An intensive program in which students have the opportunity to develop and extend selected aspects of this subject in depth. A number of skills related to classroom teaching are introduced and students are encouraged to develop and research personal ideas or concepts.

Involvement Time and Teaching Methods
The Involvement Time for this subject is 210 hours. There will

be two 3-hour discussion/studio/practical sessions per week for two semesters.
Assessment
(i) a folio of work comprising at least one completed project from each of four main areas: carving, turning, bending, construction (70%); (ii) two written assignments each 500 words (15%); and (iii) two 30-minute written examinations covering specific techniques and processes (15%). Results will be graded.
Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) 61
The Bachelor of Education degree is integrated with the Associate Diploma of Social Science (Child Care), the Diploma of Social Science (Child Care Services) and the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood). The duration of the courses is as follows:
Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood): Four years of full-time or equivalent part-time study with at least one year of expenence between Part C and Part 0 level studies.
Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood): Three years of full-time or equivalent part-time study.
Diploma of Social Science (Child Care Services): Three years of full-time or equivalent part-time study.
Associate Diploma of Social Science (Child Care): Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study.
In order to reflect particular emphases in the courses which are considered important by the Institute, the bodies of knowledge, understanding and skill are organized into four main areas:
General Studies, Human Development Studies, Education and Care Studies, and Practicum Studies.
General Studies enhance and extend the liberal education of the student. A four-year major study and a two-year minor study are undertaken The available major and minor studies are in Art, Australian Studies. Biological Science, Dance, English, Interdisciplinary Arts and Music.
Human Development Studies develop knowledge and understanding of the nature and processes of child development - psychological, physical and social - and the influences upon such development.
Education and Care Studies have two broad purposes: to develop an understanding of theones and principles relating to care and education as they derive from various related disciplines, and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for the planning, implementation and administration of children's services.
Practicum Studies also have two main purposes. The first is to provide background knowledge skills in a range of disciplines in the arts. humanities and sciences which have relevance for early childhood programs and care practices. The second purpose is to provide supervised field expenence in which pnnciples and theory can be applied.
Diplomates who hold the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) or the Diploma of Arts (Child Care Services) and have completed one year of work experience may resume their course and undertake the equivalent. on a part-time basis, of one further year of full-time study in order to qualify for the award of Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood).
The course descnptions which follow list all approved subjects.
However, in any one year, because of such factors as staff availability and funding, not all subjects are offered. Details of subjects to be offered in 1989 in the areas of General Studies and Professional Studies will be made available to students at the time of enrolment or re-enrolment.

Course Regulations
Specific regulations for the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood). Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood), Diploma of Sbcial Science (Child Care Services) and Associate Diploma of Social Science (Child Care) courses.
1. In addition to the regulations described hereinafter a student of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) course shall be subject to the Common Regulations for the courses for a Bachelor of Education at the Melbourne College of Advanced Education (hereinafter referred to as the Common Regulations).
2. A student of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) may qualify for the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) award. To be awarded the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) a student shall have pursued studies for at least three years full-time or equivalent part-time and satisfied the conditions in Regulation 5 below.
3. A student of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) may qualify for the Associate Diploma of Social Science (Child Care) award after at least two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study and satisfaction of the conditions in Regulation 7 below, and the Diploma of Social Science (Child Care Services) after at least three years of full-time or equivalent pail-time study and satisfaction of the conditions in Regulation 6 below.
4. The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) may be granted to a student who has met the prescribed conditions and who has completed satisfactorily -
4.1 Prescribed Human Development Studies. Education and Care Studies and Practicum Studies amounting to at least 87 points (and including 100 days of supervised, approved field experience) as set out in Appendix 1, Categories 1 and 2 and either Category 3.1 or Category 3.2.
4.2 General Studies of at least 28 points. including an approved study of 20 points taken over tour years and another approved study of 8 points taken over two years, drawn from those subjects listed in Appendix 2, or approved equivalent studies.
4.3 A minimum of 29 points of approved elective studies selected from subjects listed in Appendix 3, including at least 12 points from Elective Category D, 6 points from Elective Category

and 5 points from Elective Category C2.5. The Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) award may be granted to a student who has met the prescribed conditions and who has completed satisfactorily -
5.1 Human Development Studies, Education and Care Studies and Practicum Studies amounting to at least 75 points (and including 100 days of supervised approved field experience) as set out in Appendix 1, Categories 1 and 3.1.
5.2 General Studies of at least 22 points including an approved study taken over three years of 14 points and another approved study of 8 points taken over two years, drawn from those subjects listed in Appendix 2.

7.1 The following subjects as set out in Appendix 1 amounting to 56 points: Human Development Studies A and B, Education and Care Studies A and B. and Practicum Studies A2, A4, B2, B4 (which include 65 days of supervised field experience),

9. For purposes of industrial awards or related reasons, the Board of Studies (IECD) may designate the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) award with subscripts as follows —

9.1 For the designation 'Teaching' the award must include studies as set out for the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) award as defined in Clause 5 above.
9.2 For the designation of 'Care' the award must include studies as set out for the Diploma of Social Science (Child Care Services) award as defined in Clause 6 above.
10. The total number of points which may be gained under Regulation 11 of the Common Regulations shall not exceed 117 towards the Bachelor of Education award, not more than 72 towards the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) or Diploma of Social Science (Child Care Services) awards, and not more than 36 towards the Associate Diploma of Social Science (Child Care) award.
