Pada perawatan ortodonti, resorpsi akar yang terjadi umumnya adalah resorpsi akar eksternal. Resorpsi akar eksternal terjadi hampir pada setiap pasien yang dirawat ortodonti. Pada tingkat keparahan tertentu, resorpsi menyebabkan kerugian pada pasien. Maka sebelum melakukan perawatan ortodonti, seorang dokter gigi harus mengetahui mekanisme, faktor predisposisi, dan cara pananganan resorpsi.

Foto radiografi diambil secara berkala selama perawatan berguna untuk mendeteksi terjadinya resorpsi, sehingga dapat dilakukan tindakan pencegahan. Apabila resorpsi terlihat selama perawatan, maka pergerakkan pada gigi yang mengalami resorpsi harus dihentikan sampai gigi tersebut mengalami pemulihan.

Inflamasi karena perawatan ortodonti yang kurang baik juga memicu terjadinya resorpsi akar. Bila terlihat gejala inflamasi pada pasien, maka dokter gigi dapat meresepkan obat anti inflamasi sebagai pencegahan terhadap resorpsi akar.

Namun apabila resorpsi tidak dapat berhenti, perawatan yang dilakukan adalah perawatan endodonti karena resorpsi tidak terjadi pada gigi non vital. Perawatan terbaru untuk memperbaiki resorpsi akar adalah dengan menggunakan LIPUS. LIPUS berfungsi memicu pembentukan fibroblas dan memperbaiki jaringan gigi serta sebagai anti inflamasi.
