In the case of the Pretoria Zoo, artificial methods of this kind have fortunately not proved necessary. Therefore, the new part of the Zoo includes flat land, a hilly part and a water layer, all of which are indispensable in it. In the history of the National Zoological Gardens there have been no lack of efforts to develop the utility.
With the valuable assistance of the Secretary of Public Works, a floor plan was drawn up for the available thirty acres. An idea of the enormity of the scheme will be obtained by quoting a few figures. At the front of each of the two enclosures the distance across the ditch is 35 feet.
Only indigenous plants such as aloe and mesembryanthema will be planted on the hilltop to maintain a distinctly South African atmosphere. Macdonald, of the Union Public Works Department, describes the part this department has had in planning the Zoo Extension and the construction work being done. His views were to be sought on the habits and mode of life of the various animals to be housed.

The architectural features of the building will merge with the garden layout in front and the majesty of tall trees in the background. The park itself will have a large frontage, which is more suitable for an attractive garden treatment. The main note in the design of this Fire Station is the way in which its dual purpose, taking into account efficiency, coordination of fire fighting and ambulance services, has been handled.
These spaces are placed in such a way that the two services cannot interfere. The ground floor plan shows a strategic control point from which the duty officer behind a soundproof desk has complete control over the entire station. Not only does it face the main entrance, the reception room and the staircase leading to the upper floor, but it has a practically perfect view of both the engine room and the ambulance room, which are located at the extreme ends of the wide curved guardhouse.
From his managerial position, the man on duty at his desk has the control panel that, through a system of. The man on duty is therefore placed in the heart of the station; and not only does he oversee all activities, but he can also provoke immediate action from the right angle, a definite advantage in a service where every second is precious. The floor plan of the ground floor shows the layout of the offices and compartments for various purposes.
The first floor contains a recreation room, a mess room and a reading room, as well as rooms for single men. The yard itself, totally enclosed, will be paved and drained into a collection pit for pumping drills. To the east of the Station, but on the same island, barracks for the officers of the Brigade will be erected.
The attractive environment and adjacent sports facilities make this station an ideal station for men to reside.
