Edition 13 NOVEMBER 2014 COACHING TIPS – LINE

Bowls is a simple game, you only have to get your line and length correct!!! This item addresses the major element, line, for without the correct line, you will not achieve the desired result. It will matter very little about what weight you deliver.

Here are two tips to help and they are based upon the fact that every one of your bowls, if delivered with the same grip and same action, will take the same line.

Stand behind the mat, take the correct grip for the hand that you have chosen, then select your line. You might like to select your line by taking a reference point on the bank, or at the turning point of your bowl, or a spot on the green on the line that you have chosen. Whichever method you choose, be

committed. Visualise your line, taking your eyes along the line to the jack, and back to the mat and then back up the line again, and back to the mat. Do not deliver your bowl until you can properly “see” the line of your bowl, so you might have to repeat the visualisation process several times. There is no need to hurry as this is one time that you are in total control of the game! But when you can see the line and “feel” the weight, be committed, deliver the bowl along your aiming line, never taking your eyes off the chosen spot, be it the reference point on the green or the bank, or the turning point.

Now to practising getting the line by “hitting the spot”. This is a great drill for ensuring that you get your line, every time. You practice by rolling your bowl over a spot on the green. Simply get something that you can place on the green say a plastic golf ball marker that will not disturb the line of the bowl when the bowl runs over it. Place the marker approx. 4-5 metres in front of the mat, along the line that you have chosen. The end result of the bowl, the weight etc., doesn’t matter. You do not even need to use a jack in this drill.

What matters is that in this practice routine, you deliver the bowl over the same spot, time and time again. You can do a variation of this drill in your own home. Place a cushion or something that will take the impact of your bowl delivered from about 2-3 metres.

Then deliver into the cushion, aiming for a specific spot on the cushion. When you can hit the spot consistently, say about 95% of the time, you can be confident that you can “get your line”. You only then have to worry about length. If you need any help with that, see your coach.

OPEN DAYS – OCTOBER 2014

With flags fluttering in the breeze and a good number of coaches and members to assist on our Open Days and Sunday mornings, the results have been very encouraging – and worthy of mention are the members who have “recruited “and followed the progress of our future members.

A number of interested persons have attended up to 4 Sunday mornings do date and eight adults and one junior have become members of our Club. Others have indicated a strong commitment to join in the near future.

On Sunday 26th October, the synthetic green

“overflowed” with new bowlers waiting for a space to become available to practice and receive coaching.

The coaches were kept very busy and a big thanks to other members who assist each Sunday morning. A word on our junior member – he is all of 11 years of age and gives his Grandfather a very serious challenge – after the first coaching morning, Lauchlan was heard to say “Granddad, if I played pennant now, what team would I be in?” Needless to say, Granddad Tom was a little taken aback but gently replied “probably in the seventh”!

We need some more Granddads and Grandmas (as Margaret also attends for the entire coaching period) to bring their families to the Club and encourage them to take up bowling and join our Club – the Club’s future is in your hands…

BOWLS LOCKERS

What a great addition to the Club – two lockers, under cover, to store bowls used for coaching and another for barefoot bowls.

After one use the lockers have saved considerable carting of bowls boxes and it now is extremely convenient to select the appropriate box of bowls for each person. Thanks to those responsible for purchasing and installing the lockers.

BAREFOOT BOWLS

Bookings are slow at this time but as Christmas draws closer and parties are in everyone’s thoughts, I feel confident that I will be calling for lots of volunteers!!

Our first four bookings this summer have been from Beaconhills College – 3 sessions where Year 11 students attend as part of their Health curriculum and there is serious competition during these times and Chisholm Institute – where Phys. Ed adult students attend as part of their training.

I would really appreciate members volunteering their time - preferably by calling and letting me (Kay Crook on 5944 3708) know when they could help – much nicer than having to request help each week.

CHICKEN RUN – SUNDAY 26th OCTOBER Helen and Peter Adair are to be congratulated for their tireless efforts in conducting the recent “Chicken Run”- 2 greens were needed to cope with the crowd and it was not only a great event but a lovely afternoon/twilight as well.

