The Bachelor of M1dw1fery 1s a program for registered nurses and m1dw1ves which requires one year of full time study (or up to four years part time) It 1s available m internal and external mode The course Is offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences

COURSE AIMS

The overall aim of the course 1s to prepare registered nurses with a comprehensive grounding m advanced theory and m1dw1fery practice Spec1flcally 1t alms to educate midwives who

are reflective about practice and have well developed clinical reasoning skills understand how social environmental and economic factors impact on m1dw1fery practice are able to negotiate with those who have different Interests and understand cultural differences and their relationship to m1dw1fery care

The Bachelor of M1dw1fery (for Registration) alms to educate m1dw1ves who meet the requirements for reg1strat1on with the Nurses Board of South Australia as a registered midwife

The Bachelor of M1dw1fery (for Registered M1dw1ves) aims to develop reflective practice skills and skills to undertake m1dw1fery research and advance the d1sc1plme of midwifery

COURSE RULE

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants for the Bachelor of Midwifery (for Reg1strat1on) must be eligible for registration as a general nurse with a nurses registering authority Jn Australia and hold a current pract1smg certificate Applicants for the Bachelor of Midwifery (for Registered Midwives) must be eligible for registration as a m1dw1fe with a nurses reg1stermg authority in Australia and hold a current

practising certificate International students must

be registered m the country where they intend to undertake chmcal experience

PROGRAM OF STUDY

A students program of study must be approved by the Program Approver

This 1s a I 08 unit course for which all students receive 72 units of credit. Except with perm1ss1on of the Faculty Board the course must be completed w1thm four consecutive semesters To qualify for the Bachelor of Midwifery a student must complete 36 umts with a grade of P or NGP or better m each topic according to the program of study below

Not all option topics necessarily are available In a given year

Not all core topics are available m each semester therefore a change m mode of study from full time to part time or vice versa 1s hkely to interrupt the program of study

Clinical placements are compulsory and will normally be undertaken 1n weekly blocks A student who fails the practice component of any topic will receive a Fail grade for that topic A student may at any time be precluded or removed from a chnical placement

The award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion may constitute pr1ma fac1e evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University s pohcy on Student Progress

The Master of M1dw1fery 1s a 54 unit program comprising coursework and either a thesis or a pro1ect which 1s offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences

The program provides two entry pathways M1dw1fery (for Reg1strat1on) and M1dw1fery (for Registered M1dw1ves) COURSE AIMS

It IS expected that graduates will be able to advance the d1sc1phne of midwifery through evolution of conceptual frameworks and the promotion of excellence in m1dw1fery practice participate in facets of the delivery of m1dw1fery care including the planning 1mplementat1on and d1ssemmat1on of m1dw1fery research

demonstrate expertise in the practice of m1dw1fery by the d1ssemlnat1on of research and excellence in practice

apply ethical and theoretical concepts to the analysis and development of professional chrncal judgement,

enhance the quality of m1dw1fery practice m particular practice settings through the use of critical analysis and reflective thought analyse environment forces influencing the delivery of quality m1dw1fery care within a multicultural society

develop and fulfil a range of leadership roles within the m1dw1fery profession

contribute effectively to professional political and socio cultural debate related to midwifery within the health care system and the wider community and

demonstrate an understanding of and an abd1ty to fulfil the role of a contemporary m1dw1fe COURSE RULE

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must hold the Bachelor of Nursmg or the Bachelor of M1dw1fery or an equivalent qualification approved by the Faculty Board Apphcants for the Master of M1dw1fery (for Reg1strat1on) also must be registered general nurses and applicants for the Master of M1dw1fery (for Registered M1dw1ves) must be registered midwives

The Board may under certain circumstances and sub1ect to specific cond1t1ons admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature At the Board s d1scret1on credit may be granted for comparable prior studies

PROGRAM OF STUDY

A students program of study must be approved by the Program Approver

To qualify for the Master of M1dw1fery a student must complete 54 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic according to the program of study below

