Essentially
WELCOME TO ESSENTIALLY DANCE 2015
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Essentially Dance 2015!
It’s that time of the year again where our Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance Performance) students have the opportunity to get a sense of what a career in the performing arts is all about – performing in a professional environment and being able to connect directly with public audiences. Not only do they have the wonderful opportunity to learn and perform repertoire from a diverse range of professional choreographers, they work alongside production and design teams from across the performing arts industry.
Alongside stagecraft skills, production elements, and working cohesively as a collective dance ‘company’ putting on a full performance season, these shows provide another step in their transition towards professional careers. Each year group has been presented with the challenge of adapting to a different dance genre, experiencing varied approaches to choreography, and learning the nuances of creative practice through the difference between new works vs. the restaging of existing ones – all important skills to be successful in the real-world.
We are very grateful for the support and assistance of various disciplines and departments across QUT that assist in putting on this show, including Drama – Technical Production, QUT Precincts and the School of MECA, and a big thank you to all the choreographers, designers, and the QUT Dance Team without whom this performance season could not be mounted.
Finally, we are grateful to you the audience, for your support and encouragement of our students through your patronage of this performance event. The students have again risen to the challenges presented to them and we are very proud of their progress.
We are glad that you too get to share in the reason they are at QUT – because they love to dance!

En Rui Foo, Aiden Birney-Kilner or Claire Bathgate- Peterson
This solo is part of EDC’s Signature work, The Red Shoes, which premiered in July, 2014 at the Playhouse, QPAC. Inspired by the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale and the 1940’s movie, The Weeping Angel is a physical exploration of the presence of the white angel who brings redemption and forgiveness to the heroine. This solo was developed in collaboration with EDC dancer, Benjamin Chapman.
A SHORT HISTORY OF LIFE
Choreography MATTHEW LAWRENCE Costume Designer BIANCA BULLEY
Music A Short History of Life, JASMINE LEUNG, played live by Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra
Cast 2nd Year BFA Dance Performance
Aptly, perhaps - considering Albert Einstein’s observations on the relativity of time and space - I cover the history of life, within three short musical movements. The original composition, from Jasmin Leung, traces our evolution between Einstein’s Big Bang, to 2003’s latest cosmological hypothesis on the final destination of the universe: the Big Rip. In-between the ‘Bangs’, there lays our primeval origins. Covering organic genesis - developing from single to complex cell structures – evolving to animals, communities, and our hectic present. And what of the future? I predict a sprint to the finish.
A special thanks to Queensland Ballet’s Principal Conductor, Andrew Mogrelia, for providing the project’s impetus. To Jasmin Leung’s inspiring framework, and Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Matthew Schwarz, for colouring the dots.

Music There will be blood, JONNY GREENWOOD Cast 1st Year BFA Dance Performance
Living in a society of conformity, personal thought, behaviour and action are no longer considered valuable. If we allowed conscious thought and feeling to dictate our path…if we were singled out….where do we now exist? Thank you to the first year students for your enthusiasm, commitment & unwavering hard work during the making of Red Letter Lost.. It was a great pleasure working with you all.

THE GIRAFFE IS ON FIRE
Choreography ZAIMON VILMANIS in collaboration with the 3rd years Music The Equestrian Vortex, Collatina, Mark of Damnation,
A Goblin, BROADCAST; Star Dream Girl, DAVID LYNCH; Eraserhead Side A and B, DAVID LYNCH
& ALAN R. SPLET; Made of Metal, GOUPER; Bell Housing, Red Wind, Antimatter.
Cast 3rd Year BFA Dance Performance Let’s walk up and up and up into the clouds, stepping stones to life.
I want to keep going and going until I am far away.
Clouds have no limits, swish blissfully from side to side.
The giraffe is on fire burning, not by the magic but by losing its soul.
I feel blue, blue like the sky that’s falling.
The world has turned blue.
But why blue?
Blue with envy, blue with beauty, blue with bold anger.
Blue is blue.
- Bonnie Ross
This prose was written in response to Salvador Dali’s painting “The Giraffe is Burning”
(1937). The painting depicts Dali’s own struggles with what direction his country, which was in turmoil at the time, would take. Like Dali, in creating this work, we explored the depths of our subconscious through creative tasks, improvisation, written streaming and dream sharing to bring forward our surreal responses to the problems that we encounter on our own doorstep. “The Giraffe is on Fire” in our own moving painting.
Special thanks goes to the 3rd years for their honesty, openness and trust and Liz Vilmanis for her provocation and strengthening of the vision.