After the “game” members relaxed in the Club house awaiting their meal and what a treat we were given – curried chicken on rice with salads or “Elvis” meatloaf and vegetables – see Peter for more info on the recipes! Visitors came from Boronia, Ferntree Gully and Narre Warren – and I feel certain they will be back for the next Adair’s special event. “Well done” to Helen, Peter and their helpers in the kitchen.

SOCIAL CLUB COMMITTEE REPORT

First of all, we would like to thank the members for supporting “Happy Hour”, it is great that the members can get together and enjoy a drink and meals

together. The Fish & Chip night (on Thursday 2nd October) was a success but we still get members who put their names down and don’t turn up. We had 87 names on the list, only 74 turned up. We would like to thank John and Mary for their help in the kitchen, also for our normal Thursday nights. Our chefs at the BBQ, Geoff, Ron, Dennis and Kevin, also Greg for the fundraising sales and Tony for his effort, and the girls in the kitchen, well done. Now we can use our patio outside, it can only get better and better.

The Committee and I are organising a Monster Christmas Stocking which will be drawn at our Christmas Dinner Dance on Friday 12TH December.

See details on Notice Board, and put your names on the list. List will close on Saturday 6th December.

We are asking Club members to donate any item suitable for our stocking. Place in tubs on stage, see board on stage, and also if members would like to donate to the purchase of turkey, ham etc. for our stocking. Hope you all oblige to make our Christmas

fundraiser a success.

Dates for ticket sales and fundraiser tickets are on board.

Thanking everyone, Margaret Glasenbury CHAMPIONSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT

This seasons events are now well under way with the Women’s Handicap event won by Doris Christoffersen (S) Kay Crook and Pat Ellis from Betty Brown (S), Jan Pearson and Alaine Dawson. Congratulations ladies.

The Women’s Minor Singles Championship has reached the final with Val Fowler and Christine Gage the finalists. It was extremely disappointing that this event attracted very few entries and unless it is better supported in future, this event may disappear from our calendar.

The Women’s Singles commenced on 30th October, with the Women’s Pairs commencing on 20th November.

The Men’s’ Championship is down to the last eight and in the early rounds there were some exciting finishes with margins of one or two shots in several games. Carsten Jensen prevailed by one shot over Peter Artaud, new bowler David Corrigan losing by two shots to Keith Lewis, Eddie Wilson prevailing by one shot from Brian Gay, Tony French coming from 14-21 down to win by one from Pat Steere, Michael Adams losing to John Horwood by three, Bob Gladman by one shot from Roy Down and Andrew Bunnell down 22-25 to Peter Hodgson.

These results suggest there may be further close contests with the Championship Finals to be held on Sunday 14th December, so make every effort to come along and support the finalists.

Just a small grizzle. If entering singles events the players are responsible for obtaining markers and first round losers are then required to mark in the

following round. Two players did not arrange for markers and one loser failed to mark in the following round which is poor form. If you don’t want to or can’t mark as a loser, don’t enter.

Form B for the balance of Club events will be available from the second week in November and I would urge newer members in particular to enter the Women’s and Men’s Handicap Pairs which offers the opportunity of playing with a more senior bowler and gaining valuable experience.

On a Regional level, congratulations to Alan Thompson who contested the final going down narrowly in a high standard game to a bowler from Heatherdale. Congratulations Alan.

Jean Fothergill – Chairperson.

WELFARE REPORT

Being a large Club has its positives, but it also means that our members need TLC from time to time. In the last two months, we have acknowledged on your behalf, nearly a dozen members to wish them well in their various recovery or sadness due to a

bereavement.

Just a note of caution to our male mates, please think twice about climbing a ladder or onto a roof!

We hope to see Cliff, Joyce, John, Norm, David, Wendy, Trevor, Don, Lynn, Avril, Marion and Kevin on the dance floor in December.

Happy Birthday to our Members who are lucky

enough to celebrate their birthday around Christmas.

Cheers, Tony, Marg and Jean – Welfare Team
