a b s t r a c t

The effect of increasing vanadium carbide (VC) content on the corrosion behaviour of tungsten carbide – 10 24 wt% cobalt hardmetals was investigated in1 Mhydrochloric (HCl), and sulphuric (H2SO4) acids solutions. 25 Increasing VC content makes the open circuit potential (OCP) in the test solutions more negative than the 26 base alloy. Specimens exhibitedpseudo passivationin all the test solutions. Increasing VC led to decreasing 27 corrosion current density. However, the corrosion current densities during chronoamperometric tests 28 were lower for 0 wt% VC. XRD and Raman spectroscopy showed that hydrated WO3formed in the surface 29 films of all specimens in hydrochloric acid (HCl), while hydrated vanadyl sulphate also formed for higher 30 VC content specimens in sulphuric acid (H2SO4). 31

35 1. Introduction

36 Tungsten carbides or cemented carbides are composite materi- 37 als consisting of tungsten carbide (WC) grains cemented together 38 by a metallic binder, most commonly cobalt (Co). They are known 39 for their combined high hardness, due to the hard WC phase and 40 working toughness due to the binder. Other carbides are intro- 41 duced in WC-Co to improve specific properties, e.g., processability, 42 mechanical or corrosion properties. For example, vanadium car- 43 bide (VC) is added to prevent WC grain growth during sintering.

44 Also, the addition of VC of grain sizes less than 2

l

m in larger quan- 45 tities of up to 10 wt% has been found to improve hardness without 46 compromising the toughness at a given cobalt content[1].

47 Cemented carbides have applications spanning most engineer- 48 ing fields. However, application in chemically aggressive environ- 49 ments is less successful because they are susceptible to corrosion 50 [2]. The corrosion properties in acidic and neutral electrolytes are 51 controlled by the corrosion resistance of the Co binder[3,4]. The 52 Co binder gets modified by dissolving tungsten (W) and carbon 53 (C) during the sintering process[5]. Such compositional modifica- 54 tion makes it more corrosion resistant. However, the improvement 55 is only minimal[6,7].

56 One method that has been used to improve the corrosion 57 resistance is the use of corrosion resistant binders, e.g. Ni, Ni-Cr 58 and Ni-Cr-Mo[8,9]. However, such binders can lead to a significant

corrosion of the WC grains[10]. The other method has been the 59 addition of other carbide phases. The corrosion resistance is im- 60 proved by the introduction of chromium carbide[11]. On the other 61 hand, small amounts of TiC and TaC appear to have no influence on 62 corrosion resistance of WC-Co while higher amounts decrease cur- 63 rent density[12]. Small amounts of VC also do not appear to influ- 64 ence the corrosion resistance[7]. However, it has been reported 65 [13]that a substitution of WC by 10 wt% VC inWC-Cohardmetals 66 improves corrosion resistance in sulphuric acid. The effect of high- 67 er amounts of VC on the corrosion resistance has not been reported 68 before neither has been results from other electrolytes. This paper 69 presents results of an investigation of the effect of increasing VC 70 content on the corrosion properties of WC-Co in sulphuric 71 (H2SO4) and hydrochloric (HCl) acids at constant Co weight percent 72 content. 73

2. Experimental work 74

2.1. Materials 75

The nominal compositions, in weight percent, of the samples 76 investigated are given inTable 1. The VC content was varied from 77 0 to 27 wt%. Specimen 1 with 0 wt% VC is the base alloy against 78 which the other alloys are compared to. The intention was to have 79 specimens of equal weight percent Co but this was not possible. It 80 is however expected that the small variation in Co content will not 81 influence results appreciably. The microstructures of the 82 specimens, obtained using a JEOL JSM 6510 Scanning Electron 83

