & Co. He abo thanked the E erntive and the Senetary for their great help and support. .

Dr. Karfunkel, a German Jewish refugee vd10 st-Ltled in Nanking four months ago, has been granted Chin se citizenship.

Dr. Karfunkel is believed to be the first rd ugee from Germany to receive Chinese citizenship. He is fifty-six years old and is practising dentistry in Nanking, where he numbers many high Government officials among his patients. He formerly resided jn Berlin.-J.T.A.

A demand for the prohibition of shechita in the Duchy of Luxemburg, voiced in the Chamber by the Socialist Deputy Weirich, has been categorically rejected by the Government. Premier Bech, who is a member of the Catholic Party, replying to

the world. It was a most popular institu- tion, and he hoped that with the jubilee year the support would be even greater.

RABBI M. Ch. MIRVISH said that the institution was fortunate in that it had al ways had presidents and committees de- voted heart and soul to its interests. Not only the material welfare of the children hut the spiritual also was looked after and they were growing up into good Jews and Jewesses. He hoped the institution would continue the excellent work with God's blessing.

Mr. L. GRADNER said that the institu- tion had developed in a way no other in- stitution had done. It was a sound policy lo create a reserve fund, so that they could he self-supporting in years to come. He appealed for support for the forthcoming Ma) Fafr in aid of the Orphanage Extension Fund and the Zionist Hall.

STODEL, on behalf of the Committee, presented an illuminated address to Mr. Tse Lev~ who had acted as Hon. Auditor for Lhe last twenty-four years and who had found it necessary recently to resign. He paid a tribute to him for the great services he had rendered to the institution.

An urgent appeal is made by the Com- mittee of the Cape Jewish Board of Guardians, for parcels of men's, women's and children's clothing of every description, and footwear. The Board's present stock is very much depleted, and in view of the approaching Passover Festival, there are inan) applications by those in need for various articlPs of clothing. The Com- mjttee will gratefully acknowledge all parcels sent in to the office of the Board, Lloyds' Buildings, 58, Burg Street, Cape Town.

They are particularly in need of men's suits and shirts.
