A. DEGREE WITH HONOURS

Common First Year: All students enrolling in their first year will study four grade 1 subjects. These subjects should normally include not more than two subjects taught by any one department and at least three of the four subjects must be able to be carried through to at least the second year.

There

will

be no separate honours courses or honours examinations in first year.

46

All first year annual examinations will be classified 1st honours

Honours 2A Honours 2В Pass

First year students who intend to enter honours schools at the beginning of their second year must pass the annual first year examinations in the appropriate subject (or subjects) with at least an honours 2В grading.

They must also pass in such other subjects as faculty may require. All such students are automatically eligible to enrol in the appropriate honours school or schools, provided that no student may enrol in more than two honours schools.

Optional Additional Work in First Year: In addition to the work for grade 1 subjects as set out in the details of subjects certain departments will provide optional additional work in first year. The nature of this work will vary from department to department but in general will consist of extra lectures, or tutorials based on the additional work set.

The object of such additional work Is to supplement the normal course work and to amplify and deepen the student's course of study. It will be of general use and interest to all students and will also provide practice In the use of intellectual and other skills which will be particularly useful In the honours work of second and later years.

Optional additional work is freely available to all students and may be taken in the subject in which it is offered. However, students who intend to enter the honours school et the beginning of their second year are strongly advised to opt for the additional work In first year which may be set by the appropriate department or departments.

Students are advised that:

(i) such work is optional and is open to all first year students but will be of particular use to students who Intend to enter honours schools;

(ii) such work is in no way a pre-requisite to admission Into the honours schools in second year — I.e. a student who chooses not to study this work will not be denied entry into the honours school simply because he has not studied the additional work;

(iii) such work will not form a separate part of the annual examinations although departments may if they wish test such work throughout the year or by means of optional questions on the annual examination papers.

Entry into Honours Schools: At the beginning of his second year any student who has gained at least an hofs. 2В In the appropriate subject (or subjects) and who has passed such other subjects as faculty may require is eligiЫe to enrol In a pure or combined honours course. Such enrolments must be approved by the faculty through the sub-dean. The prescribed details of honours courses pure and combined are set out in the handbook. Students are asked to take careful note of those subjects which are strongly recommended by Individual departments as useful supporting subjects.

Admission to third and fourth years of the honours course must be approved by the head or heads of departments concerned and by the faculty through the sub-dean. Normally such approval will be given only to students who have gained first or second class honours in their honours subjects and who have successfully passed all the prescribed supporting subjects.

47

The third and fourth years of honours courses are limited to full-time students. Any variation of these requirements may only be given by faculty or by the dean acting on behalf of faculty.

Written work required as an integral part of a course as set out in the details of subjects must be completed by the dates specified, since the time available for such work is an essential component of the requirement itself.

Students who, without the formal permission of the head of department, fail to complete written work by the specified dates may be reported to faculty for unsatisfactory progress and/or credit for the a..yjеct may be withheld.

Final honours theses or essay-work: The B.A. thesis or essay-work for final year honours, In so far as it constitutes an examinable part of the final examination, must be completed by the date specified. Such work submitted after the due date without formal permission from the head of the department will be substantially penalized in the final honours examination, and no such thesis or essay-work will be received for examination after the last day of November in the year in which final honours examination is taken, without formal permission from the head of the department.

Except with the permission of the faculty no extension of time can be granted beyond the last day of the first term of the year following that In which the final honours examination Is taken.

В. THE ORDINARY DEGREE

Grades: The subjects are divided into grades. A grade 1 subject Is a first year subject, a grade 2 subject is a second year subject and a grade 3 subject is a third year subject.

Major: A major is one subject that is pursued for three consecutive years. For example, when you have passed French 1, French 2 and French 3, you will have spent three years studying French and will have completed a French major.

Every student's choice of subjects must be approved by the sub-dean before first term begins. The following account of the regulations should help students to make a preliminary selection.

(i) Every student must pass at least NINE subjects.

(ii) Each course must include at least TWO majors.

(iii) Each course must include at least five subjects above grade 1 level.

Normally the course pattern for the ordinary degree would be:

First year: Four grade 1 subjects.

Second year: Three grade 2 subjects.

Third year: Two grade 3 subjects.

Written work required as an integral part of a course as set out in the details of subjects must be completed by the date specified, since the time available for such work is an essential component of the require-

ment Itself. .

Students who, without the formal permission of the head of department, fail to complete written work by the specified dates may be reported to faculty for unsatisfactory progress end/or credit for the subject may be withheld.

After studying the list of subjects and approved majors (from p. 49) and the Details of Subjects (from p. 62), a student will plan e course 48

to submit for approval. Obviously a great many courses would satisfy the regulations; the following combinations are printed only as samples,

All the above courses conform with the regulations. The courses allow some specialization according to developing interest. There are many possible combinations. It is Important to look carefully at the details of all subjects, particularly those that have not been studied at school.

SUBJECTS

(1) The subjects of the course for the ordinary degree are those Included in the table below.

(2) Some subjects may not be taken until others have been passed. For a list of these subjects and their prerequisites, see pp. 54-55.

(3) The order in which subjects comprising a major must be taken is established by reading across the page from left to right.

These subjects must be taken in Separate Years

(4) Certain "mixed majors" are permitted and a list of these will be found on pp. 56-57.

(5) Commencing in 1973 Faculty wishes to distinguish clearly between grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3 subjects. As a result all subjects have been differentiated by the use of a numerical and alphabetical code.

49

The number 1, 2, 3 or 4, Indicates the grade of subject.

The letter A, B, etc. Indicates the nature of the subject. . e.g. History 2G is Australian History as a grade 2 subject.

History 3G Is Australian History as a grade 3 subject.

Students then will not be able to retain credit for any two or more subjects differentiated by the same alphabetical letter or in some cases by the same title, e.g. International Relations 2 and Inter- national Relations 3.
