My Dear Little Cousins,

To-morrow \\ill Le the f-iftee1 th da) ot the month of She\ at, which i the .fifth month of the Jcwi h year. It is called Rosh Hashona L'illonoth-"the New Year for Trees," an cl marl·s the opening of the pring season in Eretz Israel. This festival has a particular charm, and shows how deeply attached the Jewish people are to their ancient homeland. To-day in Eretz Israel it has become the occasion for plant- ing trees and is known as the Jewish Arbour Day (Arbor is the Latin v.ord for tree).

The children in particular love the 15th of Shevat. They have a holiday from lessons and march out in processions in order to plant saplings "hich grow into large trees, which provide delightful shade from the sun. All o\er the country the children look forward to the 15th hernt;

here is a desniption of this <la) m the colony of Dagania.

HThe children started coming befo1e the fir.:t ~hafts of the sun heralded daybreak.

Some came on foot, many rode in on horse- back; other drove through in wagons, and all were led hy melodious choirs and

inging.

"Eight hundred children came. Upon a lral't o land adjacent lo the Pi\ er Jordan four hundred . a pl inµ~ had lwcn prcµared for plantillg. 'I'\\ o <'Ii ildn n to0<l h •ach apli11g. It \\U a brilliant da,, ouP of

earth, co ered children.

The eye could not see the as it \\as with trees and

··A fragment of conversation among tv. o l"hildren reached me as they bent at their task

·•' ext year, \\hen I come again, I shall come at once to see how my tree is grow- ing . . . . "

Outside of Palestine the Jews celebrate the 15th of She\ at by eating fruits which are known to grow in Palestine, such as oranges, grapes, almonds, figs and dates. A practical way of celebrating the day is to make contributions to the Jewish National Fund, and e pedall y to the branch known as the Tree Fund. Even if \\ e cannot all be in Eretz Israel to plant trees with our own hands, we can still help to plant groves and forests there by giving money for the planting of trees. I am sure you would all loYe to feel that you have helped to plant at least one tree in Eretz Israel.

Children's Fancy Dress.

1 hope you \\ill all be at the Children's Fancy Dress on Sunda) morning in the Zionist Hall, to cdeLrate the 15th of Shevat.

I am sure there "'ill he many lovely cos- tumes, and the judges "'ill ha\e a difficult time deciding who are to get the prizes.

There is still time for tho e \\ho have not yet got their costumes, lo do so.
