BRIEF OUTLINE OF TOPIC AND NAMING PRACTICES

INTRODUCTION

Mzolo states in Bryant (1965) that an address name or epithet common to every member of the clan, was usually the personal name of an old celebrity thereof, and is now properly applied, only in polite conversation, to every clan member who being called to him made him feel like a participant in this glory. Chapter 2 of this thesis mentions that Shangase as the author's surname is initially a nickname, with that Shangase's first personal name being 'Mkheshane'. According to Cope, the clan name is the personal name of the founder of the clan and personal names are essentially names of praise.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The clan name itself is taken as the name of the founder of the clan, or perhaps of some particular famous member of it. Toponyms have a lot to do with the study of the names of the places of the provinces, whether they are natural or artificial, e.g. It is the study of the experiences, thoughts, words and actions of people in the past.

LITERATURE REVIEW

For the history of the Shangase and other related tribes, their history is contained in Bryant. Krige (1950:23) deals with the Kinship System and social organization of the Zulus which includes patterns of behavior within the family. Ngubane (1998) looks at the historical background of the Ngunis and the people of Ingwavuma district.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The thesis will provide the legitimacy of the researcher through the family tree of the Shangase clan. The researcher is mostly interested in this study because as a member of the Shangase community, he has a thorough knowledge of the Shangase tribe that is located. The entire history of the Shangase tribe will be given in detail in chapter 2 of this thesis.

Mnumzane (chief of the iNduna region) in recognition of his good services rendered by Sibeshe to the royal family of the Shangase clan. Nzama is Tomane's son born from his second wife (iKhohlo) while Mvula is born from his first wife (iNdlunkulu). The arrangement of huts in the Shangase household is based on the status of the various wives.

At the end of the thesis, samples from Annex I - Personal names, Annex II - Place names, Annex III - Praise names, Annex IV - Map will be given. Qualitative data collection was carried out through random sampling in the Thafamasi (KwaShangase) area, which is predominantly populated by the Shangase tribe. A map of the area and a video tape were found at the Traditional Affairs Office at Ndwedwe Court.

On the whole, this study explores the overview of the personal names, anthroponymic study, place names, the toponymic study and the personal roses to the total exclusion of animal and plant names. Other various forms of the word "Shangase" will still be shown in detail in this chapter, for example the locative structure, which also exists in various forms. This will be used in names of "Amakhosi", princes, princesses and commoners from all over the tribe.

DERIVATIONAL MORPHOLOGY OF MALE AND FEMALE PERSONAL NAMES

It is important to mention that personal names are derived or inflected from different word categories, as this is indicated in the appendix at the end of this thesis. It should also be stated that the personal names that are inflected from nouns usually have a compound noun that is overt or hidden. The personal names derived from verbs with a subjective concord, mostly in the plural or singular form' have a simple noun prefix.

Personal names derived from verbs differ in the following verbal extensions, i.e. productive extensions: the neuter, -ek-, the passive -iw-or-w-, the perfective -il-, the reciprocal -an-, the applied -el - and non-productive extensions: the stative real - al - , the inverted -ul- and -uluk-, the denominational -z- and the combination of extensions. The other names are derived from the diminutive -ana- and the argumentative -kazi ego amakhehla + -ana = UMakhehlana. It was said earlier that the personal names derived from nouns have overt or covert compound noun prefixes.

The radical velar "K" is epenthetized between the negative morpheme, if it is a vowel, and the noun prefix u - to avoid frontal vowels. Class 1a u- and the base prefix of each noun prefix are added to form the compound noun prefix. Personal nouns derived from verbs with subjective agreement have open compound noun prefixes, while those without subjective agreement, which are regular verb stems, have a simple noun prefix.

In this section we can deal with personal nouns derived from extended verbs that attach the following word extensions·: productive extensions: neuter - ek -, passive -iw- or -W-, perfective -il-, reciprocal - an-, used - el- and causative-is-. stative actual -al-, reflexive -ul- and -uluk-, nominative -Z-, extension -m- and combination of extensions.

Nicknames are usually derived from sociocultural and anthropological events, physical appearance, practical actions, certain acquired experiences, ethical and ethnological attitudes, personal traits and characteristics, and behavioral patterns of the people who bear the nickname. Nicknames are also influenced by different family backgrounds, where parents play an important role in encouraging or discontinuing nicknames. He says that nicknames are meaningful names that reveal some aspect of the wearer's personality.

Fucilla and Costa suggests that nicknames arose because there were a large number of identical surnames in each place, so it was necessary to distinguish between persons of the same surname. Koopman states that nicknames are basically of three types: a child's name or pet name given by a mother to a nickname given to a child or an adult by peers, and the shortened form "igama lasheya". Short forms of nicknames are when the full personal name is shortened to declare it as a nickname.

Some of the above nicknames are a direct abbreviation and others are different lexemes ego Dick for Richard. These nicknames are given as extra names - names for house names and school or English names although naming has undergone considerable changes in the Shangase tribe since the arrival of the missionaries. Koopman also states that shortened forms of personal names are used as forms of address by family members in general, of the person named.

It is also important to note that the shortened forms of personal names in some cases depend very much on this high and low tonal character of the penultimate and last syllables, ego uSithoko and uSithoko, and the difference is tonal.

THE PLACE NAMES

The English maiden name Margaret ·can be shortened to Marge or Greta, while Elizabeth can become Eliza (Lizzie) and Beth (Betty). The African name Stefanus can be changed to Fanie and Jacobus to Jaap or Kobu. In the Zulu language, a girl's name uSithokozile can become uSithoko and uZile, and a boy's name uVusimuzi can become uVusi (Vu) and uMuzi (Mzi).

The homestead is given names so that each can be distinguished from the others, and clan names were not enough to identify families of the same clan. Osuthu : - This was Vumizitha's royal homestead where Mkheshane (Shangase) and Ngcobo grew up until they each took over chieftaincy from their father Vumizitha. 34;Ingqungqul'eshay' amaphiko, omuz komuz' Osuthu, (the BataIeur eagle that . swept the wings over oSuthu).

Oyaya:- This was Mshiyane's Royal Homestead and it was named after the hill called Oyaya. But Ntaka was brought back to eMahashini to guard the Royal Homestead after Inkosi Mnguni II passed away. The name was given after Macebo's bravery to take up chieftaincy despite the fact that Honelea tried to usurp Macebo's throne.
