From the beginning, the company HUNT, LEUCHARS & HEPBURN, Ltd. has been closely associated with the construction industry in South Africa as suppliers of timber. These two Parthenon products were used to create pleasing effects on the exterior of this beautiful building. To compensate for this loss, an additional storey was added to the Church Street block and is clearly defined in height by being set back above the main cornice. On the inside of the vestibule there are two glazed bronze swing doors leading to the lower hall. A short flight of stairs from the lower hall takes one up to the main floor level of the building and into the stair and lift hall.
Offices were usually simply finished with two coats of lime plaster up to the picture rail and cement plaster above. The flooring of the first four floors is made of linoleum in the form of tiles and two.

The wall cladding of these toilets is made of cream-colored %," thick, pre-cast terrazzo slabs that reach the height of the toilet. The base is made of red granite and the first floor of Flatpan bluestone, the same material used to clad the toilets Windows and corner buildings on the second floor The connection between the new block and the general post office is covered on the outside with bluestone up to the sill on the fourth floor and prefabricated concrete blocks above.
The concrete beam to the roadway opening under this connection is covered with bluestone slabs, trimmed with bronze clamps and plugs. Vertical transport takes place by means of two passenger lifts and one freight lift, in addition to the two stairwells.
NEW HARBOUR WORKS
AND IMPROVEMENTS
The latter method was made possible by dismantling the old floating dock and equipping it for the construction of caissons. Expenditure of £12,238 has been approved for the extension of the quay at Island View by 500 feet to provide increased berthing space for oil tankers. The removal of the edge in the Nordmolen at the harbor entrance is another work that the department has been engaged in over the past year.
Perhaps the most interesting activity of the Department is its share in the reclamation of Durban Beach. A flying boat base is provided, complete with hangar, slipways, workshops, etc., under construction. The hangar is built from structural steel, the design of which was prepared in the Railway Drawing Room, and as far as I understand, manufactured in the Railway Workshops.
"Blesbok" is engaged in excavation works related to the construction of the "T" pier and at the same time taking out the spoil on the shore for reclamation of the beach. Considerable areas of land have so far been reclaimed from the sea, and at the present rate of progress, it is anticipated that the reclamation of Durban's foreshore will be an accomplished fact within a measurable space of time. The design of the building can be called the Renaissance of the 17th century, but it is subject to serious significance.
Modeled by Miss Stainbank, of Durban, the two wild animals, representing the spirit of Natal, are guarding the future of the country's traditions of defence, trade and civic development, etc. Above the frame, in the same line and on the raised part of the blocking course, is the Union Coat of Arms, also by the same sculptor. In sharp contrast to the long low lines of the building, a 1 OO ~ foot carillon tower stands sentin~ as in.
Disposal
Johannesburg Municipal Experiments
After screening, the sewage passes through a small detritus chamber where the heavier solids are deposited, and then into updraft type sedimentation tanks. The sludge is then transferred to the sludge collector, from where it is transferred to the sludge metabolism tanks. For this purpose, the waste heat of the gas engine is utilized with a heat exchanger and hot water coils.
Unpleasant air from the settling tanks is drawn from the main building with the help of fans and mixed with a certain amount of highly ozonized air before being released into the atmosphere - odorless. Supernatant liquid from the digestion tanks is returned to the inlet sewer for further treatment. A portion is returned to the aeration tanks to inoculate the incoming sewage, and the remainder is returned to the inlet sewer at the beginning of the settling process.
The wastewater from the settling tanks, which is now clear water and contains small amounts of activated sludge in suspension, is passed over sand filters consisting of six units, each 45 meters long and 15 meters wide. At Klipspruit, the wastewater is piped directly to the land, but in the future it will be subjected to a completely different process. Klipspruit processes sewage from the central part of Johannesburg, and the sewage includes heavier material from slaughterhouses and factories.
However, large filter beds are being built in Klipspruit and eventually part of the effluent from the sedimentation tank will be purified by aerobic action in eight such beds. The filtered and treated sewage from these beds will be delivered to Orlando's new power plant for cooling purposes. It will be several years before the work currently taking place at Klipspruit is completed, but when it is completed, Johannesburg will boast one of the largest and most modern sewage treatment plants in South Africa.
Electric Traction for
Rand and Pretoria Railways
In order that the maximum operational benefit, especially in terms of goods traffic, can be obtained from the electrification of the line between Germiston and Pretoria, and in light of the changes that have been made to the traffic yard at Pretoria West, whereby the latter station is practically the terminus for goods traffic from Johannesburg to Pretoria, last September it was decided to extend the Germiston-Pretoria. The drive from the gearbox to the two conveyor augers is chained with the possibility of adjustment. The mixer just described has a capacity of 10 cubic yards per hour. The mixing element consists of 12 deflector blades, which are screwed to the inside of the drum and adjustable in position.
These larger models operate on the same principle but differ architecturally in that they are provided with separate screws for the stone and sand compartments, a bucket elevator is used to carry the pre-measured material to the mixing drum which is at a suitable height for the mix in unloading jubilee wagons.
