2021
However, it is not through the material achievement that this cohort has shone, but through the people that we have become. We are much more than a cohort. We are a family. In times of need, we have banded together. In our creativity we have been groundbreaking. In the face of adversity, we have been fearless. It is without a doubt that the people within these pages are not only some of the most brilliant minds moving into the film world, but also among the best people to do so. It has been an honour to work with you all, just don’t forget to mention us when you win your Oscars.
And above all, remember that life is fragile, but you don’t have to live it that way.
Lachlan Cunneen, Project Coordinator Raw talent, durability, adaptability, steadfast, ground-breaking, family. These are all
words that came to mind when tasked to write this foreword. The creative industries are undergoing one of the largest transitions in recent memory, in the face of which the 2021 Film, Screen, and New Media cohort has shown nothing but sheer professionalism and dignity.
As adventurers exploring the depths of Australian society through the medium of documentary, from mapping the human experience through narrative, to showcasing the work of other brilliant minds in trailer and music videos; we’ve done it all. Over 40 successful outcomes have come out of this year’s SCP, an unprecedented achievement.

The first semester of 2021 saw the film students following the stories and experiences of various members of the community in a non-fictional approach. Throughout the semester we not only advanced our skills but told the stories of local, national, and international subjects.

Queensland, has held a hope of becoming a generational family business, but tensions arise when Ania and Phil’s daughters work harder on their own separate futures and dreams. Will the passionate owners of the

Brotherboy is a short documentary that follows the story of Taz Clay, an Aboriginal transgender man, or Brotherboy, who was kicked out of his foster home due to his queerness as a teen, and began a life advocating for other at risk youth. This documentary highlights many of Taz’s struggles with coming to terms with his identity as a Brotherboy, how he learned to love himself and his community, and where he is now in life.
Bustard Head retells the tragic story of Nils Gibson and his family during their time stationed at Australia’s most gruesome lighthouse. Shining a light on the harsh realities of life at the light-station in the 1800s, this documentary delves into the devastating effects of the extreme isolation on the mental and physical health of its inhabitants. Shot entirely in a studio and using constructed sets, it takes a theatrical approach to documentary filmmaking.
BUSTARD HEAD
What if there was a person whose job it was to ensure that our bucket list items were met before we took our last breaths of life? Michelle Barnes is an end-of-life doula and registered nurse, practicing in Brisbane, Queensland. In this short-form documentary and through her own
heart- wrenching experiences with losing her mother, we are invited into Michelle’s unique world and how death and dying can be a beautiful celebration of the life that was lived.

Fitting the Brief is a documentary that aims to shine a light on the realities of being a dancer in the modern dance industry landscape, and analyses what truly lies behind the curtain. The film highlights that every body deserves to dance, and has one mission: make a change.

Kat Ricketts has been a medieval re-enactor for seven years, involved predominantly in
demonstrations involving siege weapons such as trebuchets and catapults.
She recounts her introduction to the world of medieval re-enactment and her experiences achieving recognition in what is a traditionally male dominated world. As one of the few females involved specifically in the world of siege weaponry Kat is uniquely positioned to discuss the reactions she receives both from other re-enactors and the general public in
response to her specialty. The documentary also focuses on the importance and benefits of the community Kat has found.
The traditional Chinese game, Mahjong, has spread across the globe. As players have moved around the world, new communities and cultures have taken to the game and introduced their own traditions. In 4 Walls, we look at the communities that have formed in Australia, Singapore and China. We find out how the game is played and the relationships that are formed as the traditions of Mahjong are passed from player to player, culture to culture.

pitching, writing scripts, filming, and spending weeks in the editing
labs, we have been through it all and are very proud to present our
work to family and friends alike.

Lola Lane is a 1940s all-rounder star, trapped in the reel of her last film where she met her untimely demise.
Back in the 21st Century, Moe’s obsession with beautiful women draws him to find a way to bring Lola into the real world, even if this ploy means offering up one of his cinema workers as an unwilling vessel. Cody must figure out a way to stop this plot before she finds herself sharing her body with an unsolicited houseguest.

Recently, I have found myself reflecting on how I was going into the SCP Animation Studio compared to where I am now at the end. At the start of the year, I knew these units would be pretty tough but I don’t think any of us fully comprehended the effort and dedication we would end up putting into our films. Nine months ago, these films were just vague ideas and a few sketches assembled into a last minute pitch for our first assignment. Since then, we have spent hundreds of hours toiling away at concept art, modelling, textures, animation and rendering, going back over the same things dozens of times to ensure it’s just right. Now, I think I speak on behalf of everyone when I say they have found a special place in our hearts and will leave a lasting impression in our memories. From the start, we jokingly began referring to the characters as “babee”; a way to express that we liked them. Now, the characters and the films have all really become our “babees” and we love what we have created.
Personally, I will miss the unique environment that SCP Animation created. This was perhaps the only time in our budding careers that we had the opportunity to have complete creative
freedom to make whatever we wanted, the resources and support to do it and the colleagues to work on it. Even though Tuesday’s classes were often challenging, I will miss the fun atmosphere and everyone’s inspiring creative drive that those days created. Our friends helped us through hard times, sleepless nights, tight deadlines, and the continuing challenges of the pandemic. It was tough, but we got there in the end together.
I’d like to express our shared gratitude to our tutors. Without their guidance, knowledge and patience, these films and their makers would not be where they are. Thank you Sorin, Staché and Paul for the support, leadership and time you gave to this year’s SCP Animation cohort. I’d also like to give a special thanks to Christian for showing us the ropes at the start and leaving this year’s directors big shoes to fill.
This years slate includes four short animated films that demonstrate a range of genres and
animation styles including stop motion and motion capture. We are so proud of the films we have put together despite all the odds. We are all looking forward to a long rest now that we finally made it.

CRUNKO Drop in the Night
Moonboy Nobody’s Home

to rendering, the past nine months have kept advancing both
the students’ personal and industry skills. The following projects
are a display of pure dedication to their craft and love for visual
storytelling.
A pair of news anchors covers the sudden appearance of a group, CRUNKO, and its various characters. As CRUNKO propagates itself throughout the globe, rampant advertising of its merchandise results in an unnatural rise of popularity. All everybody can talk about is CRUNKO. We will all do anything for CRUNKO.
CRUNKO

This leads him attempting to leap from a big crater on the moon’s surface, but he soon finds that the moon’s gravity is weighing him down causing him to fall into the crater and crack. This injury makes him hesitant to even attempt to try and fly again but he still longs to be among the stars with the comets. Will he be able to overcome his fear of falling before the comets leave or will Moonboy be trapped alone on the moon forever?
