THE ZIONIST RECORD. November 6,

A Mizrachi Organisation Formed in Capetown.

(From Out· apetown Conespondent.)

Last week we stated that · a Mizrachi Organisation had been formed in Capetown. \Ve are now able to publish the names of the members of the committee. They are as follows:

Hon. President, Rabbi M. Ch. Mirvish; President, Mr. M. Gur- land; Vice-Presidents, Messrs. H. Sandler, O. Basson, I. Shuel;

Treasurer, Mr. M. Peires; Joint Hon. Secrntaries, Messrs. B.

Chideckel, M. Aronson; Committee Members, Messrs. S. Bloch, S. Bernhardt, A. Kaufman, I. Sonnenscher, A. Katz, L. Sacks, N. Dorogov, J. Pasvolsky and D. Kalverisl;

The first meeting of the Organisation took place in the Zionist Hall on Sunday morning last. Mr. M. Gurland pre-

·idecl and opened the meeting with a short speech in Hebrew.

R v. A. P. Bender expressed his great sympatny with the cau e to which Raobi Berlin had dedicated his life. He himself, he said, was a Zionist who md not belong to any particular organisation, but he welcomed the Mizrachi movement. He hea1·tily believed that religion . hould permeate Jewish life,

specially in Palestine.

We had to give of our help to the Zionist movement to-day in ev ry possible manner. Vve could not turn back now If we walked onward, trusting in providential guidance, we would reach our goal.

Rabbi M. Ch. Mirvi h explained that the term "spiritual centre" harl not been originated by Achad Ha'am but by the Mizrachi. He proceeded to retail the history of the Mizrachi movement, pointing out that its aim was to create of Eretz Is1·ael a centre from which would radiate to the ends of the earth the pirit and teaching of th prophets of the Torah.

Rabbi I. M. G rvis said that a new page in the history of South African Jewry had been written since Raboi Berlin's arrival in this country. Rabbi Berlin had eX})lained clearly what was the aim of th Mizrachi movement, and it was left for J w1 y h re to put the principles of it into practice.

Rabbi Berlin next delivered an address. The Mizrachi movem nt, he saicl, was not a new thing, but it had been given lh appearanc of something new in thi country and every new undertaking, \'en if it was only s emingly new, had to tak note of two thing . The first was, that the stronger a mov m nt was, and th mor earne t and enthusiastic its mem- ber-, the morn likely wa. it to attract others. Th i:. cone! was, that an atmosph re had to b created around U1e mov ment a·

would make it a factor with whi h to be reckon d. Th• Mizrachi had to hold th ir h 'ads up high had to become a force. The l\lizrachi Organisation in apet~wn had to have leader who '':' r nthu~iastic and ncrg tic to repr ent the r ligiou c- llon of the community.

A certain amount of opposition had been rai e<l to the move- ment, but it was without foundation. It had be n said that relig·ion barred l rogres , that the Mizrachi were fighting a lost cause as had been shown in the case of other nations. But only those who knew nothing· of Jewish religion ancl Torah offered such grounds for opposition. In any case, the Jews could not b corr,!)ared to other peopl s and so the analogy did not hold.

It had ~lso bee~. said that re~igion was too holy a thing to I;>c dragged mto pobtic . But, said the speak r, it was because it was o holy that the Mizrachi wanted to proclaim it to the world. They want d the Jewish Torah to be given life and Jewish life to be Tomlulik.

The creation of Eretz Israel as a sniritual centre was of first importance. But thi was imuossible without the actual po . ession of Eretz Israel. And so -together with the spiritual revival _had to go the more concrete work on behalf of Palestine.

The _M1zrachi had to nro~i~e more souls to bea1 the spirit of

!uda1 m, to. make ihe spiritual centre possible. They had to increase their work on behalf of the Keren Hayesod and Keren Kayemeth.
