At this time an important change took place in the organization of the Education Department. This, together with an annual lecture - the John Smyth Memorial Lecture - serves to keep the memory of a great educational green. The motto of the College is "non omnis moriar" and forms the theme of the College anthem sung by Mr.

For entry to all first-year courses, the academic qualification required is the School Leaving Certificate from the University of Melbourne, or an approved equivalent. Most of the first year's work is aimed at continuing the student's general education, further developing his current skills and knowledge and arousing new interests. To acquaint the student with craft requirements of the elementary school and enable him to initiate and carry out a satisfactory craft program.

To instill in the student the importance of allowing the development of the child's natural creative ability and ingenuity while encouraging cooperation and group activity when desired. Students are encouraged to study the history and development of the chosen craft, as well as to do practical work. In the woodworking course, the student becomes familiar with wood as a medium and with the more commonly used tools and processes of the woodworker's craft.

The development of the novel, drama and poetry through the study of works by representative writers. Exercises and exercises designed to increase student effectiveness in written and spoken English, clear thinking and clear expression in speech and writing. At the beginning of the primary course, four lectures are given, covering:. i) University libraries to help students with their studies and professional studies and for recreation. il) Advantages of orderly arrangement of books—. Dewey classification system. In addition to general principles, it covers methods of teaching arithmetic at individual levels in primary school, studying children's mistakes, diagnosing problems and corrective techniques.

A course tailored to individual needs may cover one or more of the following areas: theory, history of mathematics, algebra, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, differential and integral calculus, basic statistics, and mechanics. A course of lectures on the method of teaching science and elementary science in elementary school. The major part of the course refers to the consideration of the following topics in connection with the subject of study:

Mineral kingdom - common rocks and minerals. i) School site and school garden. j) Special studies on animals - insects, spiders, birds, mammals. k) Special plant studies - moss, fern, flowering plants. A course of lectures and practical work designed to give a basic outline of the structure and function of animals and plants, leading to a study of several special fields such as ecology, heredity and human biology. The aim of the first year of the course is to foster a love and appreciation of music and to provide the necessary background for its successful teaching.

The second year advances the student's aesthetic and cultural background and provides a foundation in the basic principles of school music education. Various visiting music teachers together with the College staff provide instruction in the following: appreciation; various choral groups—madrigals, Gilbert and Sullivan, general choir and special choir for broadcast purposes; recorders; and orchestra. Discuss current social structure to enable a clearer understanding of the factors involved in interaction within the community.

Freedom and human rights. a) Knowledge of the term "social studies" and the basic principles and goals on which the planning of the course is based. Students will have every opportunity to explore various aspects of the subject that may particularly appeal to them.

General survey (as group activity) of a particular area

Expanding the work done in the previous year related to the curriculum of the lower classes. These topics are treated from the point of view of the most effective teaching techniques, different methods of approach and general problems encountered at work. Art past and present (this culminates in Fine Art at University in the third year). Design in everyday things, together with an understanding of the principles, tools and materials used.

Become aware of the stages of art development in children with special emphasis on the stages reached in high school. Sufficient knowledge of the processes included in the course of study for upper secondary schools. An appreciation of the general educational objectives of needlework and the establishment of standards for design and technique.

Modern developments in educational theory and practice are discussed, with an emphasis on factors that are important in the education of the young person. History of Education of Handicapped Children; personalities and their contributions; the origin of better treatment. The purpose of the course is to provide trained staff for teaching arts and crafts in Consolidated and Group Schools and Craft Centers in primary schools.

Blackboard Sketching is treated from the point of view of the blackboard as a different medium and as a learning tool in the appropriate special subjects. Upon re-employment, the student must enter the absence in the Absence Register at the General Office. All students pay a sports contribution that is checked by the financial committee of the Student Participation Council.

The agreement stipulates that the student, upon completion of the course, will remain in the service of the Educational Directorate for a period of no less than three years.

LOYOLA SOCIETY

The aim of the Department of Education is to provide accommodation in hostels for those students who have to live away from home during their studies. Housekeeping in the hostel is in the hands of the warden, while matters of tone and discipline in the hostel are the responsibility of the resident teacher. Unless there is a very good reason, students who enter the hostel are expected to stay there for a year or at least one semester to give notice of their intention to leave - accompanied by a statement from their parents that the change is being made with their knowledge and consent .

Facilities are available so that students can wash their personal clothes - sheets and towels are washed at the hostel's expense.

R.C. CONSTITUTION SECTION 1

A motion of no confidence in the Council may be proposed if a petition, signed by one third of the financial members of the College, requests a general meeting of the student body. No matter so vetoed can be raised again for one month. f) There will be an annual meeting of the entire College in the last full month of the College year, at which the Council will present its annual report and audited balance sheet and at which the new office bearers will be elected. g). Standing orders will be reviewed by the Executive at the beginning of each year.

The President may call special meetings of the Council when necessary, or upon receipt of a petition from one-third of the student members of the Council. All meetings shall be open to the general body of students who may attend but not vote. A member who is absent without leave from the executive meetings of the Council, including the Standing Committees, where applicable, shall thereby vacate his or her seat.

Any vacancy shall be filled by election of the relevant group within two weeks. If the president is a man, the vice president is a woman; and vice versa. In addition, in the last full month of the academic year, the student body elects the following office bearers:. ii) General Secretary for Sports (Women). e) ELECTIONS referred to in Article 2a, 2c and 2d are secret. f) One staff representative shall be elected at the beginning of each year at the meeting of the staff concerned for a period of two years, so that at any given time there shall be one male and one female representative on the council. g) Representatives of recognized groups will be elected within one month after the start of the academic year. h).

At the first full meeting of the Council, it will elect from among its members an Assistant Secretary and an Assistant Treasurer. A Social Committee consisting of a Social Secretary and a man and a woman with the Social Secretary as Chairman is appointed by the Council. The method of dividing students into competitive groups will be decided annually by the S.R.C. Clubs and societies established under the following requirements may be funded by the S.R.C. a).

The officers of the clubs and associations, who are elected no later than one calendar month after the start of the College year, are: Equipment must be checked at the end of each year or at the completion of the relevant season and an inventory submitted to the general sports secretary, of the items and condition of the equipment. e) Each Club or Society will elect an interim secretary, who will be responsible for:.