84 Microscope (SEM) operated in the back scatter electron (BSE) mode 85 are given inFig. 1. Specimens 1 and 2 (hence forth WC-10Co and 86 WC-0.4VC-10Co, respectively) have the well known double phase 87 microstructure of WC (bright phase) and Co (dark phase). The Co 88 appears as small dark regions cementing the carbide grains to- 89 gether. Specimens 3 and 4 (hence forth WC-10VC-12Co and WC- 90 27VC-11Co., respectively) have a triple phase microstructure of 91 WC, Co and (W,V)C. The (W,V)C grains appear to have the same 92 gray level contrast with the Co binder, but are differentiated by 93 their larger, either spherical or irregular shapes. Both types of 94 microstructures are expected [14]. The VC in specimens WC- 95 10VC-12Co and WC-27VC-11Co occurs as the double carbide 96 (W,V)C because WC dissolves in VC [5]. The occurrence of these 97 phases was confirmed by XRD studies(Fig. 6). The introduction 98 of 0.4 wt% VC, as expected[15], led to a refinement of WC grain 99 size (Fig. 1b)

100 2.2. Corrosion experiments

101 The electrolytes used in the corrosion experiments were1 M 102 H2SO4and1 MHCl, and were prepared from reagent grade chem- 103 icals and distilled water. These solutions are not the environments 104 in which the materials investigated are usually applied in. Their

use here is, in keeping with other researchers (Cf.Refs.[3,4,6,7]), 105 primarily for comparison purposes. WC-based hardmetals are usu- 106 ally applied in neutral and near-neutral aqueous working environ- 107 ments[8]. 108

Corrosion experiments were performed on metallographically 109 prepared surfaces. Test samples were polished to a 1

l

m surface 110 finish using diamond spray and diamond extender (lubricant) after 111 grinding on Struers, Aka-Piatto, of grades 80, 120, 220, 600, and 112 1200. The samples were attached to insulating copper wires on 113 one face with an aluminium conductive sticker tape. This was fol- 114 lowed by cold mounting using epoxy resin and a catalyst in the 115 sample moulds. 116

Three types of experiments were performed. Immediately upon 117 immersion of the samples in the electrolytes, the open circuit po- 118 tential (OCP) was monitored for two hours. This was followed by 119 potentiodynamic anodic polarisation measurements. Lastly, in or- 120 der to investigate whether corrosion products formed on the sam- 121 ple surfaces, chronoamperometric measurements were done for 122 eight hours using a potential selected from the anodic polarisation 123 curve. The anodic polarisation and chronoamperometric tests were 124 carried out on the same surface and in the same test solution. All 125 tests were done at room temperature using electrolytes that were 126 not de-aerated during testing. Before the experiments were 127 started, the reproducibility of corrosion behaviour was determined 128 by running two potentiodynamic anodic polarisation scans. 129

The anodic polarization tests were carried out in a cell consist- 130 ing of three electrodes with the test specimen as the working elec- 131 trode, a graphite rod as the counter electrode (CE) and a silver/ 132 silver chloride electrode (SSE) (Saturated KCl) as the reference elec- 133 trode. The exposed areas of the working electrode were 0.636 cm2 134 for WC-10VC and WC-0.4VC-10Co and 0.525 cm2and 1.13 cm2for 135 WC-10VC-12Co and WC-27VC-11Co specimens. 138 are deemed less important because the per unit area currents were 139 to be quoted. The reference electrode was connected to the cell via 140 a Luggin probe capillary. All the potentials reported were versus 141 the silver-silver chloride standard electrode (SSE) (Saturated KCl).

142 The tests were done using an Autolab potentiostat/galvanostat 143 connected to a personal computer with a General Purpose Electro- 144 chemical System (GPES) software. Potential was varied from 145 600mV to +1200 mV at a scan rate of 2 mV/s for all the samples.

146 This scan rate is typical of those used in literature even though 147 higher scan rates of 5 mV/s[4]and 50 mV/s[21] have been re- 148 ported. The scan rate used is not important since the scan rate does 149 not affect the qualitative value of the results[6,21]. The corrosion 150 potential (Ecorr), and corrosion current density (icorr) for each sam- 151 ple were obtained from the polarization curves according to ASTM 152 standard G5-94. As already stated, all the corrosion experiments 153 were performed after the reproducibility of the potentiodynamic 154 behaviour was determined through repeat runs on repolished test 155 specimens.

