UNREVISED DIPLOMA COURSE

Students who enrolled in the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) course prior to 1982 will continue in Part 2 and Part 3 Level studies of the unrevised Diploma.

The content of these subjects, and accompanying Regulations, follow.

PROFESSIONAL STUDIES SUBJECTS Human Development

Part 3 (6 units)

A core component of 3 units in psychological and physical health integrates and extends the various aspects of development treated in the first two years.

Students then select a particular age range to study in depth in the latter half of the year. Students are expected to select developmental stage specializations appropriate to their professional intentions and personal interests. The stage speciality studies, each of 3 units, are the early years, adolescence, and the middle years.

Early Childhood Education Part 3 (6 units)

The study of programme planning and evaluation is continued and closely tied to the Practicum experiences of students who will now be undertaking this responsibility for complete groups and classes over extended periods in their field work. There is a special component, linked to studies in Human Development, on teaching children with special needs. Administration and management receives detailed attention, and teacher-parent-community relationships are a focus of study.

Foundations of Education Part 3 (6 units)

Core interdisciplinary component

Ethnic minorities and education 3 units

An examination of the nature of culture, the function of the school and kindergarten in the context of a multi-cultural society, and the importance of cross-cultural perspectives in early childhood education.

Alternative Components 3 units

Students may choose one of three areas offered in a given year to explore aspects of education which have arisen in Foundations of Education.

The alternative areas offered will be chosen from:

Alternatives in education 3 units

Inequality in education 3 units

History of childhood 3 units

Learning and instruction 3 units

Sociology of teaching 3 units

Comparative Education A 3 units

Elective Subject Studies

In Year 3, an elective subject study of three units is undertaken, the options being as set out under Curriculum Studies Electives in the Revised Course. (It should be noted that although the time allocation shown therein is 29 hours, electives taken in 1984 will be 30 hours.)

Bachelor of Education Practicum

Practicum consists of field days and teaching practice related to the aims of subjects included in the Early Childhood Education and Development Strand, particularly the development of child study techniques, the understanding of the role of the teacher, the acquisition of planning, teaching and evaluation skills, the development of communication skills with children and adults, and the acquisition of basic administrative skills.

The Practicum takes place in a variety of settings for the care, development and education of children 0-8 years; these include families, day-care, toddler groups and play groups, kindergartens, and lower primary classrooms.

The total number of days in Practicum in Year 3 is 70 days (21 units).

GENERAL STUDIES SUBJECTS

Students study in two disciplines over the first two years, so that they may experience the different demands involved. In Year 3 they continue the study of one of these disciplines to Sub-Major level (8 units in Year 3) to a deeper level of understanding. (Minor level is a 12 unit study over Years 1 and 2.)

The content of Parts 1 and 2 is the same as that set out for the Revised course.

Part 3 studies in the Unrevised course have one unit of additional time available but in other respects are similar to those of the Revised. (Eight units in Part 3 of the Unrevised course; seven in the Revised.)

REGULATIONS

While most clauses in the Regulations for the Revised course apply to the Unrevised course, those identifying the unit requirements for the Diploma differ. The following clauses are specific to the Unrevised Diploma, and should be read instead of the comparable clauses in the Revised Course Regulations:

4.0 COURSE REQUIREMENTS

4.2 The Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) course requires study and experience in the General Studies and Professional Studies Strands amounting to at least 122 units and 152.5 days of Practicum.

4.2.1 Within the General Studies Strand, the candidate must take a Minor and a Sub-Major study amounting to 32 units.

4.2.2 Within the Professional Studies Strand, the candidate must under- take studies amounting to at least 90 units as follows:
