ABERDEEN.

The first social under the auspice of the local Zionist Society, was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. S. Sass on Sunday, the 14th ult., Mr. Gruss, after opening. the meeting, delivered a short address on Zionism. Rev. Rubm also spoke.

Refreshments were then served and an enjoyable evening was spent. As a re!"lult of this function the sum of £1 5s. 3d. was raised.

BETHLEHEM.

The Bris M,ilah of the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. S.

Shein took place on Tuesday, the 23l·d ult., Rev. M. Altshuler officiating as Mohel. Mr. H. Goldberg, the President of t~e

Hebrew Congregation acted as Sandik and Mr. and Mrs. Resmk acted as Kiiaters. Thanks to Mr. H. Cohen the sum of £6 was collected for the S.A. ,Jewish Orphanage at this function.

BURG ERSDORP.

'l'he following account of the second Zionist Ball, which was held on June 1st. is extracted with acknowledgments from the Queenstown Daily Representative. It may be added that a nett profit of £40 was realised, £30 of which has been fo1·warded to the South African Zionist Federation and £10 to t\w Capr·

Jewish Orphanage:-

" The secon<l Zioni. t Ball to be held in Burghersdorp took place on Monday, the 1Rt June, in the '£own H.all. Without ex- ception it wa. the moRt successful event durmg the pas~ two year and all credit iR due to the willing band of orgamsers.

•rhe l~all was decorated as never before. The Shield of Davi<l was prominent above the stage, while in each corner of the hall beautiful illuminated Chinese decorations showed up to advan- tage. The Zionist colour. in the form of streamers above the happy throng toned with lanterns and balloons compl~ted a magnificent sight. The Molteno Orchestra, as usual. was m fin form, and set the care-free dancers moving shortly after 8 p.rn.

Practically every neighbouring town was fully represented, which testifies to the popularity of this hall. F1om the word 'go ' approximately a hundred couples waltz d and two-·tepped, etc., nntil the early hours of Tuesday morning. Thus the public hol_i- day in i·ecognition of the Union's 21 t birthday wa. celebrated m true South Africa style, with Jew and Gentile mingling in the be t spiTit. Mr. and Mrs. Breger, who acted as host and hostess, and Mess1·s. J,ouw, Sonny Breger. and Barney Weintroub aR M.C.'s, ably carried out their duties. Our Jewish friends are lo be heartily congratulated on their brilliant effort, and we lrust a deserving cause has sub. tantially benefited. This year'R Zionist Ball will long be remembered by all those who werP present. It was a glorious ending to an exrellent day's sport."

A pleasant function 1..ook place at the Synagogue Hall on Saturday, the 20th ult., the occasion bLing the Silver Wedding of Mr. and MTS. S. Lifschitz both of whom are active worker in Zionist and communal affairs here. Mr. Lifschitz i · an ex- President of the Zionist Society and a member of the present Committee, and Mrs. Lifschitz is the Vice-President of the local Branch of the Women's Zionist League.

Mr. 0. Shoob presided and appropriate toa:.;ts and speeches were delivered by Rev. Whyscheik, Mrs. Margolius, and Mes. rs.

On Sunday, the 2lsl ulL, at the Memorial Hoad, Syua·

gogue, Queenie, daughter of fr. and l\lr .. I. Shapiro, of Rea- consfiel<l, was married to Hayman, on of Mr. ancl Mr . J. . Levy of Port Elizabeth, formerly of Aliwal North. The. R v.

M.. Konviser officiated, assisted by Cantor Rudy. The 11.nte1·/1tll?'ers were the parents of the bride and brid0groom.

The bridesmaids were the Mi ses Rose, Dora and Bes Shapiro (sisters of the bride) and Miss Ethel Levy (sister of the bridegroom). They were attended by Dr. Victor Seagull and Mr. Ben Sherman, both of Port Elizabeth. The Canopy- holders were Dr. A. Chanock (Bloemfontein), Mes rs. Louis and

Ha1·old Levisohn and Jack Gorohovsky. Mr. W. Shapiro (brother of the bride) acted as best-man. About 250 guests attended the rec ption helrl at the Gardner Williams Hall, Beaconsfield.

Among the numerous handsome gifts was a silver Kiddush Cup, from the Daughters of Zion Society, Port Elizabeth, of which the bride has been Secretary and Treasurer, and a dessert service from the President and Committee of the Kim·

berley Zionist Society of which the bride had been Secretary for several years prior to her departure for Port Elizabeth.

