National and International Undergraduate marketing: 2008

he marketing committee antici- pa ted a dif fi cult year, because the Na tional De part ment of Edu cation has set new ad mis sion re quire ments for degree stu dies in higher edu ca tion for 2009. In ad- dition, the admission require ments for the pro gram mes in the Faculty of Law were also set higher. Ex ter nal factors also con tri buted to the chal lenges that had to be over come in 2008.However, the faculty being one of excel lence, along with a repu tation that has been estab lished over the last century, allowed us to rise above these obstacles. We have received a record number of applications for 2009,
which proves that the above mentioned facts outweigh all the negative aspects.
The marketing for 2008 com menced with a tour of Namibia, which was fol lowed by career exhibi tions, school visits and road shows through out South Africa. The faculty was also re pre sented at the Uni- ver si ty’s Open Day. The marketing com- mittee’s main goal is to provide potential stu dents with in for mation regarding the faculty, the various quali fi ca tions and the admis sion require ments. This is done through per sonal interaction on a one-on- one basis.
During the first semester we introduced the “Brand Ambassador”-concept which
proved to be hugely successful. Mr James Faber was accompanied by ms Leana Coetzee who was appointed
“Brand Ambassador” of the Faculty of Law. The fact that ms Coetzee con- tinued doing marketing through out the second se mester certainly contri- buted to the higher application rate for 2009.
The marketing strategies for the future include the design of new market- ing mate rial to carry out the market- ing duties of the Faculty to an even greater extent.
