AN OUTSTANDING zoo

The National Pretoria ~

Zoological Gardens, History and Recent

New Extensions

In the case of the Pretoria Zoo, artificial methods of this kind have fortunately not proved necessary. Therefore, the new part of the Zoo includes flat land, a hilly part and a water layer, all of which are indispensable in it. In the history of the National Zoological Gardens there have been no lack of efforts to develop the utility.

With the valuable assistance of the Secretary of Public Works, a floor plan was drawn up for the available thirty acres. An idea of the enormity of the scheme will be obtained by quoting a few figures. At the front of each of the two enclosures the distance across the ditch is 35 feet.

Only indigenous plants such as aloe and mesembryanthema will be planted on the hilltop to maintain a distinctly South African atmosphere. Macdonald, of the Union Public Works Department, describes the part this department has had in planning the Zoo Extension and the construction work being done. His views were to be sought on the habits and mode of life of the various animals to be housed.

The dens have been built at the back, along with a feeding and service alley for use by the keepers. The front walls of the caves are made of stone with openings leading into the camps. The interior is cut off from the service corridor by wrought iron grilles, except in the case of the maternity dens on the Aapies River.

Fisher, from Regents Park Zoo, and found that they were placed in a similar position. The surface of the camps has not been disturbed, except when water pits have been created for swimming pools.

DURBAN'S NEW FLYING-BOAT HANGARS·

Between these pipes there will be two intermediate bars, to which special woven wire netting of a rectangular pattern will be attached.

Kruger sdorp Fire

Station

New Fire Station for Krugersdorp

A WELL-PLANNED BUILDING DESIGNED TO FACILITATE EFFICIENT SERVICE

The architectural features of the building will merge with the garden layout in front and the majesty of tall trees in the background. The park itself will have a large frontage, which is more suitable for an attractive garden treatment. The main note in the design of this Fire Station is the way in which its dual purpose, taking into account efficiency, coordination of fire fighting and ambulance services, has been handled.

These spaces are placed in such a way that the two services cannot interfere. The ground floor plan shows a strategic control point from which the duty officer behind a soundproof desk has complete control over the entire station. Not only does it face the main entrance, the reception room and the staircase leading to the upper floor, but it has a practically perfect view of both the engine room and the ambulance room, which are located at the extreme ends of the wide curved guardhouse.

From his managerial position, the man on duty at his desk has the control panel that, through a system of. The man on duty is therefore placed in the heart of the station; and not only does he oversee all activities, but he can also provoke immediate action from the right angle, a definite advantage in a service where every second is precious. The floor plan of the ground floor shows the layout of the offices and compartments for various purposes.

The first floor contains a recreation room, a mess room and a reading room, as well as rooms for single men. The yard itself, totally enclosed, will be paved and drained into a collection pit for pumping drills. To the east of the Station, but on the same island, barracks for the officers of the Brigade will be erected.

The attractive environment and adjacent sports facilities make this station an ideal station for men to reside.

Modern Concrete

Engineering

Expanding Uses of Reinforced Concrete~

Concrete by Strength

PUBLIC WORKS OF SOUTH AFRICA. . larger contractors, who on their own initiative and in cooperation with the engineers tried the field control methods in their work, comparing the result and the cost obtained with those of the old methods. The results were so satisfactory that the use of control methods is rapidly expanding, and for important overseas enterprises this method is now universal practice. One of the main factors, also, in the adoption of concrete specification by the resistance method from.

Strange to say, this has been one of the strongest arguments against the use of concrete for construction purposes in cities. However, modern machines can be purchased for cutting the various parts of the concrete structure so that the position is not as black as it is painted. A view of Wembley: Ice Rink, Johannesburg, turers taken at the last factories exist during construction.

CVVith with thanks to the S.A. Institute of Engmeers.) developed in America and on the Continent for years, and the steady increase of quick-setting cement obtained in 24 to 36 hours in the number of these factories is a certain indication of the strength obtained by ordinary cement within 28 days. Cement and many other benefits it offers, it provides an extra that is the smallest part of the total protection for all parties involved in any gate, is the only material that involves transportation. This modern trend in concrete production and processing has as one of the main reasons the improved methods of cement production, which have raised the quality standard and safety factor in concrete construction to a level unknown until recent years.

Most of the cement factories in the Union have been built in the last few years or modernized; and today, with an annual production of about 1,000,000 tons of cement, they are able to meet the demand of the Union. The high standard of the product is further guaranteed by the fact that its manufacture is controlled by highly efficient employees. For the benefit of the lay reader, it would be helpful to elaborate on a few of the benefits of concrete construction.

Its one major advantage is that it requires no maintenance such as painting or renewals due to the. Once a Continental motor truck is equipped with a rotating drum, which is used to transport ready-mixed concrete from factory to construction site.
