The Bachelor of Arts (Information Management) is a four-year full-time course (or equivalent part-time) in which a student spends three years in academic studies and one year in paid supervised professional practice which is undertaken after satisfactory completion of the second year of the full-time course.

The academic component of the course consists of:

(a) a compulsory core compnsing studies in information management, accounting and economics; and

(b) elective discipline studies — students may select these from a wide range of subjects.

Students are required to complete at least a second major study sequence, ie in addition to the compulsory major in information management. The second major study may either extend or complement the compulsory core and would reflect a student's vocational intentions.

The course aims to produce graduates with a high level of general education and specific vocational skills in the use of information to enable an organization to achieve its objectives.

Graduates are prepared for employment as facilitators in matching the information requirements of management in an organization with the available information technology.

Through a general academic education, the course is designed to promote students' ability to: express ideas coherently and effectively; draw proper inferences from information;

understand wntten and oral communications; analyse situations, draw conclusions and develop strategies; and understand the discipline-based and interpersonal contexts of information and to communicate effectively in a range of settings.

Through its core studies in information management. the course aims to develop to a high level the students' ability to:

(a) use computers as a personal tool and develop sufficient computer awareness to communicate effectively with computer professionals;

(b) liaise between general management and computer professionals to meet the information requirements of an organization;

(c) assess changing organizational requirements and participate in the development of information-based solutions;

(d) monitor the availability of new information-handling approaches and technology and their applicability to specific employment environments;

(e) understand the human aspects of organization and their implications for effective communication, information systems and resource management.

Students are able to prepare for particular vocational outcomes through elective discipline studies, and the course enables students to meet, or progress towards satisfying, the academic requirements of relevant professional bodies and registration au honties.

Course Regulations

1. To satisfy general entrance requirements for admission to the course for a Bachelor of Arts (Information Management) a candidate must:

satisfactorily complete a Year 12 course of study approved by the Academic Board;

or

possess other formal qualifications approved by the Academic Board;

or

be able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Academic Board that he/she has the motivation and the capacity for tertiary studies.

Note: Approved Year 12 courses of study include those meeting VCAB conditions for satisfactory completion of a Year 12 course of study, those which prior to 1987 satisfied VISE conditions, those which prior to 1979 satisfied the university entrance requirements of the VUSEB, and those deemed by VTAC as satisfying university entrance requirements.

2. To be awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Information Management) a student shall have pursued his/her studies for at least three years plus a year of supervised professional practice.

3. The subjects for the course and the conditions on which such subjects may be taken shall be as prescribed from time to time by the Academic Board.

4. The regulations for the course together with details of subjects and the prerequisite and special entry conditions shall be published in the Handbook of the Melbourne College of Advanced Education or supplement thereto.

5. No student may pursue a course of study or receive credit for subjects taken during a year of a course unless his/her selection of subjects has been approved by the Academic Board. Approval will not be granted for a student to receive credit for two or more subjects determined by the Academic Board as having substantial common content. It is the responsibility of each student to obtain approval of his/her selection of subjects.

6. (a) A student's progress in his/her course of study shall be expressed in terms of Years. A Year shall be defined by a cumulative total of points to be scored as a credit for subjects passed.

The minimum requirements for satisfactory completion of the course for a Bachelor of Arts (Information Management) shall be 144 points where each point shall be defined as 35 Involvement Time hours.

The points to be scored for each subject shall be as prescribed from time to time by the Academic Board and published together with the details of subjects.

(b) A student shall be:

(I) In the first Year of his/her course until such time as his/her cumulative points score shall equal or exceed twenty-seven points;

(ii) In the second Year of his/her course from when his/her cumulative points score equals twenty- seven points until such time as It shall equal or exceed sixty-three points;

(iii) in the third Year of his/her course from when his/her cumulative points score equals sixty-three points until such time as he/she satisfactorily completes the year of supervised professional practice;

(iv) in the fourth Year of his/her course from when his/her cumulative points score equals ninety-nine points, including thirty-six points for successful completion of the year of supervised professional practice until such time as his/her cumulative points score shall equal or exceed one hundred and forty-four points.

7. Except where special permission is granted by the Academic Board a student in each year of a course shall receive approval to enrol for subjects totalling no more than 40 points.

8. A student who does not pass in a subject may be credited with the points to be scored for that subject by the Academic Board, having regard to his/her performance in all subjects taken by him/her (whether taken in one year or more), in accordance with principles determined by the Academic Board.

9. A student who has completed part or all of a previous course of study at tertiary level or has achieved previous professional experience relevant to a course for a Bachelor of Arts (Information Management) may be given credit for this previous study or experience within the student's current course enrolment providing the Academic Board approves such credit. Where there is no equivalent subject or subjects the student may be credited with an appropriate points score to be determined by the Academic Board.

10. A student may be authorized to include in his/her course subjects offered in another course of this institution or of another institution provided that the Academic Board considers such subjects to be of an appropriate standard and relevant to the students current course enrolment.

11. The total number of points which may be credited to a student under Regulations 9 and 10 shall not exceed 50 points in Groups 1, 2 and 3. In addition students may be credited with part of the year of supervised professional practice.

12. To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Arts (Information Management) a student must:

(a) gain a cumulative score of at least 144 points, 36 of which shall be gained through completion of the Professional Experience requirement, and the remaining 108 of which shall be distributed amongst Groups 1 to 3 as follows:

Group 1 — At least 27 points but no more than 45 points.

The 27 points must include: Information Management A, Accounting for Management', Economics A;

Groups 2 and 3 — At least 48 points, including at least 28 points in Group 3. The 48 points must include:

Information Management B1, 82, B4, B5, B6. The 28 points in Group 3 must include: Information Management C1, C2, C3. C5;

'The requirement to complete Accounting for Management is waived for students who have passed Accounting A, B11 and B22 as part of their elective discipline studies.

(b) use the elective studies to complete a second major study (le, beyond the compulsory major in Information Management) which either complements or extends the core studies; and

(c) satisfactorily complete Supervised Professional Practice.

Note: Group 1 comprises first-year studies.

Group 2 comprises studies for which the prerequisite conditions have been met as a result of studies in Group 1 in the same or a specified related area.

Group 3 comprises studies for which the prerequisite conditions have been met as a result of studies in Group 2. or other studies in Group 3, in the same ora specified related area.

These regulations should be read and Interpreted In conjunction with all documents relating to procedures of the Academic Board.
