However, it is not through the material achievement that this cohort has shone, but through the people that we have become. We are much more than a cohort. We are a family. In times of need, we have banded together. In our creativity we have been groundbreaking. In the face of adversity, we have been fearless. It is without a doubt that the people within these pages are not only some of the most brilliant minds moving into the film world, but also among the best people to do so. It has been an honour to work with you all, just don’t forget to mention us when you win your Oscars.

And above all, remember that life is fragile, but you don’t have to live it that way.

Lachlan Cunneen, Project Coordinator Raw talent, durability, adaptability, steadfast, ground-breaking, family. These are all

words that came to mind when tasked to write this foreword. The creative industries are undergoing one of the largest transitions in recent memory, in the face of which the 2021 Film, Screen, and New Media cohort has shown nothing but sheer professionalism and dignity.

As adventurers exploring the depths of Australian society through the medium of documentary, from mapping the human experience through narrative, to showcasing the work of other brilliant minds in trailer and music videos; we’ve done it all. Over 40 successful outcomes have come out of this year’s SCP, an unprecedented achievement.

Shot entirely in a studio and using constructed sets, it takes a theatrical approach to documentary filmmaking.

Kat Ricketts has been a medieval re-enactor for seven years, involved predominantly in

demonstrations involving siege weapons such as trebuchets and catapults.

She recounts her introduction to the world of medieval re-enactment and her experiences achieving recognition in what is a traditionally male dominated world. As one of the few females involved specifically in the world of siege weaponry Kat is uniquely positioned to discuss the reactions she receives both from other re-enactors and the general public in

response to her specialty. The documentary also focuses on the importance and benefits of the community Kat has found.

Recently, I have found myself reflecting on how I was going into the SCP Animation Studio compared to where I am now at the end. At the start of the year, I knew these units would be pretty tough but I don’t think any of us fully comprehended the effort and dedication we would end up putting into our films. Nine months ago, these films were just vague ideas and a few sketches assembled into a last minute pitch for our first assignment. Since then, we have spent hundreds of hours toiling away at concept art, modelling, textures, animation and rendering, going back over the same things dozens of times to ensure it’s just right. Now, I think I speak on behalf of everyone when I say they have found a special place in our hearts and will leave a lasting impression in our memories. From the start, we jokingly began referring to the characters as “babee”; a way to express that we liked them. Now, the characters and the films have all really become our “babees” and we love what we have created.

Personally, I will miss the unique environment that SCP Animation created. This was perhaps the only time in our budding careers that we had the opportunity to have complete creative

freedom to make whatever we wanted, the resources and support to do it and the colleagues to work on it. Even though Tuesday’s classes were often challenging, I will miss the fun atmosphere and everyone’s inspiring creative drive that those days created. Our friends helped us through hard times, sleepless nights, tight deadlines, and the continuing challenges of the pandemic. It was tough, but we got there in the end together.

I’d like to express our shared gratitude to our tutors. Without their guidance, knowledge and patience, these films and their makers would not be where they are. Thank you Sorin, Staché and Paul for the support, leadership and time you gave to this year’s SCP Animation cohort. I’d also like to give a special thanks to Christian for showing us the ropes at the start and leaving this year’s directors big shoes to fill.

This years slate includes four short animated films that demonstrate a range of genres and

animation styles including stop motion and motion capture. We are so proud of the films we have put together despite all the odds. We are all looking forward to a long rest now that we finally made it.
