Full-time only
Studies leading to the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) may be undertaken in one of two ways: either as a one year full-time course for students who have complet- ed a degree (or equivalent) referred to as Program 1; or as concurrent studies with the third and fourth years of a degree at Griffith University, referred to as Program 2.
To be eligible for Program 1, in addition to the basic qualification, students should have adequate background to undertake curriculum studies in two secondary school subjects.
To be eligible for Program 2, students must have satisfactorily completed the first two years of a Bachelor's degree, provided that their studies in the Griffith University pro- gram include sufficient units to satisfy the Graduate Diploma requirements relating to pre- and co-requisites for curriculum studies in the teaching subjects selected. Students are expected to have appropriate studies in two teaching subjects. Detailed informa- tion on the pre-requisite requirements is available from the Student Secretariat at Griffith University or the Admissions Section at Brisbane CAE.
Both programs are undertaken full-time on the Kelvin Grove campus over two semesters.
However, Program 2 students, after spending this third year of their studies at Kelvin Grove, resume their degree studies in a fourth year at Griffith University during which they continue with further concurrent Graduate Diploma studies.
The programs have common objectives and philosophies. Both aim to prepare secon- dary teachers for the future as well as for today's perceived needs. The course is based on the belief that a teacher education program should be determined by the nature of the teacher's ideas and also by the nature of the students who undertake the course.
It seeks to relate theory and practice and to be interdisciplinary in approach.
The course is structured in two phases, each phase having its own emphasis.
Phase 1 concentrates on various aspects of classroom teaching, reflects the predominant concern of student teachers with classroom practice and prepares students for prac- tice teaching, thus maximising the usefulness of that practical experience in schools.
Phase 2 reflects students' increased understanding and growing awareness of the com- plexity of teaching. There is an increasing concern with the roles of the teacher in a wider context within the school, the profession and the community.

COURSE DETAILS
special provision is made for students with specific curriculum needs, particularly those who may predictably be required to teach a discipline other than the two curriculum areas for which they are being prepared (e.g. students taking Junior Science and Mathematics may wish to study a Senior Science curriculum elective; students study- ing Junior Science and Senior Science may add a Mathematics curriculum elective).
An independent study elective is available to students who wish to adopt this mode and plan a course of study in co-operation with staff.