156 Samples were characterized for phases before and after corro- 157 sion using a Phillips PW 1710 X-ray diffractometer. Further, after 158 chronoamperometric tests, the samples were cleaned in alcohol 159 and dried and the surfaces analyzed using a Raman microscope 160 spectrometer (Senterra, Bruker Optics) coupled with a Peltier 161 cooled CCD detector. An argon ion laser of wavelength 532 nm 162 was used to generate spectrographs from points on the test surface.

163 3. Results and discussion

164 The corrosion behaviour of all the specimens tested was ex- 165 pected to be reproducible because their potentiodynamic anodic 166 polarization scans were reproducible.Fig. 2, obtained from speci- 167 men WC-10 VC-12Co, shows the characteristic potentiodynamic 168 polarization behaviour. As a result of this reproducibility of corro- 169 sion behaviour, only single scan readings will be provided for all 170 the tests.

3.1. Open circuit potential (OCP) 171

Fig. 3shows the variation of the OCP of the specimens in HCl 172 and H2SO4 solutions. The curves in both solutions are smooth, 173 implying no specimen was susceptible to pitting. The OCP values 174 in HCl decreased within the first hour, implying some corrosion, 175 of maybe a layer of oxide that had formed on the surfaces in air. 176 The OCP values rose slightly on longer immersion, indicating that 177 all the specimens became nobler with time. Increasing VC content 178 made the OCP values in HCl nobler than for the base alloy. How- 179 ever, very high additions made the OCP more negative and speci- 180 men WC-27VC-11Co was the least noble. In H2SO4, the OCP 181 values were relatively constant throughout the two hours of expo- 182 sure (Fig. 3b).The introduction of VC produced specimens less no- 183 ble than the base alloy, with increasing VC shifting OCP values to 184 increasingly more negative values. 185

3.2. Potentiodynamic polarisation measurements 186

The potentiodynamic polarisation curves of the samples in HCl 187 are given in Fig. 4a. All the samples exhibited a pseudopassive 188 behaviour marked by a small decrease in the current density at 189 higher potentials. The anodic Tafel constants for the samples with 190 10VC and 27VC were constant throughout the test. The anodic Ta- 191 fel constant for the alloy with 0.4VC was highest initially before 192 decreasing to be equal to that of the 10VC and 27VC samples. On 193 the other hand, the anodic Tafel constant for the base alloy was ini- 194 tially equal to that of the 10VC and 27VC samples but suddenly in- 195 creased at about 0V. This variation of Tafel constant for the base 196 alloy is unlike the case when1 N HCl is used [6]. The onset of 197 pseudopassive behaviour was earlier for the VC-containing sam- 198 ples, even though the decrease of current density was higher for 199 the base alloy. The pseudo passivation range of the base alloy 200 was small compared to that of the VC-containing samples. The 201 amount of VC did not affect the current density, ipass, in the 202 pseudopassive potential range, and the ipass of the VC samples 203 was higher than for the base alloy. 204

The potentiodynamic polarisation curves of the samples in 205 H2SO4are given inFig. 4b.The base alloy WC-10Co and theVC- 206 containing samples all showed pseudo passivation behaviour. 207 The pseudopassivity observed here for the base alloy is in agree- 208 ment with literature[6,13,17]. The ipassfor the VC samples de- 209 creased moving from 0.4VC to 10VC. However, further increase in 210 VC did not affect ipass. Unlike in HCl, the anodic Tafel constants for 211 all the samples were very similar in magnitude. 212

The initial increase of current during anodic polarization in both 213 HCl and H2SO4is attributed to the dissolution of the Co binder, 214 while the increase in current at higher potentials is attributed, 215 for straight WC-Co, to the dissolution of the WC phase[17]. The 216 pseudopassive behaviour observed in both acids is in agreement 217 with literature[6]. The behaviour is termed pseudopassive because 218 the current density decreased only minimally. Acm 2[17]. Thepseudo passiv- 221 ationbehaviour will be explained in latter sections.

