Background

Refer to the NAPLAN handbook for principals and NAPLAN coordinators — 2023 — Part A, Sections 6.16 and Part B, 19.6.3, 19.6.4, 21.1, 23.1.4 and Appendix 1, Section 6.13

Where a temporary injury which impacts a student’s ability to access the tests independently has been sustained prior to the test, the school may make appropriate adjustments, such as the use of a computer to assist with the writing test, in line with section 6.10, or a NAPLAN support person to provide access to the other tests, in line with section 6.12.

Before the writing test

The QCAA will make available a template for schools to upload to the device for the student with a temporary injury to use. The template will be available on the NAPLAN portal login screen at https://naplan.qcaa.qld.edu.au/naplan/ under ‘template’, a week before the test is scheduled to commence.

Assessment platform DAC and participation status:

• No DAC applied

• Participation status: AF

For instructions on how to prepare the template for use on an iPad refer to section below.

Administering the test

Students will access the template for the writing test only.

Schools are reminded that the test is an assessment situation and all responses submitted must be the student’s own work. Use of a computer must be in accordance with standard assessment practices: spellchecker and grammar checker, dictionary, predictive text, etc. must be turned off.

Access to the internet or internal networks must also be completely restricted. It is expected that a basic level of logistical support is provided to students permitted to use assistive technology in line with normal test conditions (e.g. setting up of a computer). Word pad is the default program to open these files and it does not offer these features. (Refer to the NAPLAN handbook for

principals and NAPLAN coordinators — 2023 — Part B, Appendix 1, Section 6.9.2).

Please note the length of computer text equivalent to 3 pages of handwriting for a Year 3 student using a computer to type their writing response is 700 words. This is as determined by ACARA.

(Refer to Appendix 3 in the Years 3, 5, 7 & 9 NAPLAN test administration handbook for teachers).

For the smooth processing of the test, clearly print the following information at the top of each sheet of paper used:

• the name of the test (writing test)

• the school name and code

• the student’s full name, date of birth and year level

• the student’s EQ ID number (where applicable).

Test instructions should be delivered exactly as outlined in the Years 3, 5, 7 & 9 NAPLAN test administration handbook for teachers.

At the conclusion of the writing test session

When a student uses assistive technology (computer template), the school must:

• save the completed test to the desktop as a backup

• print the student’s clearly labelled response sheets

• insert the student’s response sheets into the student’s named testbook (they may be affixed with a paperclip, but should not be glued or stapled to the testbook)

• place the student’s named testbook with the printed response sheets in an envelope and return them with the other testbooks

• where the student does not have a named testbook, an unnamed testbook should be used, with student and school details filled in by the NAPLAN coordinator or principal.

• email an electronic copy of the student’s work to the QCAA at [email protected] by close of business on Monday 20 March 2023.

Refer to the NAPLAN handbook for principals and NAPLAN coordinators — 2023 — Part A, Section 23.1.4.

How much extra time can I allow a student?

It is recommended that no more than 5 minutes of extra time per half hour of test time be granted.

However, in certain circumstances up to an additional 15 minutes per half hour of published test time may be provided. See the NAPLAN handbook for principals and NAPLAN coordinators — 2023, Section 6.13 for specific information.

Can I photocopy the students’ responses to the tests?

No.

Refer to the NAPLAN handbook for principals and NAPLAN coordinators — 2023, Code of Conduct: Sections 2.5.7 and Appendix 1 — 8.11 — Schools must not copy, transcribe or transmit student responses, or cause responses to be recorded except as outlined by these protocols.

There is no need to copy the tests as images of the writing test will be available for download and all answers to other tests will be provided on the student report. Photocopying is by far the most common reason for lost testbooks.

How to prepare the template for use on an iPad

The school must use a secure process for copying the provided template to the MS Word app on the iPad the student will use for the test. The school should check that the template can be opened in the MS Word app on the iPad. The iPad with the template on it must not be provided to the student until the writing test session.

Schools must also ensure that the following settings are applied on the iPad for the duration of the test session:

1. Turn off Assistive Touch (iOS latest version) and disable Voice Control:

i. From the home screen, select Settings.

ii. Select General.
