The Library

The Flinders Un1vers1ty Library consists of a Central Library and three branch hbranes - the Law L1braiy, Sturt Library and Med!cal Library The Central hbrary 1s situated on the plaza of the southern campus, housing the Law L1bracy on the top floor the Sturt Library is on the northern (Sturt) campus and the Medical Library 1s on the 5th level of the Flinders MedJcal Centre

The library system contains about 994,000 books and penod1cals on all sub1ects related to the teaching and research interests of the un1vers1ty staff and students

Central Library - The Central Library IS the largest of the four hbranes1 and has matenals to serve the whole un1vers1ty community

The Law Library

The Law Ltbrary is a separate collecbon of legislation, legal texts, law reports and penodtcals with its own reference and reserve collections as well as CD ROM workstabons

The Sturt Library -The Sturt L1bracy spec1ahses 1n the fields of nursmg and educabon and has a note worthy collecbon of teaclung resources

Medical Library

The Medical Library serves both Flinders Un1vers1ty students and Flinders MedJ.cal Centre staff

The /ontt Library Store - While not strictly a branch of the L1bracy the Store holds an mcreas1ng amount of the Library collection It 1s a Joint venture with the Un1vers1ty of Adelaide, and contains books and penod1cals that are 1n lesser demand

The Science Collection -Thts ts a small worklng collecbon of research penod1cals and monographs located 1n the School of Physical Sciences There are extensive reading areas 1n all the ltbranes, and each hbracy offers borrowtng f.ac1hbes to any student or staff member of the un1vers1ty Each bbracy also offers a comprehensive range of CD ROM databases and free Internet access through ded!cated ternunals

The 'Investigator onhne catalogue provi.des detatls of all books, penochcals and other matenals held by each ltbrary The 'Investigator' also offers access to other South Austrahan Un1vers1ty Library catalogues as well as some onhne databases It is also avru.lable vi.a dJ.al up access, and through the Library's WWW pages

Facthbes are provided for the use of microfilm and audio visual materials in each library, while microcomputers and photocopiers are also available for student use Charges apply for copies and laser pnnts

Students and staff requ1nng matenals not avatlable on campus may take advantage of the Central Sturt or Mechcal document delivery semce This service can deliver photocopied or loaned items from around the world, with vatylng charges The photograpluc semce IS part of the Multi Med!a unit 1n the Central Library and operates on a commercial basts Colour photocopies and overhead transparences may be ordered from the photographic semce and the staff here also act as the photographers for the uruvers1ty

Tours of the hbrar1es are arranged during Onentabon Week and tram1ng sessions are held 1n the use of the Investigator and CD RO Ms

A wide vanety of sport and recreational oppor tun1bes are avallable to students and staff at the un1vers1ty The use of facxhhes and the co orchnat:Lon of all activities 1n this field are under the general superv1s1on of the Sports Assoc1atJ.on to which all students automatically belong and other members pay an annual fee

The governing body of the association 1s the council This ts compnsed of a delegate of each affihated sporting club, four nominees of the Un1vers1ty Council, the Executive Officer of the assoc1ahon (being also the secretary of the association) the Director of Adm1n1strat1on and Reg1strar of the un1vers1ty or his deputy, a student representative of the Fhnders Athletic Club, three members of the association who are not members of affiliated clubs and appointed members of the Executive Committee who are not already members of the council

The association s pollcy 1s to encourage wide spread parhctpahon 1n competitive and recreational achvthes by members at all levels of abtl11y Ex!stmg fac1btJes mclude the Alan Mitchell Sports Centre which contains a large multi sport floor for a vanety of activities, the Weight Room1

three squash courts and totlet and change fac1hties Outdoors there are about 31 acres of sports fields1

containing four grass tennis courts 1 six hard courts facilities for traditional outdoor sports and the Pavihon for changing and as a centre for social achv1bes of clubs Orienteering running and outdoor adventure tracks are located through the forested area near R.tng Road

the clubs and the recreation programme The clubs currently include a1k1do athletics baseball, basketball1 canoeing1 cncket (mens and womens), fencing, F1hp1no martial arts football hockey Judo karate, tnathlon netball1 rowing, touch football1 Shao Lin, soccer (mens) squash Tae Kwondo tennis underwater, volley ball, waterskl and wtlderness The recreational programme provides for fitness activ1hes aerobics super Circwt lunchtime sports and a vanety of dtfferent recreational pursuits For those who wish to do their own unscheduled activity the Weight Room is very popular catering for different needs and people, or the sports hall can be avatlable for casual use such as basketball table tennis, 8 ball badnunton or other acb.vtties