222 The corrosion parameters of the various WC-VC-Co hardmetals 223 in HCl and H2SO4 are given in Table 2. As already noted, these 224 parameters were determined following ASTM Standard G5-94. In 225 this standard, the corrosion current density is determined as the 226 intersection of a line drawn through the corrosion potential, Ecorr, 227 and a tangent to the linear region of either the cathodic or anodic 228 sections of the polarization curve in the vicinity of Ecorr. The base 229 alloy, WC-Co, was nobler than theVC-containingalloys in both 230 electrolytes. This observation mirrors that obtained when smaller 231 amounts of VC are involved[11]. The most negative Ecorroccurred 232 in HCl, for alloy WC-0.4VC-10Co. This might have been caused by 233 the higher anodic Tafel constant for this alloy/electrolyte combina- 234 tion. In H2SO4,the Ecorrvalues of the specimens were very similar, 235 probably because of the similarity in the anodic Tafel constants. In 236 general, the Ecorrof the base alloy, WC-Co, in both test solutions is 237 positive to values obtained in literature[4,18]. It is possible that 238 this might have been caused by the difference in the concentra- 239 tions of electrolytes used. The icorrvalues in both HCl and H2SO4 240 decreased with increasing VC content. This was caused by the 241 decreasing volume fraction of the binder with increasing VC con- 242 tent. The icorrvalues are higher in H2SO4than in HCl unlike litera- 243 ture[6]. This observation will be addressed in the sections below.

244 3.3. Chronoamperometry

245 The potentials used for chronoamperometric testing were se- 246 lected from portions of the anodic polarisation curves where the 247 anodic currents were independent of the applied potential. The 248 potentials used in HCl were 0.6 V (SSE) for the WC-VC-Co hardmet- 249 als and 0.85 V (SSE) for the straight WC-Co grade. In H2SO4, the 250 potentials used were 0.5 V (SSE) for WC-10Co and 0.7 V (SSE) for 251 the VC hardmetals.

252 The chronoamperometric behaviour of all the samples was 253 characterized by a decay of current densities to steady state values.

254 The base alloy had the least steady state value in both acids, imply- 255 ing that the introduction of VC was not beneficial. Among the VC 256 alloys, the specimen with 27VC had the least steady state current 257 in HCl while there was no difference in H2SO4 (Fig. 5a and b).

258 The decay in current densities and their stabilization to steady

state values suggests that the samples developed some passivation 259 characteristics, in line with the observations made for the poten- 260 tiodynamic polarization behaviour[19]. 261

No attempt is being made to compare the current densities here 262 to those obtained in the pseudopassive region of the potentiody- 263 namic polarization curves. This is because by their nature, the 264 chronoamperometric testing conditions are expected to be near 265 steady state conditions and the relatively thick double layer that 266 is expected to form would slow down charge flow and lead to a 267 lower current density. On the other hand, the potentiodynamic 268 tests are expected to be characterized by a rapidly changing and 269 smaller double layer and hence a lower resistance to charge follow 270 Fig. 4.Potentiodynamic polarisation curves of the samples in (a) HCl and (b) H2SO4. 271 that would be accompanied by a higher current density. Similar 272 values of current densities can be obtained only if the scan rates 273 for the potentiostatic and potentiodynamic tests were the same 274 [16].

275 3.4. Phases before and after corrosion

276 The XRD patterns of the alloys before corrosion are given in 277 Fig. 6a–d.The phases observed in WC-Co and WC-0.4VC-Co were 278 WC and Co, while (W,V)C also occurred in the 10VC and 27VC sam- 279 ples. No VC peaks were observed in the spectrum of the 0.4VC alloy 280 because the VC content was lower than the detection limit of the 281 XRD. The observation of (W,V)C in the high VC samples here is in 282 agreement with literature[1,13,14,20]. As already mentioned, the 283 (W,V)C forms from the dissolution of WC in VC[5].