Students must complete 18 units of core topics and 36 units according to one of the three pathways Not all option topics necessarily are available in a given year and not all core topics and topics offered 1n pathways 2 and 3 will be available 1n each semester A change in mode of study from full time to part time or vice versa therefore 1s hkely to interrupt the program of study Chmcal placements are compulsory and will normally be undertaken m weekly blocks Except with permission of the Faculty Board the program must be completed full time w1thm six consecutive semesters or part trme w1th1n 12 consecutive semesters

A lesser period may be set for students granted credit for previous studies

The Doctor of Philosophy provides an opportunity to carry out orfgmal research m an area of nursing and Its contributing disc1phnes under the supervision of the School of Nursing The area of research 1s negotiated with the School prior to enrolment The PhD m Nursing 1s highly recommended for those nurses who are

expert chnidans 1n any field of practice academics in nursing and/or related disciplines managers of nursing and/or allied health services (The PhD attracts HECS exemptions 1f studies are full time)

The following rule applies to the Doctor of Philosophy

I

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

I A person who holds a bachelors degree with honours class I or 2A from Fhnders

University or who holds qual1frcat1ons deemed by the Board of the appropriate faculty (hereaher referred to as the Board) to be at least equivalent, may be accepted for enrolment as a Doctor of Philosophy student provided that.

(a) the program of studies has been

approved by the Board except that In the case of a person already holdrng the degree of Doctor of Philosophy or an equivalent qual1ficatJon acceptance for enrolment must have been approved by the Academic Senate and

(b) the proposed program of studies can be conveniently pursued and appropriately supervised and

(c) the person 1s judged by the Board to be quahfred to undertake the program Quahficat1ons deemed to be equivalent include the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with minimum credit average masters by coursework with an average grade of D1st1nction or better or masters by research 2 Notw1thstand1ng the provisions of Clause I a

person may be required as a prerequ1s1te for enrolment as a doctoral student to undertake and to complete to the sat1sfact1on of the Board such qualifying studies as the Board prescribes

3 A person who does not hold an honours degree of the University or who does not hold quahficat1ons deemed by the Board to be at least equivalent to an honours degree of the University will be required as a prerequisite for enrolment as a doctoral student to undertake and complete to the sat1sfact1on of the Board such qual1fy1ng studies as the Board prescribes

4 Notwithstanding the provisions of Clause 3 the Academic Senate Jn special circumstances and sub1ect to such cond1t1ons as the Academic Senate prescribes m each case may accept as a doctoral student a person who does not hold an honours degree of a

un1vers1ty or a qualification deemed by the Board of the appropriate faculty to be at least equivalent to an honours degree of a university but who has given evidence satisfactory to the Academic Senate of fitness for doctoral studies and whose enrolment 1s supported by the Board

STUDY REQUIREMENTS

5 Except with the permission of the Board a full time student for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall pursue the approved program of studies for a period of not less than two and not more than four years and six months and a part time student for a period of not less than three and not more than nme years from the month from which enrolment commenced

6 At the conclusion of the approved program of studies or within the approved period as specified 1n Clause 5 above each student for the degree shall present a thesis embodymg the results of the work done while enrolled and contam1ng a significant contr1but1on to knowledge or scholarship w1thm the scope of the subject

7 The thesis presented for the degree shall not contain material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma nor shall it conta1n any material previously published or written by another person except where due reference 1s made in the text of the thesis or in the notes

8 Except with the permission of the Board m the case of a person who 1s required to undertake quahfymg studies any work undertaken before the completion of the qualifying studies shall not be presented for the degree

EXAMINATION

9 The Board shall appoint at least two examiners who shall be external to the University and may appoint additional exammers

I 0 The exammers shall each submit to the Board a written report on the students thesis 11 After cons1dermg the reports of the

examiners the Board shall report to the Academic Senate whether the degree should be awarded or not.

12 After considering a report from the Board the Academic Senate shall decide whether the degree shall be awarded