An Aquahc Centre standing at the Patawalonga (Glenelg North) serves as the base for the aquatic clubs and stores a vanety of water craft as well as havtng change room facthtles

The Sports Association 1s aff1ltated with the Australian Uruvers1tJ.es Sports Federation Inc and Flinders teams often participate 1n inter wuvers1ty contests held at chfferent venues around Australta each year Representatives selected for the AUSF team could participate 1n teams against other un1vers1hes or 1n World Student Games or Champ1onslups

Student Loan Fund

The Student Loan Fund ts a fund of the un1vers1ty adrrurustered by the un1vers1ty and the Union Loans may be made to students when their academic performance is or will be 1mpa1red by financial d1fficul1y Loans to aid payment of the Student Se1V1ce Fee can be obtamed from the loans officer 1n the Cashier s Office Personal loans normally for a sum no greater than $400 to be repaid w1th1n one year, can be approved by the Welfare Officer 111 the Union office

The Students' Assoc1at1on

The role of the Students Assoc1atlon 1s broad and vaned The basic alffi ts to promote and protect the interests of students and this 1s undertaken at a federal state and un1vers1ty level Both issues of particular relevance to students and issues of social unportance are pursued through lobbying govern ment organ1sabons working with commun1ty groups, mamtammg bnks with the National Union of Students gaming med.Ia attention and ensunng student involvement 10 the dec1s1on making process witlun the un1vers1ty

All students are members, and the members elect the Coordtnatlng group, and the office bearers annually The Coord1nab.ng group oversees the Students1 Assoc1ation between General Student Meetings Thus the organ1sation ts a democratic and representative body for all students Students manage and ma1nta1n the organisation, and of course the office bearers are answerable to students Campaigns that are pursued through the Students Association are focused around issues of direct relevance to students and currently, two of the ma1or concerns of the organisation are the threat of voluntary student un1omsm and up front fees Other issues of general social and environ mental importance are also given a voice through the Students Association

The Students Association has recently employed a Student Rights Officer who is able to answer any questions about courses, lecturers and your nghts She ts responsible for helping students appeal against un1vers1ty dec1s1ons, and also aids student representatives 1n understanchng their roles The Students' Assoc1ahon also employs an Education Research Officer, and a Women's Research Officer to make sure that all of the information used tn campaigns 1s up to date and useful to all students

The General Secretary coordinates the Students Assoc1atton and ts the pubhc spokesperson for students at Fhnders The position also involves representmg the students either as individuals or as a group to the un1vers1ty adm1n1stratton Campaigns are initiated by the general secretary who 1s always available for student consultatton The Women1s Officer coordinates campaigns of relevance to women These campaigns range from those of safety on campus to women's health and welfare issues She 1s the convener of Women on Campus' and sits on a vanety of equal opporturuty and welfare comtruttees

The Education Officer ts the main campaign orgaruser m the assoctat.J.on, and aids the General Secretary and Women s Officer in running campaigns of educattonal s1gruficance

The Students' Association also produces a pubhcatton called Empire Times This proVIdes a

In this constttutton and any regulations made thereunder -

'Academic day means a normal teaclung day in an academic semester determined in accordance wtth Statute 6 3 The Academic Year of the un1vers1ty1

General Student Meeting means a general meeting of the members of the Association convened tn accordance wtth this constitution,

•Postgraduate student means a student as defined by Statute 8 3 of The Flinders Un1vers1ty of South Australia,

'Schedule means the Schedule of Regulabons made by the Associatton in accordance wtth Clause 24 of thts constitution

(The Association means the Students' Assocration of the University;

University means The Fhnders University of South Australia and

University Council means the Counctl of the Un1vers1ty

In all clauses of tlus consbtution, the fenurune includes the mascuhne and the singular includes the plural and vtce versa, wherever applicable

3 OBJECT OF 111E ASSOCIATION

The ob1ect of the Association shall be to promote and protect the interests of students 4 POWER OF 11IE ASSOCIATION
