Advice from IBSA re ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology
Purpose
To tell schools about changes to the ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology qualification due to revisions in the ICA05 Information and Communications Technology Training Package.
Background
In March 2009, ICA05 Information and Communications Technology Training Package version 3 was endorsed. In this version, the packaging rules have been altered for ICA20105 Certificate II in
Information Technology. In late 2009, the QSA received advice that the NTIS website has some errors in the coding of some units of competency in the ICA05 Training Package. Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) is aware of these errors. Changes to the units that affect most schools are minor.
Information
The Information Technology Systems Senior Syllabus 2006 (amended November 2008) will be updated on the QSA website. Schools do not have to amend current work programs.
The Information and Communications Technology SAS (2004) will also be updated on the QSA website.
The QSA plans to run workshops in Semester 1, 2010 covering these changes.
In ICA05 Information and Communications Technology Training Package version 3:
1. ICAU1128B Operate a personal computer has been removed from the list of mandatory elective units. Therefore in Information Technology Systems (ITS), one of the following units must be selected to replace it as part of the ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology qualification:
▪ ICAT3025B Run standard diagnostic tests
▪ ICAS3121B Administer network peripherals
▪ ICAI3021B Connect internal hardware components
▪ ICAS3115B Maintain equipment and software in working order
The QSA will automatically add these units to schools’ existing scope of registration for ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology linked to the ITS from the beginning of 2010.
2. In ITS, the following embedded units, Implement system software changes and Manage customer relationships, have altered codes. These are the correct unit codes:
▪ ICAI3110C Implement system software changes
▪ ICTCC330A Manage customer relationships
There have been other changes to units of competency regarding some prerequisites (see attachment).
Schools should ensure that they review their current scope of registration and the transition guidelines regarding the ICA05 Training Package version 3.
Attachments and web links
The revised structure for ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology linked to the ITS syllabus is attached.
Information about the ICA05 Information and Communications Technology Training Package, including VET qualifications, units of competency and assessment guidelines, can be obtained from the National Training Information Services website <www.ntis.gov.au>.
What you need to do
Schools currently registered to deliver ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology:
• QSA will automatically give schools the mandatory four elective units linked to the ITS syllabus. This will appear on the schools’ scope of registration from the beginning of 2010. Schools will need to select one of these four units and adjust Training and Assessment Strategies for ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology linked to ITS. These changes will affect Year 11 students enrolled in ITS in 2010.
• QSA will automatically give schools the new version of the existing units of competency linked to the ITS syllabus ONLY. This will appear on the schools’ scope of registration from the beginning of 2010. Schools will need to download the latest version of the units of competency from the NTIS website <www.ntis.gov.au>.
• Existing Year 12 students (enrolled in ITS or stand-alone delivery) may continue to deliver and assess the ICA05 Training Package version 2 of ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology qualification and units of competency.
2010
• Ensure all new students are enrolled in the latest version of units of competency (i.e. either A, B or C versions) from the ICA05 Training Package version 3.
Schools do not have to amend current work programs for Information Technology Systems Senior Syllabus 2006 (amended November 2008).
Principals:
• Tell the VET coordinator about the changes to the ICA05 Training Package.
• Tell staff involved in teaching and assessing ICA20105 about the changes to the training package.
• Tell staff involved in entering student enrolments and completion data into SDCS about the changes to the training package.
• Download the revised ICA05 units of competency from the NTIS website – www.ntis.gov.au
• Ensure that staff revise all documents to reflect the latest version of units of competency and qualification packaging rules.
Do not enroll any new students in Version 2 of the ICA05 Information and Communications Technology Training Package in 2010.

Information for the Information Technology Systems Senior Syllabus (2008)
Schools wishing to offer Information Technology Systems must be registered for the following certificate:
• ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology from the ICA05 training package.
Relevant registration information is on the QSA website <www.qsa.qld.edu.au> under Years 10-12 > VET > AQTF resource kit. Information on ICA05 Information and Communications
Technology training package and access to the units of competency is on the National Training Information Services (NTIS) website www.ntis.gov.au.
In completing this course of study, students will have the opportunity to achieve a Certificate II qualification. Students who do not complete a certificate but achieve one or more units of competency will receive a Statement of Attainment.
ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology
The ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology is based on units of competency selected from the ICA05 Information and Communications Technology Training Package version 3. This qualification provides the foundation of knowledge and skills required to work in the Information Technology industry. It also provides foundation employment and general computing skills that enable participation in the Information Technology
environment.
To achieve the qualification, students must achieve competencies in:
• the prerequisite unit of competency;
• all 10 required units of competency; and
• minimum of 4 (maximum of 5) elective units of competency, including at least one of the mandatory elective units as described in Table 1, next page.
