Book Review.

.. rl1HE SC .. \PEUOAT OF HIS'l' I Abr. H. Jonk r.

"The Jew has come to ;ouih Africa long before any Hollauder, .Frenchman, English- man or Cterman," is a stntem nt of fact macle by Mr. Jonker in his book "The Scapegoat of History," now publi heel in an EngliRh translation by the Central News Agency. The author bas set £or himself n difficult problem-to trace the intrinsic q uulities of the .Jew as a citizen and an incli-ddual and to analyse the reactions of the gentile world towards him. Mr. Jonker with u fnmlmess thnt is characte1·isti · oC the irue Afrikaner proves that the Jew iH neither nltog tber bad nor wholly m1geliC', Lnt . imply humun, reacting to environ- 1nent in nrnC'h Urn sume way as non-J cwN (lo.

The analysis of the ,Jews in South Africa is of e~pecinl interest. The author show.

ho\\. J cw and Afrikaner have . trugg1ed alike in the clevelopment of South Africa ngricultmally, industrially and cult lrally.

Thev shared the toil and tribulations o.£

iho~e early pioneer clays and lived together as good and understanding friends. If such friendship has been strained in recent days, it is due olely to the influence of , nbver"i \'e foreign propaganda.

The author bas a double solution to the Jewish problem. When Israel shall be r - habilitatecl in her own homeland then the world at large will gain in respect for her . .'..\foreover if civilisntion will triumph then there must be a sobering clown of humanity and the scapegoat will no longer be found necessary.

l\Ir. Jonker hn given us a volume that is of interest to Jew and non-Jew alike.

The book is filled with an abundance of knowledge and profound psychological in- sight. It is a study to be indulged in by nll South African citizens who have the goodwill to live peaceably together, giving of their best to thefr country.

In his "Foreword," Profes or T. J.

Haarhoff obsene : "Mr. Jonker's aple and thorough book should help to dispel the mists of ignorance and prejudice thnt party politics, infected with Nazi doctrines, hav generater1."
