2.6 Course Committee

The Graduate Diploma in Special Education (E.C.) Committee: a standing committee of the Board.

3.0 LENGTH OF COURSE

3.1 The course requires a minimum of one year of full-time study, or an equivalent of part-time study.

3.2 The maximum period of time for which a candidate may be enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Special Education (E.C.) course shall be five years, provided that, in special circumstances, the Board may grant an extension of time where a student Is permitted to intermit.

4.0 REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

4.1 Applicants may be admitted to the course If they have successfully completed a Diploma of Teaching course at UG2 level, and have had at least two years of experience in a school, pre-school or another approved educational institution, or have satisfied special requirements for admis- sion determined by the Institute from time to time.

4.2 Special Entry for a limited number of applicants who hold a different teaching qualification (e.g. T.P.T.C., T,I.T.C.) may be granted, provided that they have the necessary teaching experience and provided that the proportion of special entry students enrolled in the course at any one time does not exceed that fraction of the total enrolment set by the accreditation authority.

4.3 Normally students enrolled in the course will be required to undertake all the prescribed components of the course and the required number of elective components. That is, advanced standing will not normally be granted.

Graduate Diploma in Special Education (Early Childhood) 5.0 COURSE REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Special Education (Early Childhood), students are required to undertake 38 units, each comprising 10 hours of face-to-face contact, together with a minimum of 30 demand hours for each unit. Students must undertake the equivalent of 10 units of practicum in an approved institution.

5.1 Prescribed Components

Physical Development: Structure, Function and Abnormality — 4 units Intellectual Abilities and Their Development — 2 units

Intellectual Disability — 2 units

Auditory Development and Deviations — 2 units Visual Development and Deviations — 2 units

Social/Emotional Development and Deviations — 4 units Language Development — 2 units

Language Disabilities — 2 units Working with Parents — 2 units Measurement — 2 units Programme Planning — 6 units Practicum — 10 units

5.2 Alternative Arrangements for Prescribed Components

Where a student can provide evidence that he has already sucessfully completed work similar to that undertaken in a prescribed component, that student may, with the approval of the Course Committee, be permitted to undertake a reading component equal in unit length to the prescribed component in question, provided that the total number of reading units he is undertaking does not exceed 4 units.

5.3 Optional Components Genetic Bases — 2 units or

Teaching Reading and Mathematics to Handicapped Children — 2 units.

5.4 Elective Component

Research Evaluation — 2 units

6.0 To satisfactorily complete a unit/component, a student shall attend such lectures, tutorial classes, seminars; undertake field work and complete to the satisfaction of the Course Committee such assignments/examinations as may be prescribed by the Course Committee.

7.0 REVIEW OF STUDENTS' PROGRESS

7.1 The progress of every full-time student will be reviewed by the Course Committee at the end of June.

7.2 The progress of every part-time student will be reviewed at the end of each academic year by the Course Committee.

7.3 Normally, to progress to components offered in the next year of the course, a student must have satisfactorily completed the components undertaken during the previous year.

7.4 Where a student fails to satisfy the requirements of a particular component of the course, that student may be:

(i) required to undertake such additional work or satisfactorily complete 92

Graduate Diploma in Special Education (Early Childhood) such additional assessments as are considered necessary by the lecturer concerned,

or

(ii) with the approval of the Course Committee, required to repeat the particular component.

7.5 Where a student's progress is considered to be unsatisfactory the Board, on the recommendation of the Course Committee, may

(i) suspend the student from the course (ii) terminate the course of the student.

7.6 A student who has been suspended from the course or has had his course terminated, may exercise the right of appeal in writing to the Board.

7.7 No student whose course has been suspended or terminated shall resume studies unless permission is given by the Board.

8.0 WITHDRAWAL, DEFERMENT AND INTERMITTENCE

8.1 Any student wishing to withdraw from the course shall notify the Course Committee in writing. The student may obtain a transcript of all those components of the course completed up to the time of withdrawal.

8.2 A student who has withdrawn from the course may apply to be re-admitted.

Normally, such a student will not be given priority over new enrolling students.

8.3 Normally, a student will be allowed to Intermit from the course only in case of illness or compassionate circumstances of an exceptional nature. A student not permitted to intermit may, nonetheless, be permitted to defer from the course.

8.4 Any student wishing to defer or intermit from the course must apply In writing to the Course Committee. Students granted permission to Intermit will not have the period of their Intermittence deducted from the maximum time allowed to complete the course. Students for whom deferral has been granted will have to deduct the period of deferral from the maximum time.
