The social studies course provides professional training for social workers and employees in the personnel area. A combined course for the diploma program in social studies and a passed art program normally extends over four years. The combined course for the Diploma in Social Studies and an Honors Arts degree spans five years.

From 1971 it is planned that the Diploma in Social Studies may only be taken in combination with a degree course, or by university graduates. Candidates must meet university entrance requirements, but no special matriculation subjects are prescribed as prerequisites for the Diploma in Social Studies.

G. Wales Scholarship

All candidates for the Annual Examination must have registered for lectures or for external study at the beginning of the year and must submit an examination entry to the Registrar no later than Thursday, 23 July. A timetable of the Annual Examination will be available at the Registrar's Office a few weeks before the commencement of the examination. Special consideration and Special Examinations may be given to a student who:. a) has been affected by illness or other serious cause in his studies during the year and makes a written application for special consideration, together with a medical certificate, to the Registrar before the start of the examination period.

Field and other practical work shall be conducted in each of the years as the Board shall direct in the subject details. The Board may exempt any candidate from any of the subjects of the course by virtue of other subjects of equivalent scope and standard passed in university examinations. The board may prescribe the conditions under which any candidate may combine the diploma course with another degree or diploma course.

Except with the approval of the board, no candidate taking the course for the degree in Social Studies may register for a subject or subjects in any other course. An exhibition of $30 may be awarded for the year's work in each of the subjects Social Work Part I, Social Work Part II, and Social Work Part III. No such exhibition shall be given to any candidate who at the annual examination does not pass in all the subjects for the first time, fails in all the subjects prescribed for the Year and.

Except with the approval of the board, no such exhibition shall be given except to a candidate standing in the first class of the subject. With the approval of the board, candidates may be admitted to the examination in any subject for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honors or the degree of Bachelor of Commerce and may be placed under the conditions laid down in the regulations relating to the respective degree on the class list and compete for exhibition in to. Provided that he shall not be awarded the degree until he has, after completing the prescribed field work for the Second and Third Years of the course, completed to the satisfaction of the Board such additional field work, if any, as may to be considered necessary. by the head of the Department of Social Studies.

If a candidate is taking a course while working, the committee prescribes the order in which subjects are taken and may limit the number of subjects in any year.

COMBINED COURSE FOR BACHELOR OF ARTS (HONOURS), DIPLOMA IN SOCIAL STUDIES Combined courses for the honors degree in the Schools of German, History, Philosophy and Psychology and the Diploma in Social Studies have been approved. Year 3 Social Work part II Social History Social Organization B Political Philosophy (Pass) or Modern Philosophy (Pass). During the third quarter of this year, the student must consult with the professor of history and the director of social studies about the subject for his thesis that he will submit during the fifth year.

The Diploma course in Social Studies has been under review during 1969 and students planning to start the course in combination with the Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1970 or later years are advised to consult the Associate Dean or Secretary of the Faculty of Commerce, or the Secretary, Board of Social Studies for further information. The following combined courses in Commerce and Social Studies have been approved for students who began their studies before 1970. 3rd Year 4th Year Social Work Part II Psychology Part IIA Statistical Method of Business Administration ( Unit 1: Organizational Behavior Personnel Practice .and Unit 2: Business Planning and Control).

212. PERSONNEL PRACTICE

A course of one lecture per week and one practice session every two weeks throughout the year. 207. SOCIAL BIOLOGY

The course consists of five units of which three on Psychopathology are compulsory, and two must be chosen from the options. 50 hours of lectures plus 75 hours divided between lectures and practical work according to selected units. Lectures, discussions, clinical demonstrations, and experimental studies concerning the characteristics and determinants of conduct disorders.

An examination of the continuous interaction between man and his general living and non-living environment. The extent of man's power to manipulate his environment is assessed and the consequences of disrupting the delicate balance that has evolved over millions of years are studied. Principles of epidemiology and the outcome for both the individual and the population of modern methods of disease prevention and treatment.

The written examination will consist of two papers: (i) a one-hour paper to be held early in the Third Term, (ü) a three-hour paper to be held at the Annual Examinations in November.

SYLLABUS

A course of 4 lectures and one tutorial per week throughout the year and fieldwork as directed in Section D. Spock, B., Infant and Child Care. Not intended as a course in psychopathology, but rather to provide a dynamic overview of the field of mental health and mental illness. Each student is required to conduct fieldwork with a social agency or department faculty for a continuous six-week period before the first semester begins and for two days a week during the first semester.

Exact dates are available from the Department of Social Studies, but students are advised that the first practice starts around January 16. Fieldwork dates will be changed for students entering Social Work II as graduates.

SOCIAL WORK PART III Section I (Philosophy and Method of Social Work). ii) Social work in the correctional field. The emphasis is on the service to the individual offender, with the group phenomena encountered in this area being discussed. The current level of knowledge of crime and delinquency in relation to prevention and control. iii) Illness and Social Work Practices.

Each student is expected to work in the field three whole days a week during the first term and two days a week in the second term, and for three consecutive months after the final examination or an equivalent period. The student may be expected to take the majority of his training in any of the above social work settings, although he may gain experience in more than one such setting during the year. Tuition fees for the whole year or for the first term are paid at the time of enrollment (which is in January). Tuition fees for the third term are paid one week before the end of the second term.
