COURSE RULE

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The course normally 1s only available to students who hold the Graduate Diploma rn Primary Health Care or who are transferring from the Master of Prrmary Health Care and who have completed an appropriate 36 units of coursework (for which credit will be granted)

However the Faculty Board may under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature

All applicants must present an acceptable research proposal and nomrnat1on for supervisor

PROGRAM OF STUDY

A student s program of study must be approved by the Program Approver

To quahfy for the Master of Science (Primary Health Care) a student must complete 72 umts with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic compr1srng

36 units of coursework from the Graduate Diploma rn Prrmary Health Care or the Master of Prrmary Health Care rncludrng

- all Core Studies topics except the Practicum with a grade of Credit m PHCA 8007 Research rn Primary Health Care Theory and Practice and one other topic

- 18 units of Elective Studies topics rndud1ng either PHCA 8005 Survey Research Methods or PHCA Qualitative Research Methods with a grade of Credit or better

a 36 unit Thesis (PALL 9000)

Except with perm1ss1on of the Faculty Board the program must be completed w1thrn five consecutive semesters

Both the graduate certificate and the graduate diploma have three ma1or areas of study the remote context, remote health care and advanced practice

The remote context 1s concerned with the cultural soclal and economic context of remote health in Australia and proceeds to an analysis of the health care system and Its provisions for remote Australia

Remote health care proceeds from an examination of models of health epidemiology and population health to an analysts of a primary health care approach There is a particular emphasis on community development and partnerships with indigenous Australians Special prov1s1on 1s made for students to gain advanced practice skills m the

Master of Remote Health Practice (MRemoteHlthPrac)

INTRODUCTION

The Master of Remote Health Practice 1s a 54 unit coursework program which 1s offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences on a full fee paying basis The course articulates with the Graduate Certificate in Health (Remote Health Practice) and the Graduate Diploma m Remote Health Practice and the sequentially developed topics allow progression through the three awards

The program was developed 1n collaboration with the Council of Remote Area Nurses and all three courses are offered on an external basis through the Centre for Remote Health in Allee Springs Students who hold the graduate certificate or the graduate diploma are granted credit for topics already taken

COURSE AIMS

The course aims to produce graduates who will be able to

analyse their own cultural background and apply the insights gamed to a study of the context and culture of remote health in Austraha

cnt1cally examine Australian and international literature on health care and health systems in Austraha and elsewhere

recognise and analyse the key concepts underlying the development of the health care system m remote Australia

identify models of remote area practice and examine the1r underlying conceptual bases identify and apply the prrnc1ples of primary health care to remote care practice practise as culturally safe health professionals with an ongoing commitment to community development Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self determination partnership and two way learning

demonstrate generic skills and competencies for health professionals working m remote areas demonstrate specific skills and competencies for working in remote areas within their chosen profession

analyse and synthesise the major concepts and models underlying remote area health practice gain further knowledge and skills for remote area health practice through the completion of a negotiated research proiect
