1 The form and method of reproduchon of each thesis to be submitted for a degree shall be sub1ect to approval as follows

(a) a sample copy of each of four represen tat1ve pages m the form proposed by the candidate shall be submitted to the L1branan so that the method of repro ducbon may be approved,

(b) unless otherwise approved by the Ltbranan, theses shall be presented on quarto or A4 paper on one side of the paper only double spaced, and with margms of at least 4cm on the left hand side and 2cm on the nght hand side and sufficient at the top and bottom to allow for tnmmmg dunng bmchng

2 Each thesis when subnutted for a degree, shall be in the form and by the method of reproduction approved by the Ltbranan tn accordance with Clause 1 above

3 When the thesis 1s submitted for exammat1on four copies shall be lodged with the Faculty Registrar If the thesis, or any part of 1t, ts typewntten the four copies shall include the ongmal

4 The thesis shall incorporate 1n the following order

(a) a htle page gtVIng the title of the thesis m full, the names and degrees of the candidate, the name of the academic organisational unit and Faculty of the University associated with the work and the date when submitted for the degree (b) table of contents

(c) a sununary in not more than 500 words, (d) the following declaration signed by the

canchdate

'I certify that this thesis does not incorporate without acknowledgment any matenal preVIously submitted for a degree or diploma in any wuvers1ty and that to the best of my knowledge and behef 1t does not contain any matenal previously publtshed or written by another person except where due reference 1s made 1n the text

(e) the followmg declarat10n signed by the pnnc1pal supervisor (where the thesis 1s submitted with the approval of the supemsor)

5 Diagrams figures photographs etc, should where pracbcable, be drawn or photographed on quarto or A4 paper All full page figures should form a nght hand page with the legend either at the bottom or tf necessary, on the page facmg the figures Diagrams, maps tables, etc exceeding quarto or A4 size should be folded so as to read as a nght hand page when open If chagrams figures photography, etc are to be mounted on a page a dry mounting process should be used

6 Wherever possible tables should be inserted m the appropnate place 10 the text but lengthy or bulky tables should appear as an appenchx.

7 A form of temporary bmchng may be used for the subm1ss1on of theses to examiners Examiners shall be informed that the presentation of theses 10 soft bound form ts Un1vers1ty procedure and the degree shall not be awarded until permanently bound copies are subnutted to the Faculty

On completion of the exam1nation process, and before a recommendation for the award of a degree can be forwarded to the Faculty Board, a candidate shall be requued to submit two permanently bound copies of the theses with the Faculty Registrar The thesis shall be sewn, trimmed and bound with stiff covers bound with dark cloth The Faculty Board shall recommend to Academic Senate that the degree be awarded The Academic Senate shall certify that the candidate has quahfied for the award of the degree

8 On the spine of the thesis shall be given tn gold lettenng of smtable. size the surname of the candidate and the title of the thesis, abbrevtated tf necessary If the lettenng will not fit across the spme 1t shall run along the spme readmg from top to bottom

9 When pubhshed papers are submitted as add1nonal eVIdence they shall be bound m the back of the thesis as an appenchx

10 When a thesis is accepted for the award of a degree two copies shall be lodged by the Faculty Registrar 10 the Library and one copy shall not be available for loan In the case of a typewntten thesis the two copies shall be the ongmal and one other copy, and the onginal copy shall not be available for loan In appropnate cases the second copy lodged in the Library may by arrangement wt th the Libra.nan, be housed 10 a Faculty The second copy must be available for loan to approved borrowers on demand

11 Unless otherwise approved by the Academic Senate in accordance with the provisions of Clause 13 below access to theses accepted for

the award of a degree shall be subject to the following condttlons

(a) academic staff and research students of the Un1verSity may consult any thesis without the pnor consent of the author,

(b) for three years after the degree has been awarded, other readers must obtain the consent of the author or the head of the d1sc1phne concerned or the Librarian before being permitted to consult the thesis

(c) for three years after the degree has been awarded no copy may be made of the thesis or part of it without the prior consent of the author

12 When a thesis has been accepted for the award of a degree the author shall be asked if he or she ts prepared to waive the cond.Ittons referred tom Clause 11 (b) and (c) above

13 A request from an author to place a specific restnctton on access to his thesis other than those referred to 1n Clause 11 above will be sub1ect to approval by the Academic Senate Such request will be considered by the Academic Senate only on the grounds that the thesis contains confidential matenal or that it was a condition imposed by the owner of pnvate records and matenal used by the author or that the author was tn an employment or other contract relationship with a thrrd party that made the restncbon a condition of the contract The Academic Senate will not approve an apphcatton to restnct access to a theSls for a penod of more than 18 months from the acceptance of the award of the degree 14 Each person consulting a thesis shall sign a

statement acknowledging that they have been given access to the thesis for consultation only and that no part will be published or para phrased without the prior consent of the author and that the authors hterary nghts wtll be respected

1 The Council may make rules governing the award of any prize or scholarship within the Un1vers1ty

2 The Council may vaiy the rules from bme to bme but the tttle and purpose of any pnze or scholarsh1p shall not be changed

3 Only students who are taking the relevant exanunabon or exammabons for the first tune shall be el!gtble for the award of any pnze or scholarsh1p awarded on performance 1n such exammab.on or exanunations

7 7 Admission to Degrees

1 A candidate for adm1ss1on to a degree in the Un1vers1ty shall be presented at a graduation ceremony to the Chancellor by the head of the faculty m which the canchdate has qual!fied for the degree The Chancellor may appomt a substitute to act for the Chancellor or for a head of faculty A canchdate may be adnutted either in absentia or by attend.Ing a meetmg of the Council if the Council so approves 2 The forms of presentatJ.on for and admission

7 9 Academic Dress•

1 The academic dress for undergraduates and graduates of the Un1vers1ty shall be as determined by Council from bme to bme 2 The styles and colours of gowns hoods

pipmgs and caps shall be matched to sttmdard samples held by the Registrar

3 The ceremonial dress for the Chancellor the Vice Chancellor and for other offtcers shall be as approved by the Counctl from time to tune 4 The ceremonial dress of members of the

Council and of Boards of the facult:Les who are not graduates shall be the same as the academic dress for the Doctor of Philosophy but without the scarlet facings on the gown and without a hood

7 10 Degree of Doctor of the University