Hundreds of congratulatory telegrams were 1·eceived from fl'ieuds all over the Union.

Milwictsky, which took place at Middelburg on June 14th at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. L. Brozin, grandparents of the Barmitzvah, the sum of £4 was collected in aid of the South African Jewish Orphanage, which that Institution has received per Mrs. R. Brozin, Hon. Secretary of the local branch.

At the annual general meeting of the local Herzl Zionist Society, held on the 7th ult., the following officers and Com- mittee were elected:-

PORT ELIZABETH.

There was a large gathering of member and friends at the musical evening held at the Loubser Hall on SatuTday, the 13th ult., under the auspices of the Daughters of Zion Society.

An enjoyable programme was arranged, the evening· open- ing with a trio, delightfully played by Miss R. Elion, Miss E.

Levy and Mr. M. Levy. This was followed by an interesting paper on Schubert by Miss Kate Rubin, who illustrated some- of the composer's pieces by very fine gramophone records, Miss Zelda Hurwitz also contributing with Schubert s Serenade.

Recitations were rendered by Miss Nora Miller and Miss E.

Robinsky and a vocal duet was contributed by Miss Z. Hurwitz and Mrs. M. Cimbelman. Miss Redhouse rendered a violin solo and the Misses Len Weinronk and Kate Rubin played a piano duet.

At the conclusion, the President, Miss Weinronk, appealed to all the members to attend the literary venings which arC' being held every second Tuesday evening.

PRETORIA.

was proposed by the Chairman.

On thP 18th ult., Mr. P. Comfeld, of Johannesburg, cl - livered a lecture in the Library of the Memorial Hall, under lhe au8pices of th• above Society. The subject of his lecture was " The Haskala Movement," and there was a larg·e and ap-

pr ciative audi nee. In fluent Hebrew, the l ctu1·er gave an eloquent address on the various move1 ents of thP Haskala which w re rai ed in different countries of Europe. He dealt with the causes of its inauguration and of' thr people who took part in the- movement.

Mr. Silber proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Corn- feld for his address.

QUEENSTOWN.

Under the au ·pices of the Sons of Zion Society a Study Group has been form€d and the meeting·s have proved to be most successful.

Several members were fo1tunate enough to participate in the Kingwilliamstown Young Israel Inter-function, and wish to thank their hosts for a most enjoyable time.

Mr. Mierowsky, in his capacity as Inspector of Hebrew Education, visited Witbank on Monday, the 15th ult. The local Zionist Society entertained Mr. Mierowsky at a social held in the evening at the thlone Hotel, which wa. ftlled to eapacity, on which occasion Mr. Miel'owsky delivered an instructive:-- an<l in. piring addrr s. He lamented the fact that littl attentio11 is paid in this country by parents to ihe Jewish education of their children. Numerous questions were put to the spes.ker, which were replied to ably and convincingly. A vote of thanks was accorded to the speaker by Mr. P. Froman, the Chairman of the Society, who presided.

During the evening some of the pupils of Rev. Rosenberg Tecited in Hebrew and Yiddish and songs were rendered by Rev.

and Mrs. Rosenberg and Miss S. Becker.

WORCESTER.

A successful inter-function was held at Worcester on the 6th and 7th ult., in whkh the following participated: The Judean Central Council Executive, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Malmesbury and Robertson Young Israel Societies. On Saturday night

a social and propaganda meeting was held. The Chairman (Mr. S. Heller) welcomed the delegates and the speakers of the evening were Messrs. M. Horwitz, S. Cohen, and H. Zucker·

man.

The first session of the Judean Parliament was opened on Sunday morning, 7th ult., by Mr. J. E. Krige, J.P., M.P.C.

'I'he parties participating were the General Zionists, led by Mr.

M. Rabinowitz; the Revisionists, led by Mr. Herzl Zuckerman;

the Mizrachi, led by Mr. E. Levinsohn; and the Labourites, led by Mr. J. Leader. ParHament sat all day and the Govern- ment (the General Zionists) introduced three Bills: (1) The Supplementary Budget. After the Bills had been introduced heated discussions ensued. Before the House adjourned a motion of no confidence in the General Zionists was introduced by Mr.

Herzl Zuckerman. The motion was carried by a small majority and the Government was overthrown. Thus making the first Judean Parliament a great success.