Figs. 7a–d and8a–d show the XRD patterns of the alloys after 284 chronoamperometric tests in HCl and H2SO4respectively. In both 285 acids, all the alloys were missing Co peaks that had appeared be- 286 fore corrosion (Fig. 6a–d),implying that the Co had dissolved in 287 the acids. The dissolution of Co observed here is consistent with lit- 288 erature on the corrosion ofWC-basedhardmetals[3,4]. The corro- 289 sion also led to the formation of new peaks. In HCl (Fig. 7a–d),the 290 new peaks on all the XRD spectra were identified as belonging to 291 hydrated tungsten oxide (WO3.H2O) for all the samples. In H2SO4 292 (Fig. 8a–d),the new peaks were identified as belonging to hydrated 293 tungsten oxide (WO3.xH2O, withx= 1,2) for WC-10Co and WC- 294 0.4VC-10Co alloys and to hydrated tungsten oxide (WO3.H2O) 295 and hydrated vanadyl sulphate (VOSO4.H2O) for the WC-10VC- 296 12Co and WC-27VC-11Co. 299 3.5. Ramanspectroscopy

300 The Raman shifts obtained from the surfaces after chronoamp- 301 erometric testing in HCl and H2SO4are shown inFigs. 9 and 10 302 respectively. Several spectrographs were obtained from different 303 points on the same surface and were similar hence only one spec- 304 trograph per specimen has been presented here. All the test spec-

imens had, in both acids, Raman bands (Figs. 9a–d and 10a–d) 305 which were attributed to the monoclinic phase of WO3and the hy- 306 drated tungsten oxide[23–26]. It is known that tungsten oxides 307 form onWC-Coalloys anodically polarized in H2SO4 [21,22]. No 308 wave shifts attributable to VOSO4.H2O were observed for alloys 309 WC-10VC-12Co and WC-27VC-11Co in H2SO4solution. 312 the results of XRD analysis of the corroded surfaces (Figs. 7 and 8).

313 No Co based compounds as reported elsewhere in literature[8,9]

314 were observed in the current study after potentiostatic polariza- 315 tion in either HCl or H2SO4, probably because, as shown by XRD 316 studies (Figs. 7 and 8) no Co was available.

317 The observation of the hydrated WO3 on the surfaces of the 318 samples by both XRD (Figs. 7 and 8) and Raman spectroscopy (Figs.

319 9 and 10) can help explain the pseudopassivity observed during 320 potentiodynamic polarization (Fig. 4), and also during chronoamp- 321 erometric tests (Fig. 5). It can be argued that thepseudo passiv- 322 ation could have been caused by the change of composition of 323 the binder during sintering. Under normal circumstances, pure 324 Co is not passivating. During sintering, W and C go into solution 325 in the Co[5] and the presence of W conferspseudo passivation 326 behaviour to the binder[7]. However, the passivation of the binder 327 cannot explain the observed passivation of the composite WC-Co 328 and WC-VC-Co samples. This is because the XRD patterns of all 329 the specimens after corrosion (Figs. 7 and 8) showed that the entire 330 surface Co binder had dissolved.

331 No VC-based compound was obtained in the surface film of the 332 VC alloys after corrosion in HCl (Figs. 7 and 9). This suggests that 333 VC did not take part in the passivation behaviour of the VC alloys 334 when in HCl. In H2SO4, XRD patterns of VC alloys had peaks for VO- 335 SO4.H2O (Fig. 8) implying that the VC took part in corrosion. This 336 however does not appear to have been beneficial, as was seen from 337 the higher corrosion current densities (Table 2). There were no 338 peaks of VOSO4.H2O on the Raman patterns for the VC alloys and 339 it is probable that the compound is not Raman active.

340 4. Conclusion

341 The electrochemical corrosion behaviour of WC-VC-Co alloys 342 has been investigated with the help of XRD and Raman spectros- 343 copy. The OCP result showed that the samples were not susceptible 344 to pitting corrosion in both1 MHCl and H2SO4. The introduction of 345 VC in WC-Co improved the passivation resistance of the hardmetals 346 in HCl, and at high VC contents resulted in lower corrosion current

densities than for the base alloy in both HCl and H2SO4. All the sam- 347 ples showed pseudopassive behaviour in both HCl and H2SO4due to 348 the formation of a passive film of hydrated WO3No VC-based cor- 349 rosion products were observed after corrosion in HCl. In H2SO4, 350 the compound VOSO4.H2O formed in alloys with high VC contents. 351 However, the formation of VOSO4.H2O appears to have been detri- 352 mental to corrosion resistance since the corrosion current densities 353 recorded in H2SO4where higher than those recorded in HCl. 354
